Someone’s got to mention the XH2s’ 14 bit readout in Flog 2 🥲🙏🏽 It’s such a key factor that doesn’t get talked about much. It’s a great talking point for XH2s Flog 1 vs Flog 2, as well as XH2s vs any other fuji camera… AS WELL as the XH2s vs any other prosumer camera haha.
I feel like fuji gang is such a united community. I'm glad fuji "gave" us the xh2s so not only we can keep gathering to talk about our gear, but to also use the best prosumer camera on the market
Please do get together again and possibly with Serr. I'm a Canon fanboy since the late 80s. Delved in Nikon in the 90s and then went back to Canon. But I got my loved one a FUJI XT3 3 years ago. Ive been planning and saving to fully go to Fuji this past months so I could join her. I envy you guys but I'm very thankful for the continued love for Fuji. Fuji is an amazing cam indeed the past 5 years. I hope you can someday talk about the Fujinon MK Cinema Series zoom someday as not many people know Fuji has been in the cinema business for years now perhaps not just in the camera until the HS2s. Bless you guys.
Small correction: recording in linear does not require more data to store it. Linear gamma means that no tonal mapping has been applied to the image after being put through the ADC. The reason we don’t record in linear is because the image it produces is not akin to what the human eye sees, thus the whole purpose of gamma curves. The reason we shoot with a logarithmic gamma curve is because it “saves” tonal data that might otherwise be inaccurately translated as the image is read from 12-bit and stored in 10 or 8 bits. It’s pretty much like if you raised the shadows on a raw image, exported it to jpeg and raised the shadows some more, and comparing it to raising the shadows on an original jpeg without the aforementioned raw pipeline. The difference in shadow detail would be quite evident, as well as the difference in noise.
Hm, I feel like this point about Linear is a bit misleading. You can’t store the full range of a linear image within a h265 or ProRes file, or something similar. So I mean, I guess what you say is sorta correct in that you “could” encode your h265 in linear and it wouldn’t use more data than LOG encoding, but you also would be throwing away tons of data and your image would never look right. It would be more helpful to acknowledge which formats actually CAN store a linear image correctly, and talk about how much massively larger they are than a LOG encoded h265. EXR for example. linear EXR is a great intermediate format for VFX but obviously not ideal for acquisition if file size is even a remote concern.
I love the images of what I get out of flog2 and I’ve also been enjoying the Braw using the video assist for the xh2s. It looks softer and you can get a real film looking image from the sensor but it takes awhile to get use to using the Braw.
also guys- X-T5 6.2k is still 16:9 instead of 3:2 open gate. the 4k isn't oversampled unless heavy crop, and rolling shutter is worse than X-S20 as well. X-S20 over X-T5 any day for video.
Let's goooo, such a great hybrid. And yeah we will dive more into that. Also watch the first video we made. We talk about workflow a bit more in that one
Excellent video. This chat was really good with so much important information. I confess that I invested in VNDs and Mist among them. To this day I haven't used Mist. But I intend to use it, despite understanding your advice. But I need to test and "make mistakes". LOL
My List: 1. I keep getting stumped in Davinci Resolve when setting up my timeline settings and node tree to grade F-LOG2 2. X-H2S, I video musical performances of one or two singers with a piano, autofocus sometimes gets confused. Manual would be hard in these cases.
Thanks for commenting! I highly recommend watching the first Fuji talk video! We talk about nod tree structure and a simple workflow . As for the AF - this is a classic case of the xh2s needing subject tracking. But in that situation, you'll have to determine what's more important. If the artist performance and facial expressions are important use the eye tracking mode. If you need to do a mix of objects and talent, you need split the difference and use multi unfortunately. And dial in the speed and sensitivity
You asked for questions for the next video. Can you give a simple, bottom line recommendation for which Data Level setting is appropriate (video range or full range)? Or maybe basic scenarios where one is appropriate vs the other? I tried to read up on it and what I found just makes my head spin. All I do is record cooking shows for publishing to UA-cam. I use F-Log 2 because I need maximum dynamic range to capture white plates and such on the table, as well as skin tones. Based on what I've read, I "think" video range is the correct option, but I'm not sure and I'm not even sure if it would matter one way or the other for what I'm doing. I edit in FCP.
Truly love my xs20 paired with Sirui nightwalker. Amazing set start with. Lightweight, great image quality and outstanding battery life and can even be upgraded with a ninja or blackmagic recorder if you want to record in raw. Best choice for beginners imo.
Light doubles with every stop so it is exponential scale. Mathematical opposite of exponent is log. For 15 stops you will have values as high as 2^15. The relative difference between 1 and 2 is same as 1 million and 2 million, however you have much more accuracy between higher values i.e. you go from 1 to 2 in a single step but it takes million steps from 1 million. So why should highlights get more accuracy than shadows? Log evens this resolution issue out.

But after watching this video, I thought I could continue working with a fuji camera. AF's lack and focus problems always follow, but anyway, I should improve my skills without blaming the equipment. Thank you for the video💥
Great video. I'm looking forward to your video on the GFx camera not that I can afford it . Just looking forward to seeing how it works for film making. Also I really really hope we get an update to the xh2s and the xs20 that adds touch to track in video . I also hope they finally add the red record box to the xh2s. I don't understand why it's not there already. Would be cool if they gave us more control over the iso in f log 2 and even 1. I understand why they have it set that way but it's weird how we can adjust any size of data rate for shooting videos in most cases . It's not limited and set more strict like it is in say a sony camera is when you choose different codecs. If that makes sense . What I'm trying to say is why give us training wheels in one case and wide open choices the next ? I have no issues with it suggesting the iso but, why lock us in ?
I'm not sure if I'm following you on the second part about more control over flog 2 and 1. what else would you need? Pro Res has fix data bit rates, h.264/5 has variety of bit rate options in camera. But with pro res you have 3 data rich options, LT, 422, and HQ.
@@CineDailiesdidn't mean to confuse. While I do know there are no options to adjust bit rates in pro res . That's part of what I'm saying. If you choose h.265 or 4 the rates are adjustable while on my Sony they are not as flexible. I just wished they allowed us to have more flexibility when it came to shooting in f log 1 or 2. Give us more options when it comes to iso like they do with the data rates. Especially on cameras that do not have a clean image at those ISOs like the X-S20.
What tf is BM even doing. Flog2 has been out for like 20 months now. This is ridiculous. I had no idea flog2 was not available in the CST and colour management menus
Why did Evan put X-T5 over the X-H2? It's literally the same sensor but with worse video specs which is a strange decision when choosing a camera specifically for video.

There is only one absolutely scientifically accurate proven multiple times undeniable true reason to buy the XH2S over the XH2 for video. ONLY if you primarily shoot 75% of your footage 4k60 in lowlight. That is the ONLY place the XH2S truly outshines the XH2. Other than that, no reason to spend those 500 extra $. No serious filmmaker will need 4k120 for more than a few seconds no serious filmmaker will pan so wildly that Rolling Shutter will be an issue. Enough of this nonsense about the XH2S being vastly superior to its younger brother. It's not! It is better by only one major reason and two minor ones...

It's suprising you didn't touch HLG yet. Even X-T3 has that, better than log.
I don't use HLG
I got that, but why not? It's not only for HDR video.
It's not! It is better by only one major reason and two minor ones...
i don't like it.
Happy February!
