I consider this lecture very important, because excavations below the GWT are very common in my area, and thus sand boils, heave, and failure of cohesive bottom of the excavation are serious problems that need to be always considered. It would be wonderful if you could do a lecture on the remedies for controlling these risks --for example: dewatering, where should be the pumps located, and what amount of flow should they take (I've usually found contradicting opinions about dewatering on these conditions, with some people saying that the pumps that others suggest worsen the problem because they increase the gradient). Most Soil Mechanics books treat the zero eff stress condition very quickly, and just calculate the gradient, but don't have exercises on designing a solution for decreasing the gradient. Given the serious risks that these kind of failures involve, a lecture on this would be marvellous, IMHO. Thanks a lot for sharing your lectures, they are of great help, and you explain everything very clearly!!!

sir. can piping start occuring within a section of dam?. isn't it start from the downstream side where exit gradient is maximum..and slowly it propogate toward upstream.?!
