Thanks! I have a new book coming out next year that explains my story. But the short version is I did everything the hard way! That's why I relate to people who struggle singing!

Hello Mr.Baxter. I’m 50 yrs old and had my thyroid surgery 2 yrs ago. My doctor needed to remove both of it cause of the cancer. After this operation, it affected my singing. Can’t reach high notes, sometimes catching up my breath while singing. I went to a voice therapy but it didn’t not help me. Singing is one of my passion and would love to hear from you on what can I do to bring my singing back. Thank you and hoping to hear from you🙏🏻

I hope the doctor explained to you before the procedure that a major nerve that feeds the vocal folds sits beneath the thyroid. This nerve is often disturbed when removing the gland. Of course cancer must be dealt with aggressively, but injury to the nerve means the vocal folds are restricted in their movement - particularly stretching for range. Your path forward at this point is to utilize the voice (range) you have now - rather then the range pre-procedure.

Hello Mr. Baxter, I have a question. I used to sing when I was young. But when I was eigtheen, I developed severe GERD (reflux disease) and esophagitis. My voice started to degrade and I eventually stopped singing. Nothing much was revealed in tests and I accepted throat pain while talking loudly or occassionally singing to be a part of my life. I am 30 now. Absolutely cannot sing without pain or cracks, have developed an unpleasant hoarseness over the last ten years and I want to recover. Is it possible? When I don't speak for long, or drink warm or hot tea, I still get my old voice and power to sing back for a few minutes but I cannot retain it. Please suggest something. Sorry to bother you with such a long comment.

That you have moments of clear and pain free singing means it is possible for longer periods of time. Unfortunately - you have developed a habit of over compensating when singing and speaking loudly so getting rid of those behaviors is where you'll need to work. Start with what works. Simple sounds.

Voice Lesson.com thank you so much for replying! I have been planning on resting my voice as well. Even stopped taking classes where I had to use my voice too loudly with the students! I will follow your video for vocalising too if I recover from this damage :) Have a good day

Dear Mr Mark I have been recommended your channel out of a friend of mine.
I am Japanese and have no experience singing in front of people officially.
I have a passion anyway although there is a barrier singing in English in my case.

I understand how you feel! Many people face many barriers but passion has a way of seeing us through. Work through the videos here (especially the ones about mindset) and learn to trust that your passion is worth sharing.

Mind set rather than skills or methods?!?!?!
      That is impressive.
There is an evidence that my mind is closely with my speaking. By nature I am not good at speaking my mother tongue but when speaking English , I don’t fail to speak my lines very often.
I am comparing short words or phrases in Japanese with the same volumes in English.
