The nice thing about shopping at Costco is that if those shovels ever break, you can return them. Lots of Alaskans buy their generators from there for that reason. Lifetime return no questions asked.
My parents would go grocery shopping every six months. My dad was a Mennonite and my mom was English. we raised our own food and we had a big mennonite farm and farm animals. We milk our cows and goats and we had chicken and turkey and duck for fresh laying eggs and we had 2 acres for a large garden we grew our own fresh fruit and vegetables. We made our only butter and cheese and yogurt and ice cream my dad and five brothers would go hunting when hunting season open me and my three sisters and our mom would go start picking fresh fruit and vegetables from the large garden and we would start peeling and cutting up the fresh fruit and vegetables and we would be canning up the fresh fruit and vegetables and we would put some in the freezer to last all winter. We would plant in the spring and we would plant the fall fresh fruit and vegetables so we can have for canning.
Most people wouldn't survive on their own. We grow our own vegetables, have blueberry bushes and fruit trees. We also have a lake for fish and plenty of ducks that lay eggs. We also have free range chickens. We trade a farmer every year for a side of beef in exchange for our fresh sand we quarry as a business. The only thing we buy is milk and cheese from the dairy two miles from our house. America needs to learn how to use whatever area large or small to garden and plant fruit trees, learn how to can. Something needs to change with our attitude and culture towards food.
I was completely floored when you were mixing the vodka with the vanilla beans. I had to go to my wife to get it explained. Great way to make vanilla flavoring. Thanks big time for sharing your experiences.
I am experimenting with using rum to in my vanilla making. Not as dark as my vanilla made with vodka but good favor. Gives a different flavor when baking.
Shopping with baby at this age is the best moment ! I just went to Costco today to shop with my family and my baby was sitting like this , I love this moment so much , and I realize time fly so fast that my older boy is just walking and hold hand instead !
I just found videos about huge hauls at Costco, Azure & Walmart in Alaska...OMG! I can't imagine...BUT the baby really made me so happy. My "baby" just turned 51 & no grandchildren.. I will subscribe & watch your homestead & angel grow. I am in south Georgia so your scenery is awesome also. Wish you & yours all the best~
don't forget to be happy and grateful for all your blessings, you have a beautiful family, home, future. Don't let the stress ruin the moments you want as memories 20 yrs from now.
Just a quick suggestion. I have been making vanilla, coconut, coffee extracts for years. I found that cutting the vanilla beans in half lengthwise makes the vanilla stronger and darker. Plus, you can reuse the beans over 2-3 times just add vodka. And never drain the bottle leave about 1-2 inches in the vodka bottle. Good luck this winter.
Now with vanilla beans off old bottle when done you can take the beans and cut them open and get beans out and add it to sugar and let set for awhile and it will change your baking
Howdy guys! Just joined you for your live. 🤘 Now a new vid. 👏 Also, i'm not sure if you know this, general rule when it comes to frigerators and freezers. If you lay them down on their side, they have to be in the upright position for the same time as it layed down before firing it up.
Baby Rowan is adorable, first and foremost. Your haul was huge, the freezer being such a great purchase for you. As for your vanilla-vodka…..my jars are 4 years old now. I use a lot of vanilla but still, I haven’t even used 1/2 of it yet! Take care! Great video.
Great job at Costco, I know you still don’t have water but you’re looking a lot better this you than last. You’ve done a great job so far getting prepared for winter. Rowen is adorable, such a happy baby. Sorry. I missed your live today, I did just watch it. Great channel, always look forward to the next one. Thanks for letting us into your lives.
I would’ve waited until the Coco and the chocolate chips were totally empty from the jar. That way you use the older stuff first if you keep topping it off the older stuff never gets used.
Hello, I'm from North Central Iowa and I was blessed enough by God to be able to do 80% of my winter stock up this month and will finish it the beginning of November. I also was able to restock my emergency items in my pantry. One thing that I'm getting next month that is not on my stock up list is going to buy powdered milk, Hershey's Coco, sugar. Iam going to make 2 big coffee cans full of homemade hot chocolate as Christmas gifts.
babies are so cute at that age when they are trying to find their voice. I can remember my 4 and I miss it so much. I lived in Alaska for 7 years back in 85 when I was stationed at Elmondorf AFB. I am retired now, but loved the Summers in Alaska.
I have the same freezer and love it! You will be surprised how much you will be able to fit in it. Not a bad haul for 6 months. Consider hitting the Costco business center to pick up bulk tomatoes to can.

I came across Becca & Levi’s Alaska channel somehow and they mentioned your family so I came here and subscribed to your channel and turned notifications on. God bless you all.
High quality vanilla beans and the cheapest vanilla make awesome vanilla extract. Put it in a cool dark place and leave it be for a while. The longer you leave it the better. My sister makes it for the whole family.

I you have a dehydrator, then you can dry the vanilla pod once you are done with them. Grind them up an you have vanilla powder. Great in dry-mixes or mixed into sugar for vanilla sugar. I don't know if vanilla sugar is a thing in the states but it is here in Europe (or at least Scandinavia).
Rowan is growing into a cute girl! and getting more and more vocal! Costco is a nice store to do family shopping, on not more than a monthly basis. The store is too large for me. We had seven children and used only cloth diapers. Yes, the washing machine did have to work on a steady basis. Times have changed, drastically!
thank you for sharing your shopping trip . To be honest , I did enjoy it . Your coming into winter and Australia is coming into summer . It's between 35 and 40c at the moment and summer starts on the 1st Dec , so we are going to boil this year .
This is truly eye-opening. I can't believe that these products are cheaper in Alaska than in the cities of Canada. There is incredible differentiation between Costco's from country to country. Did you know that on a trip to Britain I learned; that you have to be a Lord; Doctor; Barrister; Governmnet or emergency Service worker; etc. to even get a membership at Costco? I never can figure out how these huge corporations justify such huge differences. That shopping excursion would have cost triple at a Canadian Costco!
Not sure if you know about this or not but there's a program in Alaska where you can get moose, caribou,etc.. it's run by Alaska Department of Public Safety (DPS), it's called the Roadkill Program.. if someone hits game and your on the list they'll call you to go get the meat so it doesn't go to waste.. it's a good alternative for people who don't hunt but want meat or werent successful on their hunt 🙂.. i have the same freezer and use it for berries and veggies.. i tried using it for meat but noticed it was too heavy for the drawers.. overall though, its a great freezer and way easier to use than a deep freezer.

Ugh, this has happened 2 times to us. The alarm should be an automatic add on for a freezer
