  • Alex and Oliver are called to help rescue a Devon gastro pub under the cosh. Owners Faye and Yvan have been successfully running The Oddfellows for over a decade. But now they are beginning to feel the squeeze from the might of the city's increasing number of chain restaurants. At a loss of how to combat the might of the competition, they've called in Alex and Oliver for help.

Refreshing to see a makeover series that deals with good-hearted, competent people who need a bit of help, rather than the psychopathic incompetents that a certain other series seems to prefer.

They sold it in September 2021, (the lethal Corona virus no doubt shutting down the global restaurant/pub trade was the reason why, especially with most office staff working from home.) Apparently they have a very successful outdoor 'events bar' business, and no doubt much happier not to be trapped in a pub 24/7. The new 'corporate' owners closed the place, due to scathing reviews.

That grey colour on the outside looks drab to me. It was trendy for a while to have a metallic look (grey cars, stainless steel kitchen surfaces, matt grey front doors and so on) but now it's just dull. Where is the joy, the cute appeal of an independent, buzzy place? I'd get a paint brush and a trip to Wickes.

Helping means taking a person outside of their comfort zone by asking them to stretch themselves instead of by simply doing things for them Oliver did help 100% and if they are honest they do know that he helped them to change direction. I also think that Oliver helped them to find and develop problem solving skills that they never had or were not utilising fully. Teach a man to fish instead of handing them juicy grilled fish.

I think what hurt Fay more was the fact she had been told their original idea for a lunch menu wasn't any good ie too heavy etc, as she pointed out she's been doing lunches etc for a long time, but didn't like to admit it wasn't working and didn't really have a clue of what to change it to, thats why she got very defensive and hung up the phone. She gave me the impression she didn't like being told what to do from the beginning.

Here in America the restaurants catering to the local business lunch crowd offer a soup and salad bar with drink. One can walk stright in and fix their own plate. This can be done in less then 17 minutes. You can also pay while eating, then when finished you can get up and walk out without standing in line at register. A 2 minute entro every time is far too long. I'd rather see one and a half minutes more of the subject. I was quite annoyed with Oliver asking them to change the menu without any guidelines; it was very frustrating to view that and she was entitled to be very upset. If this was done to generate drama for the video, I think it was immoral. The makeover was logical and successful while, for the first time in my viewing, the proprietors of a restaurant liked people over food. The only part unsolved was more time with their children; I don't see how they could ever have time with their children.

@@ClaireBeatty I was wrong; it isn't against the law, but businesses in the US do not like it. If you do this, you better get permission from the business. This is why we have reception rooms and waiting rooms. You have to ask to speak to someone and if they aren't available or don't want to talk to you, you are asked to leave. Many businesses have "buzzer locks" where you have to be let in by electronic lock. Now, it depends on the type of business and the local culture; in a small town you could do as they did fairly freely, but not in a big city (too much crime).

It's the sort of thing I notice, however, women have fought for equality in all areas including parity in their salary.
They are soldiers on the front line, airline pilots, train, truck and bus drivers, bricklayers, electricians, plumbers, police chiefs, captains of industry, Bishops, Prime Ministers and so many more positions which were once the preserve of men.
To point out that Oliver Peyton didn't have the manners to protect a female by walking on the outside of a pavement, is to negate all that women have gained.
I'm neither a feminist nor a (pla)card waving 'ist' of anything. No tatts, piercings or anything which would categorise me.
Yes, it's nice to be waved aboard by a man in the bus queue or have a door opened but I routinely do this for men and women alike, regardless of age or ability.
I must also point out that, in the first clip of Oliver with the two bloggers, he WAS walking on the kerbside.

    • @FigaroHey

It may surprise you to know that in some countries, a gentleman walks on the inside near the wall because that way he could more easily get access to his sword (which would be on his left side, easily accessible to his right hand) and not risk accidentally striking the woman when he drew his sword to protect her from attack. Mind you, that left her exposed to mud splattered by passing carriages as well as to runaway horses and cut-purses, but at least there's a logic to the man standing by the wall. But that assumes that all men are sword-carrying gentlemen. Maybe it's just the lower orders who escorted women by walking on the street side, and sword-carrying noblemen who kept themselves near the wall.
