The gratitude Gibbs showed to Madlib was very heartfelt. You can tell he appreciates the level Madlib helped bring his music too. Madlib doesn't even really work with many rappers.
Mad respect to the horn players (esp. the trumpet) for managing to play that quiet and sit in the mix without overpowering anybody while still managing to retain tone. Horns naturally overpower everything else, and especially in a context that intimate and quiet, it’s hard to play like that.
i've got problem with those horns : trumpet and saxo are both one or two comas higher than the rest of the orchestra - my ears are deeply annoyed, whatever their talent is. (sorry for my poor english skills)

Bass player has insane pocket, groove, and improvisation. He’s not playing anything crazy, but is playing enough to the point it leaves a good taste in your mouth.
When I started listening to Gibbs 10 years ago I never thought that I'd be seeing him in such a context. I am 100% here for it. He deserves recognition fame and success.

This is one of my favorite taped performances Ive ever seen. The synergy was great, amazing production, band played great. Gibbs and Madlib killed it. Gibbs killed it with the G chain, stussy track RL color jacket. Chanel glasses. Fitted. Butter. Sauce. Performance was clean af. This got me through some tough Covid times. This video is therapy haha
I love it when the whole performance is on point. But in an organic way. Everyone is doing their own thing but it somehow fits. You’re absolutely right about Freddie’s fit and how he wore it. Madlib letting the band shine while he just adds the finishing touches with his bongos and shakers. It’s masterful.
Liam Lynch that would be dope but I feel like there’s a time and place for it. So much of Madlib’s music is rooted in soul and uses real instruments anyways so it’s a pretty seamless transition. Sounds great tho this is my favorite tiny desk for sure
Saw him at the great hall in Toronto years ago... it was a trip lol Madlib performing on turntables is less of a set and more of sitting in on his own personal listening session... which was amazing albeit unexpected
In one song he said his flow is god-level. And, well…I can’t argue with that. Listening to him ride the beat is like Magic Mountain - a rollercoaster in the dark. You never know what’s coming next.
I’ve seen Mos backed by Robert glasper, Derrick Hodge, Chris Dave and and dj jahi Sundance. One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. Umi says was a stand out but they also did a madvillian Meatgrinder cover which was epic

This is one of my favorite taped performances Ive ever seen. The synergy was great, amazing production, band played great. Gibbs and Madlib killed it. Gibbs killed it with the G chain, stussy track RL color jacket. Chanel glasses. Fitted. Butter. Sauce. Performance was clean af. This got me through some tough Covid times. This video is therapy haha
I love it when the whole performance is on point. But in an organic way. Everyone is doing their own thing but it somehow fits. You’re absolutely right about Freddie’s fit and how he wore it. Madlib letting the band shine while he just adds the finishing touches with his bongos and shakers. It’s masterful.

Its also because the band is not playing loud. Many of the bands in tiny desk play too loud.

Liam Lynch that would be dope but I feel like there’s a time and place for it. So much of Madlib’s music is rooted in soul and uses real instruments anyways so it’s a pretty seamless transition. Sounds great tho this is my favorite tiny desk for sure

I’ve seen Mos backed by Robert glasper, Derrick Hodge, Chris Dave and and dj jahi Sundance. One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. Umi says was a stand out but they also did a madvillian Meatgrinder cover which was epic
