I was born in 1957 at the old Providence Hospital in Mobile, Al. We moved across the bay to Foley, Al. In 1962. My dad worked at International Paper Co. from the time WWII ended until the early 70s. Yes, I remember all of this. The old Cochrane Bridge being raised to let boats through. Bankhead Tunnel that you had to pay a toll to go through. And the old causway. My grandpa had a small summer house at mullet point. And I remember going with my dad and grandpa while they threw their cast nets catching mullet and go gigging for flounder at night. And the jubilees that would come into the bay. Back then the bay was blue and clear as glass. Now it looks like a giant mud hole with oil and gas rigs everywhere. 😢 God how I miss those days so much. But I know it will never be the same again. 😢
As a Fairhope resident, I thank you for an insight into to the local history and and what I would give for a ferry to avoid the mess that is Daphne and the bridge and tunnel!
Great video! My great grandfather William Armbrecht Sr. gave the dedication speech for the Cochrane Bridge when the toll was removed in 1938. I have a copy of the speech.
