  • Do smokers smash the health system by being sick all the time? This video looks at some interesting statistics. By on-average dying early - do they save the country a fortune in aged-care costs? Sir Humphrey Appleby had something to say about this matter too.

They should put a price signal (tax) on it so families drop their swimming pool subscriptions in favour of that juicy doub quato pounda temptation.
      That will improve health :)

P.S. Obesity is the highest health care expense, even with the skewed smoking related figures.
You are more likely to suffer prescribed smoking related illnesses from poor lifestyle even if your a non smoker.

I agree, I've never smoked but smokers are paying a fortune in tax so they probably contribute more money than anyone, when I played sports the local hospital was always full on Sunday morning with sports people with injuries, later in life lots of people who have played sports need new knees, hips and other ailments so sport also costs the NHS lot's of money, obesity seems to be the main cost though

The government in Australia has essentially turned tobacco products into prohibition with their taxes and have now created a huge criminal enterprise. A packet of cigarettes cost $40 plus AUD but same pack in Singapore cost $3 SG. The tax is obscenely high and shows how addicted our government is to cigarettes. The govt can’t afford for smokers to give up.

A huge burden on the economy is the incredibly wasteful spending of governments, the constant ridiculous bureaucratic interference in business and daily lives, and stupid projects like giving away our gas reserves to foreign companies, or ports for China, or razing the Great Dividing Range for wind and solar farms, etc, etc, etc... Smokers and health cost discussions are just distractions from the real issue of deeply corrupted politics and governance.

I don't play sports, break bones and other injuries regularly but I could if I wanted too. I do drive a car, and you probably do too but I choose not to drive stupid but you might, and you have that right. The free floating spike is then flushed by the body’s detox systems. Also nicotine is a powerful anti inflammatory. More info at BrianArdis.

Its interesting. I live in in a community that has historically had a dis-proportionally high number of smokers. ~75% of the people I have had to watch go under due to prescribed smoking diseases were non smokers. That's subjective, like I said there is very high rate of smokers.

  • @thegeneralist7527
    @thegeneralist7527 23 дні тому +6

Great observation. I would add that the smoking tax was intended to reduce health care costs and increase individual health but has had the opposite effect. We now spend more on health care than at any time in history, and the overall health, happiness and well being of nations has never been poorer. Healthcare service is also poorer than ever. Smoking has certain benefits, such as reduced appetite, increased focus, reduced stress and promotes socialization and relaxation.
A well known economic principle is that increasing tax rates actually reduces total tax revenues. Taxes are a penalty on work, thus increased taxes discourages work. Fewer people working less hard over time results in a vicious cycle of decreasing productivity and tax revenue, and services can only be maintained by government debt which results in inflation. Economic hard times have resulted in an opioid and homelessness epidemic because high taxes hit the poor hardest.
Furthermore, where is the increased overall health and well being of society that was expected? An obesity epidemic, a mental health epidemic. A cancer epidemic. Social cohesion and individual freedom under threat. Even infectious disease epidemics (if you believe we actually experienced a real respiratory disease epidemic recently).
The best of intentions with the worst of results. I expect that carbon taxes will have a similar effect if not worse.
Such is the cost of poorly done science and socialism.

This is very interesting. My father smoked from about the age of 7(he was born in 1915 and was paid in cigarettes for a paper round ) and continued on until his death aged 65. He drew 4 months of old age pension . He was never ill right up until he was made redundant at the age of 60. 5 years of unemployment meant he rarely left the home and would sit infront of the TV from getting up to going to bed. So when he did go, it was a thrombosis that did it.
This was blamed on the smoking and that obviously was a factor BUT I have always thought it was the sitting with no excercise that did the dead.
He was not overweight and was an army man for 16 years.
His brother who I believe was also a heavy smoker , lived into his 80s.
Smoking is often used to supress appetite. Obesity is in my mind anyway, far more of a burden to the health system than smoking.

During the conversation he mentioned that 10% of ALL insurance premiums, whether motor vehicles, home, business and personal, was to cover the cost of smoking related damage from major fires to burns on furniture etc and even some car accidents caused by smokers distracted while lighting up. He wasn't surprised when I told him that the damaged truck had crashed because the driver dropped a lighted cigarette on his lap and while trying to brush it away had lost control of the vehicle!

A very topical topic indeed mate. Earlier this year I stumbled upon an opportunity to have a late night discussion with an opposition politician and his off-sider about this matter. Fortunately I had had a quick look at the numbers beforehand so could let them know that the tobacco taxes collected in Australia now covered the entire federal health budget.
The original excuse for these progressively increasing taxes (now A$160 / 50 grams retail 😳) was to cover the increased burden on the cost of healthcare. The matter was left, by the lazy politicians, in the hands of idealist lobbyists and bureaucrats to "manage".
    Same thing with alcohol.

There are many other differences between Australia and France besides smoking rates. These include eg the pension, social security and aged care systems. So it might not be that enlightening.
It would probably be better to look instead at the costs of matched groups of smokers and non-smokers in Australia in terms of their use of healthcare, community care and aged care services. Plus their unemployment, disability and aged care pension costs.

I don’t care if you smoke or not…..IF YOU DO, DON’T THROW YOUR FVCKING CIGARETTE BUTTS ON THE GROUND OR OUT YOUR FVCKING CAR WINDOW!!!!!
As a council worker, if I had a cent for every cigarette butt I cleaned up, I’d be as rich as Croesus.
I tried smoking when I was 19, a couple of months into it, I came to the conclusion that 1) this shite is costing me money just to blow smoke out of my mouth, and 2) all its doing is giving me bad breath, and a sore throat.
I crushed the packet I had, and decided smoking was certainly not for me.

People choose to do different things and each of these activities come with a given set of risks. I don't choose to smoke, but do choose to participate in sports where I am likely to be injured. If we start banning things because they increase HC costs, where does it end? Individual freedom can't be a casualty.

Studies in the 1980's showed conclusively that smokers paid taxes on tobacco that more than covered their later illnesses associated with smoking. Society is disgusted and intolerant about so many issues these days so why not include those that smoke. Good to see you branching out with you channel.

Alcohol causes more legal and health costs than smoking. No one wants to factor the financial costs of the man hours lost due to the effects of alcohol, the families broken or destroyed, the crippled or the dead from impaired drivers, DV (alcohol is a known contributing factor), common assault, aggravated assault, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, destruction of private or public property, etc.

I regularly get bombarded with private health cover comparison companies pushing me to switch to their favored insurance company of the day. I found out the Psychiatric cost are now the one insurance companies are worried about these are on going with potentially on going and not stopping. I said to him what about heart bypass surgery and they said yeah its a bit but nothing compared to high end psych costs these days. So if you drop the psychiatric costs on the insurance saves more money, also pregnancy costs or that to start a family.

I smoked for 50 years and have never used the medical system. I don't smoke anymore because it was just too expensive. I now hate the smell of smokers, which I now realise was me. Never smoked around our children or in closed doors but now they are on vapes because of their peers, against our advice, which is an ongoing cost for them.

Well done analysis and almost complete. Why, may I ask, in every discussion about smoking is the WHY ignored. Smokers smoke for a reason, not all just have a mad addiction. What about the biological effects, the calming and other manifest physical effects, and the questions change to other ways of effecting those changes for people in a timely manner without inhaling burnt vegetation. Or, going by other figures in the famed report of smoker V non-smoker lung cancer rates, asking the question, why did smokers who mixed cannabis in their cigarettes have the same instance of lung cancers as the non-smokers? Jusk asking. 😉

Back when smoking was promoted, statistics showing that smoking can save a lot of money was communicated with governments. This is well established for more than 70 years now. That is why smoke taxes must go up, as smoker numbers go down. It is not to make the same money, is to make for more healthcare, pensions, etc.

I worked in healthcare setting up oxygen for those who were terminally ill. I was very surprised to learn how many weren't smokers . Smokers accepted their condition much better than non smokers, who seemed to believe their 'halo' of healthy living would offer them some sort of immunity.
Truth is it's other chemicals in food and environment causing all the problems but smoking is used as a scapegoat to deflect blame while at the same time allowing extra revenue-raising thru taxes.

I've been smoking for 55 years. Rarely got sick in earlier years, now only see a doctor once a year. The amount of taxes I have payed on tobacco products, I should be eligible for 5 lung transplants😅 if I was inclined to follow the government food guidelines, and be 50lbs overweight, not having to pay taxes on sugar and carbohydrates it would cost the health care system 10 X as much!!!!!

Smoking? My experience with smoking goes back to when i was 9 years old when I had my first one. Smoked on and off. Started heavy when I got to 17(1991). Smoked till I was 22 quitting in April 1996. Taylor made cigs I found to be very bad but roll your own tobacco I enjoyed. Anyhow fast forward 26 years just after Government over reach started with convid i was sick from stress(Government) . Wife pushed me to have a cigar but I did not want to start smoking again(money). Well I thought fark it they Government will kill us before a smoke. First puff from a yummy cigar my nose cleared up and stopped coughing instantly. I have not stopped since. Government tax is evil. Some of us get to a age where we want to enjoy things but who does not want that?

I gave up smoking in 2003, when the cost of a packet of B&H Extra Mild was just on $ 20 per pack of 20. My packet a day habit cost me $7.2k per annum. If price parity with Malboro reds has been maintained, then that same packet would now cost $54 (not $27 as in the video). Consequently, not counting the many health benefits, I would have saved some $200k or more over the past 20 years. Unfortunately, a large portion of this would have gone to other bad habits.
The sad reality is, that if everyone gave up smoking, the government would need to source the missing revenue elsewhere. Let's see what will happen when all the ICE powered vehicles will be forced off the roads and the government realizes how much they were getting from fuel excise and VAT.
