    i just recieved my intro radio 3 days ago. and as a noob, i didnt know i needed to procure a programming cable separately. its on its way. however in the mean time, ive been taking notes from your videos, and doing some cursory listenings on my radio. i see that theres waaaaay more involved and much much more you can do with HAM, than i originally thought. i simply wanted one, for the most typical reason, in case of emergency, or something really bad going down. but now its starting to make a lot of sense how people can really get lost in the rabbit hole of HAM radio. im getting ever more interested as i go. i only hope that what started as a back up for comms, dont turn into a expensive habit. thank you for all the info

      @@Awakened_Angel I have recieved the cable. And the proper one actually by dumb luck. I wasn't sure what to look for at the time. But I have since programmed it. And it appears there is just minimal ham communication in my area. I find it odd. But there's only one repeater in my city, and even still I've not heard any traffic. I get the repeater reply, but no humans transmitting. Kinda sucks. And I haven't found any ham clubs in my area. Not yet anyhow. I've not given up.

Have you taken your radio out anywhere and tried that way? I tried to connect to someone I know via a repeater and it wouldn’t work. I seriously hope we both find more people to tune into on our radios lol. I’ve joined some Facebook groups to see if they’re helpful. I think lots of radio activity is lessened atm with all that’s going on. Sucks 😫 When you say ‘proper cable’ May I ask which one you purchased? I hear there’s lots of fakes out there. If you are out in the woods, and you get in trouble, and you got your little 5 watt HT, and there is not a repeater with in range, your screwed, plain and simple. Now I use a TYT, UV8000e 10 watt HT, with an Abbree 18.8 inch tactical folding antenna. Better range for transmitting and receiving, but still I would not count on it in an emergency, unless I knew I could hit a repeater, and of course some one has to be listening. Next is you use your HT outside the legal 2 meter band width, your going to heat your radio up big time. Due to bad SWR's. And you posted the legal band width early in your video, thank you. Last, your your technicians license at least, so you will be legal. And don't use these for FRS, go to Walmart and get legal FRS radio's. Also why are people still using the Baofeng, yes its Cheap, but for a few dollars more, I paid 90 dollars from Amazon for my TYT, you get a much better radio.

    • @TalonSurvival
      @TalonSurvival  3 роки тому +2

      Well this is tough to answer quickly as we have to get into antenna theory. And you will find many hams have their own "opinions" about this. Lets start with, you will never have a "perfect" antenna. Antennas are all a matter of some compromise to achieve a focused result. The closer you get to a resonant antenna like a 1/2 wave with proper ground plane the better performance you should see.
      With the "mag plate" you are discussing, the problem you will run into is that it will be difficult to have a legitimate ground plane for the mag antenna to radiate efficiently. This is what mag munt antennas are designed to work with, using a car or some metal base as a ground plane in a horizontal plane.
      A while ago, I set up a pack with a 1x2x4 metal box in a molle pouch with coax running from the radio to a baseplate mount SMA connector on the top which then allowed me to connect an SMA antenna. The baseplate SMA adapter allowed to ground the shield to the metal box acting as a ground plane. Still not a full size ground plane my any means, but it was better than nothing. Also gave a stout antenna mount for the pack. I used the SMA version of the Diamond SRJ77CA on the top. Worked really well. I also like that Diamond antenna (SRJ77CA) connected directly to the radio as well.
