  • 0:00 = 0.09 Strings - changing to Darco 10-46 Strings -
2:39 = same amp setting - everything the same but 10s!
4:36 = Guitar with 0.09s Strings / Backing Track + Okko Diablo Overdr.
7:05 = same track, same setting, + Okko Diablo Overdr. - but 0.10s
I always tell my customers what piece of shit 0.09 strings are - some people do not believe - and yesterday - again - I 've got a guitar with these crappy strings. I tried to make a video - and started as you can see in the beginning - the guitar was sounding like SHIT - it makes "PLAK PLAK PLAK" if you pick a note a bit harder - no tone... thin and awful. I decided to change the strings live in front of the camera to 0.10s and show the difference. I think even on you tube it is clearly to hear what the difference is... ok, I have to say that later on, with the use of the overdrive pedal, the difference is not that drastic - but you can still feel it when playing.
guitar: 2001 Fender Strat Dlx with noiseless Pickups (just random choice, because the guitar came like this...)

I'm a Darco strings user ever since i was asked to 'Try them out' by our local Music store, waaay back when they 1st came on the market. I never used another brand ever since. Although they have a Twang to 'em which i personally really Like. They keep sounding 'Fresh' a lot longer compaired to "Well Known Brands". Only You should have started with first tuning your guitar after changing the strings and before playing Hahaha

Very interesting, I always use 10s . What’s your choice Gregg , and how do you get that beautiful sound?

Great blues playing. I have been trying to figure out how to do blues phasing like that.

Have used 9.5 lights w/decent results on longer scale necks. Kind of a compromise w/9's & 10s. Everything is relative. Strings, technique, electronics, amp, effects, etc.

It is possible to buy a combination of both: top (E.A.D) from the 0.10 set and for easy stretching below (G.b.e) from the 0.9 set

Yes if you buy 9-46 set. I recommend to try also 10-42 set, i think it's better balanced than 9-46 but you need to buy 9-42 and 10-46 sets both for that mix, or buy each strings separately. With 10-42 set those thinner strings (g,b,e) are not too thin and gonna last maybe longer than 9 size.
10-46 set is great for Fender strat cause it sounds a little bigger than 9- set, so not that thin than 9 set.

Thank you for this! I love a good a/b test like this. Difference was very clear to me too, seemed more so with a pick than fingers. I think you managed to coax out more thickness with the fingers and compensate for the 9s thinness.
I did some A/Bing with .11s and .10s and the feel and the difference was every more pronounced than between 9s and 10s. Though I did miss some of the cut of the 10s on the upper strings. The 11s were too thick for what I was used to going for.

I lean towards 9 but in this video the 10's just opened up the sound a lot

In my opinion...On Strat for clean no doubt 050-011: for Overdrive and pushed amp 042-010...009 or 008 just for Metal ...could be the perfection 052-010: I need to try it

Great exercise, and yes, even through crappy laptop speakers the 10s are a big improvement.
Next we go for the 11s! Then full Robin Trower mode.

Now that's what I call a clear statement!
If you think about it, it's quite logical - the thinner the strings, the less they stimulate the instrument to sound, and the more only the oscillation of the string is transmitted (also, a thinner string will produce, due to its relatively less stiffness, more own oscillation). Some people might like that, but the character of a (good) instrument is definitely pushed into the background

Absolutely true - I've not heard anyone get a great tone out of 9's with single coil pickups on a Stratocaster.

The 09s were better for this music. More blues in them, the 10s lose some of the flavour and sound more samey.

I find you really have to change technique and also how your tone is set on amp, etc. I usually use 10s, but have experimented with 9 and 9.5 sets. It all depends! I also went back to a lighter medium pick. Lighter strings require a lighter touch or it kind of chokes out the dynamics.

One important aspect of Yngwies playing is he uses a good amount of overdrive, reverb and delay which masks some of the characteristics of thin strings
