  • Join me, John, as I look at the impact that a change in string gauge has on my tone, my technique, and my hands. Both sets are D'Addario XL. Tones were preset in a Boss Katana so things will be as scientific as possible, within reason. Let me know what you heard in the comments section below.

Played 10's on all electrics most of my life, tried 11's and 9's even more often, switched to 9's recently honestly because the Beato and Rett Schull videos on the subject got me thinking, the verdict is not out yet but I dig em. Easier to bend, just set your axe up right. Some of my faves like Jimi and Prince used lighter gauge, and then Billy Gibbons. Good vid.

I just moved from 9’s to 10’s. The difference in sound is incredible. Going to stick with 10’s for now.

I've used different gauges in the past but when I found 11-54, they were awesome. Now I use 10's but with the heavy bass end, I just love the hybrid gauges for me 😀🤘🎵🔥🔥🔥

    I’ve tried 13s,12s,11s,10s and 9s
I like 10s on 24.75 inch scale length and 9s on 25.5 inch scale length electric guitars.
For slide, I like thicker like 11 or 12s.
It’s fun to try different gauges and mix gauges too.
    Hendrix mixed gauges-
    10, 13, 15, 26, 32, 38

I like the control I have over 9s. I actually don't own a 24.75 scale guitar right now. I almost ordered an Epiphone Junior with p90s the other day, but I got a Classic Vibe Strat instead.....

I’ve been playing 35+ years and have been through the entire string gage spectrum. I started with 8’s and over the years I went heavier all the way to 13’s because I liked SRV. The illusion I had for many years was that heavier strings had better “Tone” which proved to be false. Your “Tone” can be shaped by your amp and effects with an electric guitar. What string gage does affect is the Tension of the strings which affects how you attack your strings and also your playing technique as well. You won’t play fluid Legato runs on 13’s as easily as on 8’s (for example) and if you strum like a gorilla you’re going to break lighter strings easier and go out of tune more. People have to first come to grips with what kind of a technique and playing style they have in order to choose the proper string gage set for them. It’s all very personal so you shouldn’t pick strings because “so and so” plays them. Decide what works best for YOUR OWN PLAYING STYLE! Keep in mind too that the string tension is also effected by the scale length of your guitar as well so if you prefer less tension or have smaller hands then play a smaller scale guitar like a PRS (25”) or Gibson (24 3/4”) like I do. I played Fender scale guitars (25.5”) most of my life but wish now that I wouldn’t chosen a Gibson because the shorter scale works better for me! I couldn’t saved so much money If I knew then what I know now!

Seems like the 10s have a deeper darker sound and the 9s are lighter, but both sound good!

Not sure if I really said it in the video, but the difference is mostly because of my difference in attack, or the way I can get lighter strings to respond...

@@overdriveguitarchannel3403 Oh yeah bro you did mention the difference in attack, I was just noticing the change in sound on each as well. I just got new strings and have yet to change them out(I'm just getting over the initial finger pain). I appreciate your videos, they are really helpful! Keep plugging away, I am a new player and like getting perspective from different guitar players!
