We locals HATE that tunnel. Outta towners approach it, slam on the brakes, timidly enter it, and slow to a crawl if not a dead stop as they exit. It backs traffic all the way to the Mississippi state line. All this could be avoided if theyd just keep it moving!
@@ciyfiy Then you need to go through it 2 dozen more times cause John Davis is 100 percent correct. That shit happens every single day. There's a reason they are trying to fund another bridge because of that issue alone. Everyone's average speed through that tunnel that isn't a local is about 45 miles an hour all locals 65 and above. I personally do 80 on the rare occasion the lane is clear its not like a cop will stop you. I promise you they won't. Been a local my whole life, never once saw someone pulled over for speeding on the bridge or the tunnel.
If You're a Local. You despise it if you have to travel it periodically..Looking forward to the day A high rise bridge is constructed (WITHOUT TOLLS) so that traffic can maintain major Highway safe speeds
Nice, you have it too.. In Norway, Europe, they have 21km (14-15 miles) long tunnel under sea as a part of Oslo Ringroad, since they can't build a bridge over it, because it would block the ship traffic.
The tunnel was fantastic years ago, but now traffic has increased greatly. There is a very sharp turn going in eastbound that slows traffic quiet a bit. 5 o'clock traffic is high, so is weekend- people traveling east-west. Holiday weekend- unbelievable. That's the only way across the river. The old tunnel is too tight, and most travelers don't know how to get to Cochran bridge- which is a nightmare anyway. Yep-a NEW bridge will definitely help.
I live here in Mobile just a few minutes away from this tunnel me and my kids play a game the second we go in we hit seek on the radio station and all of us make a bet on where the radio station is going to come back on because there's no signal and it scans through and through been doing it for years is the game me and my kids play
What's more amazing is to take a tour underneath the tunnel. There are large air shafts just as wide as the tunnel under each one. You can literally hear the traffic passing above your head. It is an amazing tour!
Years ago,{ late 60's), after going through the bankhead tunnel you would get on the causeway and have to cross an extremely narrow draw bridge. Things are much better now.
This was so amazing that even when I drove through it, I never forgot the experience. I had to recently look up where this was and what the name of the tunnel was. It’s easily one of the most interesting tunnels I have ever experienced! Great video!!
I live 20 minutes away from this tunnel and I know that the old tunnel was built on top of large Barges and sank to where it lays now. The new tunnel that's shown here was built much later on. I've been going through each tunnel before and I could hear large Ships going over me in the river. It freaked me out the first time I heard it. You can hear each piston firing as your going through the deepest part of the tunnel. You also loose all radio signals until you get about 50 feet from the exit. I've had to use the tunnels many times when an accident blocked the interstate .
Yep this one is the 'Wallace' tunnel I and the scary(the one sunk on barges) one you're talking about is the old "Bankhead" tunnel that also gave me nightmares as a kid.trust me...I remember the same ship noise too.. overhead driving underwater in that one and how claustrophobic the Bankhead was..which was a combo for some pretty scary stuff. This tunnel is buried much further down than just underwater, which is why all the radio signal drops out. The Wallace isn't actually "underwater" per se, but actually channels UNDER the entire riverbed itself underneath the Mud in the Mobile River. I'm from less than 8mins away, and grew up right off I-10 on D.I.P(aka "the Parkway") I always remembered the radio signal disappearing being the indicator that officially meant you were driving In the DEEP
" most amazing tunnel in the world " . Dude needs to get out of ALABAMA more. The Gotthard Base Tunnel is the world's longest, and deepest under water tunnel.
There are plenty of those underground tunnels where there are water above them in New England as well so it's not a worldly thing lol they're all over the country
I've drove that darn tunnel many times back and forth from Mobile to the Eastern shore I live in Grand Bay which is literally right there where the battleship is is probably about 28 miles I suspect but I got to tell you I hate it when the damn thing goes to the point where you can't even listen to your radio LOL too many times people don't know how to drive through our tunnel here in Mobile and I can tell you if you don't know the tunnel and how to drive it the Wallace tunnel can be your bad friend let me tell you that LOL
Take a look at that Left Wall, it's covered with scrape marks from idiots not following the many warnings to SLOW the FUCK DOWN and they hit the wall. I live in the area and travel the tunnel frequently. Hope one day it is replaced with a bridge.
No not the coolest and yes your phone works and no it's not that deep and no it's not a mile. Also people don't know how to keep moving they always slow slow down but why? And they don't clean as much as they use to :(
I lived in Mobile as a kid and we used to try to hold our breath from one end of the tunnel to the other.
Nostalgic
Ha i do that with my 2 kids now man time flies.
I still do that. 😂
funny my step mom and her brothers did that too
Great way to die because everyone drives 30 under the speed limit through there
We locals HATE that tunnel. Outta towners approach it, slam on the brakes, timidly enter it, and slow to a crawl if not a dead stop as they exit. It backs traffic all the way to the Mississippi state line. All this could be avoided if theyd just keep it moving!
i’ve been in that tunnel dozens of times and i’ve never seen someone do that in my life

Or build that damn bridge they been talking about for decades!
@@ciyfiy Same. I drive to the other side of the bay using that tunnel a lot and everyone always moves pretty well when I go through 🤷🏻♂️
Amen
Almost ten years ago
This shows up on my page 😂
Live here all my life dang tunnels gets old but it’s a fast trip
The George C. Wallace tunnel in Mobile, Alabama is a beautiful tunnel, always bright and never dark.
I drive through this tunnel twice a day to and from work. Thanks for the video!
If You're a Local. You despise it if you have to travel it periodically..Looking forward to the day A high rise bridge is constructed (WITHOUT TOLLS) so that traffic can maintain major Highway safe speeds
Ears popping lol, lived there my whole life been through that tunnel 2k times…never had my ears pop 😂😂
Locals ears dont pop cause we used to it
Wys🤣🤣🤣
@@alaina07moore ummm, definitely under the Mobile River.

I live in Alabama and have been through that tunnel a few times it's quite a ride I always have an uneasy feeling going through it
Sa.e kind of tunnel in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Kind of exciting.

Yes definitely try the bankhead tunnel you learn to appreciate the Wallace tunnel
Dats nuffin, you need to try the bridge tunnel south Chesapeake river, it leaks about halfway thru at a gap. with lanes really NARROW.
Years ago,{ late 60's), after going through the bankhead tunnel you would get on the causeway and have to cross an extremely narrow draw bridge. Things are much better now.
The Bridge by the old Scott Paper Company now called The Africatown Bridge after the last Documented Slaveship to America
@@teelabo1269 Sorry, I meant eastbound to Florida. Much smaller bridge than the old Cochrane, now Africatown bridge.
that would have been the tensew river bridge, was replaced years ago.

I also live in Mobile. This tunnel is also at 110% capacity of what it was built for.
Been through it a dozen times on the way to Gulf Shores
I live north of Birmingham and I’ve been through this several times
Crazy to see what others say about it but me living in mobile crossing the bay every day I'm just tired of people slowing down so badly in it
I live in mobile and I had to ride thru that tunnel for work for 6 years. I remember as kids trying to hold our breath till we got thru the end🥰🤣
The Bankhead tunnel right next to it is the sketchy one fo sho
Man you didn't hit your horn dude or drop it in neutral and gas tap it. Welcome to MOB TOWN.
Lived here my whole life basically. Hate going through the tunnel because it is constantly backed up with out of town folks that stop in it.
Well if ya think that's amazing....dont go to Virginia because they have some long ones and it might shock you....😒
I use to be afraid of tunnels but now that I know most tunnels go under water it's pretty cool now going through tbem!
I use to hate riding through the Holland Tunnel in New York.
Wow never heard of an underground tunnel
" most amazing tunnel in the world " . Dude needs to get out of ALABAMA more. The Gotthard Base Tunnel is the world's longest, and deepest under water tunnel.
Don't forget the people that like to slam on their horns!
There are plenty of those underground tunnels where there are water above them in New England as well so it's not a worldly thing lol they're all over the country
Still ride this tunnel!! AND I BLOW the Hell out of my horn, Everytime!
I miss this tunnel
I hold my breath when I go through there.

I did once.
Bankhead tunnel. Named after Tulullah Bankhead, actress.
Actually this is the larger George Wallace tunnel.
The Bankhead tunnel is nowhere near this nice. And it was scary ASF
I used to try to hold my breath till the end of the tunnel too!
