The best feeling I got from this hobby was when I gifted my older brother his and my grail watch on his 50th bday last year. An omega seamaster aqua terra. It was my first luxury watch. I got it used 8 yrs ago and he told me that it was his grail too. Eventually my taste changed and I was in search of a new grail. So I got it serviced with Omega a couple of months before his birthday. The AD said it might take 4-6 months to get it back so I was bummed about it since they were going to visit us on Christmas (he lived in a different country). 2 weeks before they arrived, the AD called and said it was back from service. My brother couldn't believe that I was gifting him his grail that I purchased as my grail. He thought I was just letting him borrow it. Every now and then he texts me wrist shots of his aqua terra and how proud he is of wearing it.
That is awesome!!!! Love this for him and for you.
Great story. Great watch.
You’re an excellent brother.
Agreed. I am into this for quite some time, my brother recently developed an interest into watches, so I bought him a Bulova Lunar Pilot. Oh man, the happiness - what a great feeling.
This is what I love the most about watches. Great stories built around them. Best feeling in my case was when muy father gave me for my birthday his beloved Omega Constellation and Seiko Titanium. True love that had us both in tears. Now they are part of my collection and are going to be my little kid watches when he become a grown man.
I think the size question is kind of like glasses frames, if it looks good on ya, wear it. It comes done to your taste. I tend to go a little smaller with dressy watches and don't mind something relatively larger if it's sporty
I was a big 40x20 person. Then I got a Black Bay Fifty-Eight and fell in love with the 39 size. I also tried the BB54 and found that a little too flat/wide despite its “smaller” size. But I LOVE the Explorer 124270 at 36mm.
So I think it just comes down to how the watch looks/wears on your wrist
+1 for the Explorer 36 love. My first Rolex and forsure the only choice for an Explorer or any time-only watch.
I wanna call out something not related to watches: Massive kudos to you, Teddy, for being willing to be self-reflective and willing to change your mind and your behavior. That seems to be a lost art in recent years. I hope it’s an example more guys follow.
I've accepted the fact that Rolex 36mm (explorer, datejust) and 36-37mm is absolutely perfect for my wrist. I still enjoy and love wearing my larger watches (Omega SMP 300M, IWC Pilot's Chronograph 41, Tag Heuer Formula 1), but 36 is too perfect. Also Nomos club campus 36 and Grand Seiko SBGW287 wear perfect too. No lug overhang, slim and light. Absolute perfection.
38/39 mm round case/46 mm l2l is perfect for me and my 6.25 inch wrist. It all depends on the person’s physical looks and personal preference, of course .
It was a pleasure going to your Grand Seiko event. We are very interested in attending more events in the future.
Nah I'm not Nico type, but Harrison Brown, as always
Well done. I appreciate the story of learning over time which watches are most agreeable. As we used to say, I can relate.
Being 6'4 240lbs with 7.5 inch wrists my favorite is the Rolex Submariner 126610LN, the 41mm is absolutely perfect for me.
Watch size depends on your size, build, style of dress, several factors. I'm 6'2", linebacker build with a 7 7/8" wrist. I usually dress casual and sporty, and while I have watches of different styles, my main would be dive watches 42-45mm. Anything smaller than 42 just seems too small on me, though I do have a couple dressier watches that are 40mm. 38-39 or smaller is just too small. But, as everyone rightly points out, wear what you like and makes you happy.
I’m exactly the same, 6’3” and really built as well. My sweet spot is 43-45mm, I own both Sea Dwellers 43mm that wear like a Sub on regular people, my Sky Dweller 42mm wears on me like a Datejust would on others and my Omega Deville Prestige 39.9mm is my suit watch. Even my Speedy at 42mm is small on me and I wear it as a dress watch on a leather strap. I own other pieces but I see myself typing my entire collection so I’ma stop! 🤣
@@frankv7068 Hahah, yeah I hear ya. I inherited my father's Datejust and on me it looks like one of those Swatches I had when I was a kid.
Same boat. And the watches that wear smaller than their case size get even more absurd. Daytonas are unwearable. My main is a 46mm Breitling and it’s perfect.
Note to the editor/producer: thank you for showing the eye catching watches when Teddy is talking. They are beautiful and get me thinking about the watch on the screen on my wrist!
I kinda agree with watch size, there are so many factors to consider. I normally wear 37-39 mm dress watch (I have 6.25 inches wrist) but 41mm Orient Kamasu and 44mm Casio Duro still looks good on my wrist.
We come to this channel for YOU Teddy. No hate towards Nico, but if we want to see him we will watch one of his videos. Keep doing you.
Size watch is a very personal choice and 200% link with the wrist size ! So there is no too small or too large watches !
I like 39.5mm through 42mm.
They seem to fit me the best.
“I’m wearing a Speedmaster.” I also own a Speedy. It’s my favorite watch that I own.
Oh, and I want that Seiko SSC947! Incredibly affordable. Will be owning one soon!
What is your wrist size?
Speaking to the first question and your point about not writing off any particular size. When I started collecting I was sitting about 7.75-8” wrist. I didn’t want a watch below 44mm. I lost a fair amount of weight, and now sit around 7-7.25” wrist size. I inherited a couple watches 33-35mm… these were sports/leaning to dress watches. I now LOVE this size. Two of my favourites are a 1960s Cyrpus I inherited that’s around 34mm, and my 34mm Timex Marlin reissue ❤
I would like to see you and Adrian Barker from Scotland in a video togheter talking watches 😀.
Agree 👍🏼
I don’t mind Nico’s comedy 😂 but I personally am a huge fan of TGV and would love to see the two talk shop!!!
great video as always and if you're reading these comments, a definite yes to getting nico on the channel, nothing wrong with a bit of variety
I loved how you mentioned we should give away watches to other people so they can enjoy them. Thank you, Teddy.
Always love collabs with other UA-camrs. I know they require a decent amount of planning and cost, but it makes for fantastic content. Who doesn't love a crossover episode?
Someone actually complimented me on my watch yesterday, first time ever
Nice dawg
I’ve got Rolex fatigue. I get so happy when I see people wearing other luxury brands.
I agree to a point. I feel that since luxury watches or watches in general are not worn be as many people, you hear less about them outside of the small circle of watch enthusiasts/fans. It’s not like an overplayed artist (looking at you Taylor) because something like that is more in reach other everyone (outside of concert tickets).
Is this something we’re just telling ourselves now?
How many people do you know IRL who own a Rolex? I’ve only met 1 lol
I agree there is lot of other brands very good who produce insane quality watches. Rolex is a little boring and the AD experiences are always awful cause they are so upset themselves about the impossibility to delivery anything to the clients
@@fj7509 Well I work in a busy office on Wall Street so depending on who’s in the shop that day I probably see at least 50. Even the women wear them.
@@fj7509 Rolex fatigue can just come from that being all others talk about, all you read about because of hype and influence, or those guys that post 12 hulks in a display case on reddit and expect people to bow to them meanwhile we personally hate them
Great video!! I definitely grew in my size interest. I thought 33mm was where I should look (as a woman watch enthusiast) but that 33mm quartz watch got happily given to a student employee who is really enjoying being able to tell the time in analogue. I have also given her a few watch straps for it to add variety. I’m the meantime I have a deposit on the white Omega moon watch and wearing a 39.5mm Farer. 😎
Can’t beat gold polished Roman numerals that sparkle like jewels in the sunlight. Loving the sun ray dial man that pops! amzwatch watches. What a beautiful subtle piece.
Great job on this Teddy. I appreciate your willingness to revisit the manner in which you discuss watch size.
I bounce between two watches that are 40 and 36. Both are wonderful for different reasons.
36mm is way too small for real men.
@@maitrehgwhy are you the way you are?
Thanks, Teddy. That was fun. I went to graduate school in Cleveland, and you and your store are the perfect excuse for me to visit my alma mater
Giving a personal watch to a friend is awesome
I did that recently with my neighbor. He had mentioned that he never had a dependable everyday watch; just cheap pieces that never ran well. His look when I handed him the box for my Timex Expedition was definitely worth it. He wears it all the time now. Yeah, it's like a $125 watch, but to him, it was like being gifted a Rolex.
Teddy! Thank you for answering my question about dethroning Rolex! I appreciate your consideration and insight!
A video with nico can actually be reall chill for example when he showed his watch collection
So i would like to see that
Good vid as usual. Spot on about giving the extra watch to people who might like them more than we currently do. As collectors, never mind buyer's remorse, sometimes we just have too many watches, or we simply have max capacity the box can handle and yet another new watch catch our interest. Inventory management is going to become important at some point. I'm a small collector but earlier this year, I've given a Tissot away. I still loved it very much at the time and it's actually the watch that fitted me the best, but I gave it away because it's the only watch that I had no emotional ties with, and it helped in making room for a future purchase (that I still haven't made yet). I gave it to a good friend who kind of wanted a watch but never quite got around to buying one. Didn't want to spend the money. I feel like that was the essence of "finding the watch a good home".
I love the curation on your website. WOW
I total agree with John Mayer - he said he wants to live in a 37mm world - me too !
A little boys world.
@@maitrehglol nice
I get all my button ups from Banana Republic for a little over 10 years now. Probably have around 60 and still wear the ealiest ones. They've not worn out or lost buttons. Their slim fits are perfect on me. 2 of the oldest ones (same shirt fabric/pattern in different colours) have torn around one forearm because I always have the cuff folded up and I guess the tightness ended up getting the best of it. But that's two of the older shirts out of 60+.
Keep it Midwest with the collab, Random Rob, Watch Chris, Harrison.
👍👍👍
Brooks Brothers 👍
i have a big wrist but i like 38.5mm
Teddy being mocked for not wearing a watch: I WAS IN THE POOL!! I WAS IN THE POOL!!
No excuse! There are plenty of options capable of dealing with such an environment: Rolex Deepsea, Omega Ploprof, Sinn U50 Hydro, etc.
@@LanguagesWithAndrewI don’t surf or kayak with my watches anymore… lost two Apple Watches that way and would feel devastated if I lost my Tissot or Rolex lol
@@LanguagesWithAndrew Nobody needs an excuse to take their watch off.
😂
Any decent 100m diver should be able to handle a. pool
i really believe that 38/39 is a general perfect watch size, it is never too small for large wrists, and never too big for the smallest wrist.
I have a 6.25 inch wrist. I generally can't stand any watch on me that isn't at least 41mm.
@@dr.kevinmoore8889 ofc its a matter of personal taste at the end of everything. To me 38 isthe best spot for everyone, ive seen 37/38mm on big wrists that looked awesome. Just look at YoureTerrific for example, he has a big wrist presence (the 7 inches meme kicks in ahhahah) and yet he wears a 36mm explorer and it looks awesome. Its just a matter of personal taste
a no to the nico loenard idea from my pov.
I like this channel being on some grade, some level.
Teddy I appreciate your perspective on watch size. I have a chunky 7.5" wrist and any watch less than 42mm looks like a toy on me.
But it is a toy….
Look in the mirror from a few feet away. Smaller watches aren't as small as you see with your eyes from a foot away. Most big watch guys never give something smaller a proper chance. You get used to any reasonable size after a few days.
I have a Seamaster 300 with 42mm that I love how it looks in my wrist. I also had a 40mm PRX which I couldn’t ever stand how it looked on my wrist despite loving the watch itself. So it really depends on what you expect from that specific watch and your preferences.
Yehhh!! Teddy, Nico, Adrian, Andrew, Chisholm, Brit and Jenni. All star watch crew.
I've come to learn that it's not size, it's context. Dress watches can should wear smaller, while sports watches should wear bigger. Field watches, when trying to keep to the nature and history of the watch, should wear smaller, while pilot watches, within the contextual use case, typically wear bigger.
For me Nico is controversial and I am not sure if it brings you further.
You are very different from all theses grey market dealers, I think you are much more honest.
Though I like him and he is funny.
Agree, started with nico when i knew nothing about watch brands and wanted to learn while laughing but after i discovered teddys channel is the only one i follow for serious information and news. If Nico is gonna talk like a professional about watches and wont be all over the place with his persona then im sure its gonna be a great video.
I agree 40mm is perfect but again it all depends on wrist size and personal preference. I have a 7.25” wrist and 38mm just looks to small.
I don't think Nico is at all compatible with your ethos lol but I loved every video with you and Mark. I could also see you having delightful conversations with The Urban Gentry or Brittany Pearce!
Yes to Nico. Contrasting personalities will make for a great episode.
I love my Submariner 16610, it's the perfect sub to add to the collection.
So many factors. But, I’d say 36-41mm Is a good area to stay in small to large wrists.
Real men never go below 40mm.
Love your channel with so many stellar watches! For me the MAMACOO’ watch is my favorite. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.
Bring Nico for sure. Appreciate your channel love your insight.
I'd say 38mm is the perfect or "best" size, but on me personally I love a 36mm. Can wear up to a 42mm and have it look good though, so... it depends lol
Real men never go below 40mm.
Interesting choice of clothing today Teddy. Looks like you're about to go on Safari, in which case I suggest something practical like a G Shock or Rolex Explorer.
I have 6.5 inch wrists. I wear either a 45.5mm planet ocean or a 39mm legend diver. I think I’m able to pull both off really well.
Each to their own. I have 8 inch wrists and wouldn't wear that large PO as I would think it too big! I like 39mm and agree with Teddy that the Speedmaster is the right size at 42mm.
When I see boys asking "is this watch too small", I think of my dad and his 33mm Roamer while built like a Kodiak bear with 8+ inch wrists.
Yeah but that’s also external factors playing into style. Not just about the person
Back in the 1980s watches were small, hair was big and shoulder pads were big.
Imagine trying to wear massive shoulder pads now in your suit. Would look insane.
In the same way a massive guy wearing a 33mm watch today would not look good.
Love your videos! Teddy and Nico video would be great, for sure he will watch the language with you. I would look forward to it. Thanks Teddy
Hey Teddy! Love your content. New follower. Just purchased my first watch from your website and I'm stoked. I fell in love with The Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38mm in one of your videos. I also threw in G-Shock bc I was able to fit it under my budget! I'm excited!
I've looked at you and Nico as the Pseudo Yin and Yang of the Watch Community. Both are ridiculously knowledgeable about the watch universe. Nico is overtly passionate and over the top; while you are just as passionate about watches , but more (for lack of a better word) refined and almost professorial in your approach. But yes yes YES!!! A collaboration is essential!
Teddy! Obviously love the channel that’s why I’m here. I’d love to see some reviews or deep dives on Yema! I own a couple and love them, but they have their own set of issues. Love to get your take on them sometime.
Teddy, I hope this question makes it onto a future Q&A: Is there an objective standard to measure the quality of a sunburst/sunray dial? Or, is it all pretty much the same? How do you judge the quality of a sunburst/sunray dial? Thanks!
37-39 is perfect for my small wrists.
Ginault Ocean Rover 2 is the best watch I've ever owned. Like Submariner 5 digit, perfect proportion and size.
I have an 8 1/4 wrist..a 40 looks fine on me..a 36 looks small. 39 would be ok as well. I currently wear a Seaholm Rover. It checked off boxes for me because of my job and outdoor pursuits being highly shockproof, waterproof and antimagnetic. 41mm case width.
It depends on the size of your wrist. I have small wrists so the ideal sizes for me is 39-40mm. But sports watch are different, so I start from 40-42mm.
The best watch size is the same as the best shoe size: the one sized to YOUR wrist. Figure out what your wrist's golden ratio is and choose accordingly.
good comment
Not true at all …🫣🤣
Totally different than a show size. Improperly sized shoes will cause significant discomfort and impact the actual use of the shoe. Like, the style of shoe is personal, but not the shoe size. But the vast majority of watch sizing is 100% personal preference
JLC - Innovation and excellence craftsmanship
I bought a watch from MAMACOO lightly used for my last milestone birthday. Don't wear it as much as it deserves, but not afraid to, either. It's stunning . Good taste, Sir.
Best watch size obviously depends on your wrist.
39-42mm are perfect for me - although I have watches ranging from 34-47mm that fit well. I like having the variety.
My wrist is 17.5 inches btw.
Centimetres you mean :)
Size depends on watch and person. For me, dive 42mm and for gada/dress 38 to 40mm. Depends not just on wrist size but also style of watch, type of watch, style preference of the person etc... could get a drssy watch bigger size and it can be casual. Changes look of the watch but also depends on our personal perception. My 2 cents! =)
Or in extreme case: A Seiko Arnie will look monstrously out of proportion in most people’s wrist, but it looks a bit small in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s wrist.
I like the watch I got from MAMACOO. That rubber strap combo looks really cool! Been wearing it since last year and love every minute of it.
I’ve been wanting a Teddy and Nico Leonard video for like 2 years. Two completely opposite people with the same passion… it would be an interesting collaboration
Would love to see you and Nico sit down and talk watches!!
Depends on the watch. My SLA047 wears like a charm, so does my SJE085. One is 44mm and one is 36mm. I wear both and feel great with either one. My buddy has a sub and a GMT master 2. Both didnt really fit my wrist well due to its overall flatness and lack of case dimension.
36-38mm is the best size for most men up to 7.5” wrists.
Thanks Teddy, another great video!
Hey Teddy, loved that last question and your answer.
Would love to see you do something like a once a year video on the general state of fashion. I would imagine my wife would I agree I could probably use some help. *LOL*
Didn't know about your Grand Seiko open house. I would have liked to have been there. I'll watch for the next one if you have it. Not a bad drive from SW Ohio.
It's not just you. Almost all of watch UA-cam shows a preference to smaller wrists.
Well, the bigger YTers anyway.. Mark at Islander, Ben's Watch Club, Wristcrunch guy, the ladies of course (Jenni Elle and Britt Pearce) all have smaller wrists.
Don't know about Nico, and don't care..
Bring on Nico! As much as he's associated with the grey market and luxury watches, he always brings a sense of realism when he talks about luxury watches as aspirational goods rather than necessary financial investments. He's consistently argued against people who think everyone should own a Rolex, or that you should own a watch 10% your annual salary. Like you, he's a big supporter of Casio.
I also think where you differ is of great interest. Where you advocate for the watch of the everyman and the value that watch producers provide all over the world, Nico knowledge of the swiss luxury market is as broad as it is deep. I'd love to see where you both agree and disagree.
At the end of the day, it means a lot to Nico that both he and his channel are being accepted by both the watch community and watch producers, and I'm sure it'd mean a ton for him to speak to your audience of the average watch consumer.
Dress watch: 40mm (Hamilton Jazzmaster).
Everyday watch: 41mm (Omega SMPc).
Racing watch: 43mm (Tag Heuer Carrera).

43 max for me. Preferably with a short lug to lug. The Skx007 case nails it for me. 42,5mm, but somehow looks compact.
Size…depends on your wrist, your taste, and the watch. Just try ans enjoy.
I'd love to see Niko on this channel. I'd also be interested in seeing TGV of The Urban Gentry.
36mm for dress and sports watches. 96mm for all others.
Teddy, great video as usual. I'm glad that you nailed this "perfect size" watch topic. I'm actually so annoyed with all these UA-camrs who keep delivering this idea in pretty much every watch video. I have a 7.5" wrist Dia, which I have always thought it's average size. I feel anything below 40 mm is too small for my wrist (considering all the other factors you mentioned, lug to lug, design, etc). My personal sweet spot in my eyes is 43-44 depending on those variable factors. I have one 42 mm Hamilton that looks bigger than my other 44 mm watches (it almost doesn't have a bezel). However, I do get the point that most people wearing watches nowadays have smaller wrists but also depending on the demographics. In countries like the Netherlands, Sweden and a lot of East European countries, the average wrist-size is around 8". I totally agree with you.... Let everyone enjoy what they like instead of setting standards for watch sizes. After all, Watch-collecting is very much, personal.
Getting Nico to do a video with you would be very interesting to see, Do the budget watch shopping challenge with him!
Wrist size should be a dominant factor in deciding what is a good case size. How it wears on the wrist outweighs all the other considerations, thus it's a bit pointless to try to identify the 'perfect' size independent of that.
Currently wearing the Zelos mako 3 mother of pearl. I thought it was the best looking dial ever. “Once I get this I won’t want any other watch” 😂 ignoring the specks. So thick to heavy, now I’m only want thin titanium watches. It has completely shaped my taste. Got it on a artem strap to cut the weight.
I also have a “bed watch”
Seeing my question get answered took me by surprise, a pleasant surprise 🎉
Sounds interesting to have Nico and Terry doing something together. While both of them being very, very knowledgeable when it comes to watches, thery are very different personalities as well.
So pick some controversial topic, just to make it even more fun for everyone!
Hi teddy much love from 🇵🇭
Grand Seiko a lot of times is what I would pick.
Got a Chopard LUC sport 40mm fits my 17cm wrist perfect. My 40mm Tudor north flag feels much bigger. So it's not that simple.
Another great video, Teddy. I don't see the link for getting notifications of your upcoming events. Did I miss it?
We would love you to have Nico, He’s on the polar opposite of you (Personality wise) & would be a very funny to watch how your interactions with each other play out.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssss, Teddy and Nico make it happen
Bring in Nico! Great episode, as usual.
