Lyrics
The summer sun is fading as the year grows old
And darker days are drawing near
The winter winds will be much colder
Now you're not here.
I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky
And one by one they disappear.
I wish that I was flying with them
Now you're not here
Like a song through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away
Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way
You always loved this time of year.
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
Cause you're not here
Like a song through the trees you came to love me
Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away
A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes
As if to hide a lonely tear
My life will be forever autumn
'Cause you're not here!
My husband passed away, Moody Blues accompanied him during his whole live journey, in good and bad times. Thank you for this so exeptional great music
However there's only one member of The Moody Blues on this song. Albeit, an amazing one.
*This is the first album my wife got me for Christmas, our fist year of marriage. **_Still play it on our anniversary going 42 years strong._*
Go on
I was listening when I was 6 to8, when my 2 oldest sisters were teenagers ( 15 &,17) all three of us are still listening, I'm in my 60's.
That’s beautiful.
What an unmistakable clear and melodic voice. Today, just as yesterday.
from 1978 to 2022 just amazing
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Absolutely beautiful song, reminds me of my sister walking me to school kicking the leaves that had fallen from the trees
Masterpiece ,return to my youth. Timemachine
Isn't it amazing how many funerals this has been played at. Postings from other videos say the same. Was played at my wife's funeral over 10 years ago. We had WotW album in vinyl, then CD. Saw the 30th anniversary stage concert. She loved the Autumn.
The best Justin Hayward song, even though he didn’t write it or it wasn’t with the Moody Blues. I was ecstatic when I found the War of Worlds on CD. Love it ❤️
This is, to me, one of the finest melodies I've ever heard. I purchased the double album to Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds way back in 1977 and played it over and over. Richard Burton narrated this fantastic radio-play. A newer version has Liam Neeson portraying the journalist. Was blessed to have seen the Moody Blues at U. Michigan in 1983.
Smashin' !!
...except that the album War of The Worlds doesn't have this track: it is interspersed with narration about the story, so the album DOESN'T CONTAIN THE SONG!
@@simonmultiverse6349 The song was on my 1977 vinyl. Side 2 preceding Thunder Child. Yes, it had narration during the bridge, so it didn't have this specific track, but the song was there and I've been in love with it ever since
Beautiful song great singer wow haunting and memorable wow thanks for another classic timeless song
I WAS BLESSED TO BE ABLE TO SEE THEM 2 TIMES AT THE MID-HUDSON CIVIC CENTER IN POUKEEPSIE, NEW YORK AND A MAN IN FRONT OF ME TOLD ME IF I HOLD MY CHILD UP ON MY SHOULDERS " GRAHAM EDGE " DRUMMER MAY COME DOWN OFF THE STAGE & GIVE ME HIS DRUM STICKS, WELL YES GRAHAM EDGE DID JUST THAT HOWEVER I ONLY HAVE 1 BUT WOW WHAT OUTSTANDING CONCERTS ! THE MOODY BLUES ARE 1 OF OUR FAMILY'S FAVORITE GROUPS, I LOVE ALL OF THEIR SONGS LIKE THE GROUP " CHICAGO " THERE ARE SIMPLY NO BAD SONGS !!!! THE " MOODY BLUES " ARE TALENT BEYOND MEASURE !!!! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE AMAZING SONGS ! GOD BLESS ALL
This song is fantastic. The War Of The World’s album is amazing. A masterpiece.
I agree~
Absolutely!
1:38 "...through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way..." poetically genius, and sung sublimely
I still have the video of me, 13 years old, performing this on stage for 200 or so people (sadly never posted it onto youtube). Figured out everything by ear since there was no sheet music of this *anywhere,* which ended up being one of my musical strengths as I got older. Memories!
A favourite. Beautiful lyrics and vocals. Thank you Justin. 03/24
Jeff Wayne's rendition of War of the Worlds, narrated by Richard Burton is the best I've ever heard. There is an abbreviated version narrated by Richard Burton set to Techno music but though it's good doesn't come close to this. Notable contributors are a group called Thin Lizzy and Members of The Moody Blues with Justin Hayward. If you were borne before 1965 you'll most likely remember them. The instrumentals in the album are legendary. I purchased this on 8 Track Tape back in the early 80s before the Casset Tape took hold of music. I get mesmerized by the narration with Richard Burton, nobody can tell a story like him.
Wow, Bobby, I will have to find that adaptation. Have heard this song and heard the original recordings released by Jeff Wayne in ‘87, but had no idea Thin Lizzy had worked on it earlier. They are the greatest Irish rock band ever, frontman Phil Lynott’s passing in the mid ‘80’s was so sad. Never knew they had done work on “The War of the Worlds” with Moody Blues members.
What great luck that you were engaged for this song! Your beautiful voice adds perfectly to its haunting qualities. The world will always remember.
@Justin Hayward Access chat Thank you for your appreciation! Of course it would be nice to exchange thoughts with you, seriously, but how can I know who is writing me here? Yourself or a pirate using your name? Be blessed and maintain the joy of making music for many more years!
Girl, your a good person,. but climb out of your fantasy & enjoy Your life & what You create. .. you know what I'm saying.
@@AaronHahnStudios Thank you. Life is a long road and it is not always easy-going. I have always been a great fan of Justin Hayward, and his music reminds me of my school time, my first heartaches, my innocent anticipation of the future. If I had to do it all again, I would take some different turns of the road. I never had the chance to meet one of the idols of my youth, and some are dead now. I want to take the chance to send warm greetings to those who are still alive and tell them how much I love their music. They all play in a much higher league than I do, still I am proud of each and every bit of my talent that I could bring over to here, and I keep on developing it further until my very end. Love!
I dedicate this song to my mum, Who has just passed away. Love you mum..lm going to miss you 😢
This song never gets old.
Yet the ears that hear it do....
@@AaronHahnStudios Always with the negativity, moriarity
Can totally see why Jeff Wayne wanted Justin Hayward for this, it's such a Moody Blues song.
Classic, is putting it lightly!!!!
Happy Birthday Justin today! 73 and still fabulous! Thank you for all your beautiful songs. Named my daughter after this one (even tho Jeff Wayne wrote it!) You are a gift to this world, bless you always! xx
Forever Autumn, am 55 and will always be my forever Number One xx Can so relate to this tune, all of my life xxx
I love this album, the whole thing, the music the story, just great and wayahead of it's time. No one makes music like this anymore, and being an old fart, I still prefer this like all of my music (vinyl) played loud on a record deck through a valve amp, and stereo speaker setup... Now there's nostalgia for you. Big bass speaker mid range and tweeter, you can't beat it, you feel the sound as well as hear it.
Yes, I am old too when I identify with 'no one makes music like this anymore!!'. This song takes me back to happier, simpler times.
I heard this album for the first time 43 years ago and I still love listening to it.
my Dad played this full album & we enjoyed it together..its a treasure i`ll hold forever!!
Memories listening to this with my late farther on the war of the worlds sound track. Will live with me forever
1978: this is the 45 edit from the double LP. Though not a Moody Blues record, it was adopted by the band and has appeared on some of their collections. Only a #47 in the US (#20 adult contemporary), but hit #5 at home in the UK, and was re-adopted after 9/11. For Debbie, forever. My life shall be forever autumn, for you're not here. Be at peace.
GOD!!! I love this song. It reminds me of my dog , Matilda, who passed away 5 yrs. ago.

Forever Autumn got some air play on Rock 103 in Memphis way back when. I was coming back from lunch almost back to the job site when Forever Autumn started on the radio. It was a perfect day around the middle of Oct. 1987 so what the hell I rode around and listened to it. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Don't know why I have always remembered it, just one of those things that stick with you.. We cut the system over a few days later. Huge disaster and on top of that it was the same day the stock market crashed.
Autumn is my favorite time of year, I guess living in NC it would be. The horribly hot, humid summers probably cloud my taste a bit. But autumn, the beginning of the freedom from icky weather, the wind blowing the beautiful red and gold leaves, running through piles of leaves with your pets, I just can't find this song sad. heh
Very well done. Great voice.
If only the world was as beautiful as this song
Exactly! This song transports me to happier days.
A timeless classic!!!
"Fire suddenly leapt from house to house. The population panicked and ran, and I was swept along with them aimless and lost without Carrie. Finally, I headed eastward for the ocean and my only hope of survival, a boat out of England."
People will be doing very soon...Brexshit beckons.
@@SDR702 listened to this today and thought exactly the same thing.
survival should have a colon after it.
Justin is the best singer I know and he's my fav
When I first heard the song, it grabbed me. I couldn't help but to get glassy eyed. It reminds me of the death of my mother by cancer.
So sorry about your Mom, I lost mine as well. I love this song as well takes me back to my youth.

"Forever Autumn"
1978.
Jeebus, has it been that long ago?
Mhm..
I was there in Atlanta at the Omni in 1975. Moody Blues , Seventh Sojourn , WAS JUST FANTASTICO !!!
Wow, great memory and time. The Omni in Atlanta… the Flames in NHL played there before moving to Calgary. Tom Lysiak and the Atlanta Flames ‘75. The last year my then hometown Flyers won the Stanley Cup. Wish I had seen the Moodies that early with Mike Pinder on keyboards and Mellotron. Each time I saw them from ‘83 on they were tremendous.
In memory of Jessica. 1991-2022. 🌹
I think I still have that album in the attic...I must search...
This moment is for me since April , 2017...
Always think of a girl named Karen Gnosill when I hear this; lucky enough to have dated her in the sixth form. I should have done more, been more. This always gets me in the tear gland.
@aerodog2 - yep. I came, she went ;-)
my brother always used to play this when our brother was tradgicaly killed when he was 12 rip matthew luv u always xx
Justin has a nice voice
Bit of an understatement.
lovely song...wow
forever ,alive from ashes....
This the song to my son Markie, killed at age 22 months in my arms due to a drunk driver. Every time I hear 😊 this beautiful melody he’s back in my arms again and we’re in the park laughing with the sun shining in his beautiful magnificent blond hair ❤

My daughter killed herself in 2015. this song is special to me, as if it was written for me
I am so sorry and it breaks my Heart. But in this Song she will live on. Much Love!
Our deepest condolences. As a parent, we have come close to losing our daughter at 25 by a Stroke from a clot thrown after a cesarean surgery, and son at 35 from massive heart attack. :'(
I am sorry to hear that from you
My sister lost her son in Afghanistan in 2010 this song says it all ..forever in our hearts..peace out
Hugs, hugs and more hugs to you. I am so deeply sorry for your loss.
The first anniversary of my wife's death is a few weeks away, and this song is breaking my heart. So why I do I keep playing it?
Hang in there......... ☮️☯️❤️
Because, Like Your Wife, It Matters,
"ah gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes,
as if to hide ah lonely tea-a-a-a-r-r-r-r-r-r-r,
my life will be forever autumn,
cause you're not here"
Sorry for your loss Keleigh, you keep playing it, because it's absolutely beautiful poetry about those we LOVE/Lost, and continue to Love.
@@hawkeye1836 Thanks for the kind words. I'm starting to feel like the worst is past, but I know there will always be a Becky shaped hole in my soul.
@@Keleigh3000 Keleigh, I'm here, now. As you see from the time, couldn't sleep, came back to listen, again, and again. This song is special to me, two parents, other family members, and numerous pet friends/loves. My suggestion, when the tears come, and they will, just let it rip, don't attempt tp hold back. My belief, tears are the souls way, of washing pain from the heart. Ever need support, drop ah line here, anytime, I'll get back.
For now, Big Hug from ah Big Man, who does care, your not alone.
@@hawkeye1836 Thanks bud. I sure could use a hug, I've had like five in the last year. And a big man hug? That's a rare treat. I was 6'3" by the time I was 16, there's only been a few times since then that I've felt held, rather than the holder. Thanks for caring. The anniversary is passed, I decided to stop drinking for now (it was out of control) and for the first time I feel like the worst has passed. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the rest of my life.
