Harley Benton GPA 100 - Too Good to be True?

- For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... The Harley Benton GPA 100. I bought this to use between my Kemper and Kemper Kabinet, as in theory the 190 watts into 4 ohms should be plenty loud for most situations. So it might be a good candidate to try with your modeller? Maybe.

Basically, other options might be a Seymour Duncan Power Stage, or an Orange Pedal Baby, but they're quite a bit more expensive...

I gigged it once in the latter scenario as you described. I had it about less than half way up, into 1x12 open back cabinet and it was more than enough. We played outside.
Was that with the modeller going out the FOH too then?
It may be that that band/drummer were ridiculously loud ...I'll have to give it another try because playing it in my room here, it's stupidly loud?
Actually, I just had it miced - I was using my Stomp - and used all 8 blocks, no IR
@@johnnathancordy 100w (if it is 100w) should be generally loud enough for anything, unless you try to put out a bunch of lows.
These units are good, but if you read the description on the Thomann website, it states that you need a preamp…… if you don’t use it with a preamp, it’s too quiet, you tend to get a lot more volume, when using a preamp…. For example a budget - joyo American sound
The manual for this unit states that the peak light is illuminated if the INPUT signal is too high. Although, I'm not sure if you were referring to the circuit protection light included with the power light, when referring to peaking.
this is very misleading based on what most people say so you're probably right i'm not watching the rest of this
Volume-wise, it would also depend on the sensitivity of the speaker(s).
Definitely. The kemper kone is a 4ohm so in theory it should be as loud as the thing gets but I wonder how that would compare to an 8 Ohm EVM for example?
@@johnnathancordy it's also amp efficiency but i heard it's as loud as a mesa roadster
I would be worried about the fact it's class D. I'd be worried about the sound being harsh and brittle.
Video/set-up look great, John! (composition/lighting etc.)
"Here's a dog...." Brilliant!!
Fantastic playing! Buttery smooth! 🙌
I bought years ago an Eminence Wizard, which has 103dB sensitivity, and replaced the speaker on my 112. I've been using 20 Watts amps on stage ever since, and that's pretty much all I need
Awesome review, didn't know they were making these before the first you did about it. Also thanks for the affiliate link !
took it to a rehearsal and had it on max into an orange 2x12 16 ohm cab it wasn't quite loud enough on max. shame because i really liked the sound i was getting. i'd be nervous of only having this at a gig.
Yeah 16ohm isn't gonna pull a lot of watts from this, with a 4ohm cab you'd be getting masses more volume!
Swap a couple of wires and you are sorted.
Dunno the rest of you, but I reckon this Cordy guy could play a piece of burnt toast and make it sound good.
I heartily agree...I've said John Nathan could make a potato sound siick. The Thing is Alex Bourne, just keeping practicing /playing and with the confidence/experience I hope we all could attain the ability to play through 'whatever' and kick-ass \m/
With butter on !? 🤔🤔🤔🤔
@@iresentdoingthis1550 this is why god invented delay and reverb
Eric Johnson style!
"Four sausages up" - nice!
I use it with my Fm3 output at +4dBu. The peak does not turns on and the volume is perfect.
I have the GPA-400 I pair with my Helix and Friedman cab. This setup blows me away. In a lot of ways I prefer it to my real amps.
Single rack ? Mmmm double the price 🤔
same. Strymons and an Iridium to GPA-400 to 2 x 212. bliss.
Cameron! Don't worry so much about your dad's car!
Great video! Apart from the price, is there much difference in sound quality with the Seymour Duncan 170?
Hi John! Do you recomend it over the Ritter Camplifier Studio for a home use with the Kemper? The Ritter is a high quality piece of gear but is 25w ( good for a bedroom use) at double the price of the Harley Benton which is 100w!
What is the speaker resistance of the cabinet used on your gig? Thanks
Bought a blackstar id core tvp 100 head amp on eBay for £100. Cheap amps going down these days.
hello John how exactly did you connect the Harley Benton GPA100 to the Helix? i am new in this field. I have the Helix Floor and bought the GPA 100 today. I just don't know where to put the cable in.
Pleas help me 🙏❤
John. I intend to use this for home use with my powered Kemper. I want to run stereo. One can is a Mesa Boogie 2x12 but unfortunately atm the other is a Mesa Boogie 1 x 12. 8 ohms compatible. As the Kemper is mono powered then I hope this is the solution. Power the second cab? Or am I dreaming?
Is this compatible in 8ohm 200watts guitar speaker cabinet??
4x12 speaker cab
@johnnathancordy I definitely liked what I heard. I am waiting on delivery of a GPA 100 and the eq was a factor in opting to buy/try it over something like, say, an Electro-Harmonix 44 Magnum. What setup were you using to capture the audio in your video? It did a great job dealing with the volume you were cranking out, staying clear and clean. Thanks for the vid - subbed!
So what would the use be for an amp like this?
@@boimesa8190 If you want to send the headphone out from the Spark 40 amp to a cabinet (I send mine to a Hughes & Kettner 1 x 12) for a more room filling sound (and I love the sound of that speaker!) The GPA 100 has a ton of headroom. Make sure you get the correct cable to go between the Spark and the cab. You don’t want to fry your headphone out jack. Since I’m in the US, I also plug the GPA 100 into a Pyle PVTC120U step up & down Transformer.
A year later what are your thoughts on it? Is it loud enough to gig with?
@@endlessnameless01 I'm still happy with it but as I said, it was a "not every gig" kind of use case for me. Definitely loud enough. FYI - the box does get hot and if you aren't sure of your local venue's electrical wiring, er, soundness, I recommend placing it flat on the floor and preferably not near old carpet or drapes. I've never had a problem, but your mileage may vary. Cheers!
@@James_Gilchrist thanks for the reply. Good to know.
Did you maybe just use it wrong? You mentioned bass amps so it seems you are familiar with Bass. If you are a Bassplayer that would solve this puzzle.
Even 30W amps are loud enough to match a drummer and this should be almost double the volume. I dont know the Kemper Cabs I would never buy toys like this. Get 2 good speakers and 2 sheets of OSB and build a proper 2x12 or buy a 2x12.
One las possibility, does your drummer play ar15s and jet aircrafts?
I got this for home studio use...
How's the typical hiss or noise you get from those? Probably not gig noticeable but is it during practice at reasonable volumes? Just curious
Didn't get any hiss or noise!
@@johnnathancordy that's actually very nice most of the cheaper d class have a lot of it
Hi, I read on the description the output 100w at 8 ohm. Can this be used with a 16 ohm cabinet? the power output at 16 ohm will be 50w so...
More Ohms...less Power.....! I suggest 8ohms ! This Unit is better with a 212 cab
four ohms is 190w idk why not 200w
Is it normal that when i plug only guitar straight into gpa, without preamp or modeler, it sounds really quiet? Or is it fucked?
Yeh you need to be sending line level signal into it I think?
@@johnnathancordy oh, ok thanks!
Does it run hot to touch ! Thinking of puttin one in a 1 x 12 FRFR
It gets warm but never hot. I have it on a cab for rehearsal all the time
awesome sausage, please make it a regular guest
Lol she is Fenton's auntie
Nice licks. Very tasty playing
YT must have erased my previous comment. I am curious about the 300B and 800b units from Harley Benton. Using the Aux in, moreso than the input and onboard eq controls.
Did it have a link in it? That sometimes kicks stuff into spam limbo...
I've not tried any other Harley Benton poweramp, so not sure I can answer to be honest!
@@johnnathancordy It did. My fault. You can order them in the US but I haven't gotten excited enough about it to pull the trigger just yet.
@@TrumpetsInMy4x12 some of the other chaps have said that the Harley Benton stuff needs an adapter to work in the US?
@@johnnathancordy that will be another potential hurdle in my purchase if that is the case :)
@@TrumpetsInMy4x12 have a little look around, I've definitely seen that mentioned on the forums I think
Yeh RMS 100w real life 50watts I would Imagine.
Had it. Thought it was awful. Wet blanket syndrom.
Interesting - what was your set up?
@@johnnathancordy I was using it with an HX Stomp and a 2x12 cab. I tried the SD Powerstage and a few other things, and the HB sounded really muffled compared to the others.
@@matt.lemonnier interesting!!
What IR were you using there? The cleans were really nice.
I was hoping to buy the Harley-Benton Thunder 99 Stereo 50/50 watt power amp but they’re only available through Thomann and would cost a lot to ship to the U.S.A.
Is the IR supposed to be on or off? Do you have it on??
If you go through a cab you'd normally turn it off. But since class-D poweramps often don't color the sound much, you can try it with the IR. It will mean that you have a nother voicing or frequency curve going through the signal in front of the actual cab
@@danielbarth I´ve been using the amp sim but yesterday I tried the preamp version of the amp with no IR and I felt it sounded better than before. I´ll give a try with the IR on.
@@Ricardo_Rosa yeah I usually turn them off when playing through poweramps and cabs
@@danielbarth Last rehearsal I went for the preamp with no IR and I might keep it that way since I could finally hear myself in the mix. Another crucial change I did was the output.
I had no idea that changing the last block in the chain, which is the output, from MULTI to 1/4 would make such a huge change in the sound. I find the MULTI output to be way too hot. It saturates everything other than clean tones.
Can you use this for bass?
Same question too. But i guess you could considering that it is the same set-up as trace elliot elf or the warwick gnome (at a cheap price)
You still using this Johnny boy ?
It's funny how you talked about it 'flubbing out' at high volume and losing the headroom as this has been my experience of some SS/Modeller stuff too. I used run my HX Stomp into an SD Power Stage direct into a 4x12 on stage and it didn't struggle in terms of pure volume, pure there was this 'distortion' on top of my distortion, which kinda sounded like the speakers crapping out. Defo feel like tube headroom is different to SS headroom somehow.
The tube/SS watts being different is both untrue and true. The reality is they are the same, but also we are rarely given a like for like wattage measurement. It's all down to effectively clean non distorted wattage. Your tube amp by the time it is overdriving is putting out more than the stated wattage, whereas a solid state amp you don't want it to overdrive at all
Has nothing to do with SS or Tube.
GPA100 is Class D and the power supply is integrated which is even smaller than the power supplies that come with the EHX Magnum for example and its 100W rating has to be taken with a grain of salt, really. Main problem is that everything has to be small and lightweight nowadays.
But yeah, that's the reason why it's flubbing out.
@@Bushprowler have you got a recommendation amongst the options that are out there at the moment?
@@Bushprowler The way to evaluate a power supply is to measure its current under load: you can’t just judge by its physical size alone.
Tube/SS watts is very relevant because the rated power is a hard limit for SS amps, at which you hit horrible square-wave artefacts or circuit protection, whereas for tube amps it's the point at which they go over a cliff into ever more compression & distortion, but the compression & distortion does not sound unmusical or ugly and you do tend to get power output somewhat beyond the rated power.
In practical terms, your SS headroom for brief occasional transients needs to be accommodated within the rated power, whereas a tube amp will tend to sound fine if occasional transients exceed its rated power: they don’t have more *clean* headroom than SS by any means, but they do have more usable headroom.
Most guitar tube amps don't reproduce the power they're rated at. 100W amps for example are more in the 60W to 70W range when they're actually measured. Mesa Boogie's Simul-Class amps can't exceed 65W, a Dual Rectifier is about 68W and so on. Rare exception would be a manufacturer like Fryette where 100W actually means 100W. Still, the discussion about tube vs. SS watts is irrelevant, especially when a 100-200W SS amp craps out at relatively low volumes (without your ears bleeding) in standard tuning frequency range the problem isn't that it's SS and you also can't cheat physics. In this as well as many other cases small size is a limitation and this is of course measurable. Some things will never fit in the palm of your hand because we're already scraping the bottom of the barrel of what's possible.

Thankyou for your service
@@johnnathancordy no need to thank me, I’m just glad to get away from my son, Pete, for the day.
If it can't keep up with a loud drummer than the 100W it boasts cannot possibly be RMS Watts. Which in turn means that Thomann are trying to trick their customers.
Harley 400w I think would do better
