I’ve been going to the beach every weekend for a month and couldn’t stand up. I watched this today and practiced it on my board and I stood uppp!!!!! Yayyyyy
Mate, I’m 61 and I had given up on trying to learn, I’m stiff and me breathing got hammered by 9/11 . I tried this and it works! Thanks mate. New boardies ordered, tan coming. Cheers!
Thanks for posting this for 40+ year old guys who are failing miserably trying to do the "pop up" meant for super fit sport stars. Please post some more clips similar to this.
Best video I have ever seen on standing up vs. popping up. I watched this video probably fifty times, and used it to learn to surf at age 50. FIFTY. And I'm not even in terribly good shape. After about a year surfing, I don't use my knee (much) anymore, but for getting started, especially if you don't have the powerful core and immense flexibility of youth, this technique is PERECT. Thank you!
Best "pop up" video ever...I believe this is the Australian method, but if so Nick has it refined to the point it should be called The Nick...outstanding.
Dudeeee I just finished taking my first surfing class, couldn't stand up for the life of me for the 2 hour class. I thought it was because I lacked proper upper body muscle. I came home, watched this video and this method feels way easier to stand for a beginner. Wish I had watched this first. I think most classes teach the usual popup methods but your video is a nice simplification for a beginner I feel. Thanks!
Love the one knee pop up!!! I'm 50+ year old and good shape but weaker upper body. Not extremely flexible and knee surgery makes is difficult for me to popup like most videos show you. So the one knee method looks great and I can do this. So thank you for making such a difficult thing look so easy.
Me too! exactly what I've stressed to other critical commentors on here. I'm disabled and this method could make it possible for me to get started. Its not like some of us have great aspirations. I just want to do some soul surfing and ride a longboard in some white wash, thats all my goal is. We are all different and and whatever work is what is best. Wishing you the best.
How are is your surfing coming along sir. I’m 59 and wanting to start surfing myself. Also with a knee surgery. Definitely going to give it my best shot without having to pay for lessons.
Thank you for this video!!! I watched tons of video tutorials on how to pop up, all of them with the jump up technique, or the other 2 steps technique - and I simply couldn't do any of them, and after a while it just became frustrating. After finding this video today was my 2nd surfing session with THIS technique - and I'm progressing much quicker then ever before! I feel more secure and balanced on the board, and today I already could stand up 2 times! for a few seconds only but at least I gained back my hope and confidence that I'll be able to do it! So for any woman out there who are not teenagers but over your 40's and/or maybe not in best health condition - I highly recommend to try this technique!
I'm 51. I had a kidney transplant last year. I'm not overweight but out of shape. I live in a land locked state. This video inspired me to learn how to surf.
Excellent video! I started surfing around 1973 while going to college near San Diego. I went out for a session while on vacation on Kauai last April. I felt like I was starting all over again. My timing was off. I had trouble trying to stand up after catching the wave. I wish I had watched this video before I paddled out. Zed did a great job explaining how to put it all togehter so that you're surfing on your first day out. Well done mate! Thank you for posting this.
This really helped me catch more waves down in N.Devon & Cornwall this summer. The hand placement for pushing up made it so much easier, I saw so many gripping the rails and struggling instead (which is what I used to do). Thank you.
Hi Mc Farreling,I'm an amazon clothing seller,I have some mens swim trunks for this summer,I'm looking for reviewer for my product,it's sponsored, are you interested in it?my email:siilkworld@gmail.com
yes smart arses, we know, we know, but you've got to break it down somehow and this video is the best way to show it. They gonna get the pop- up on their own, in their own time SURFS UP GREMMIES
When I started surfing I could catch the wave but could not stand up it took me a three or four days of falling off when trying to stand up but when I came across this video is started to take notes, I practiced it on the floor at my house and got the hang of it the next day I was surfing like a pro haha, thanks heaps man 👍
Thank you, Zed! I followed your tips and STOOD UP! :-D This is by far the most helpful video on standing up. It's also better than any of the personal instruction I've gotten so far, and I live in Surf City, U.S.A.!! Thanks again, man.
thank you Zed, excellent instructions for me, a total beginner! I just want to have fun, not to became a champion, and you gave me a simple and clear technique to enjoy waves!
Started surfing @ age 69 This method is working great for me. You can smooth it out and quicken pace with practice. Points made in this video are valid and true in my experience. ..
am 60 years old and am trying to get back to surfing after a bad work injury to my back and knee. There should be more videos of this type to help beginners and older surfers to stand up or those trying to come back from injuries. All power to Zed and many many thanks for the video. Unfortunately we are not all young anymore!!!!!!!
Hi Bob, Thanks for your comments... Maybe one day come down to Barbados and enjoy our waves down here. Hope to see you and keep surfing any chance you get.
0:30 Balancing the Board Line your nose up with the mark 0:45 Center your body Chest centered Hips centered Feet on the board and centered 1:14 Paddle Hands enter water turned outward Turn hands When elbow gets in the water push hard Look forward 2:55 Getting up Look where youre going Give two more strokes when you feel the tail lift up Hands by chest Arch Up Head up Back knee forward On fingertips Front foot flat Stand up on back foot Straight up 60-70 % weight on back foot Look where youre going Shoulder points to the nose of the board Feet flat on the board Knees bent
That's a great tip about bringing the back knee up first. Years ago, I was given a small board as a present (obviously not ideal for a beginner.) It's going to be so much harder to learn to pop straight up in one quick movement on a board like that. Hopefully, I can master getting up on a small board with this technique demonstrated here.
I tried to watch this video but the ads took too long so I didn’t get to watch it!! Great job UA-cam!!!! Ppl turn videos off so u can collect your ad money! Get real you pullers!!! Bad business!!💯💯💯💯💯
Thanks man, I’m about to start surfing to have some breaks from study. I’ve tried a few different pop up techniques on UA-cam (on the floor of my apartment) and this one definitely felt the smoothest. I have pretty long legs for my height (which is only 178cm) and found putting my knee instead of foot toward so much smoother when getting up
great lesson - been going to Costa Rica to surf. I am a long time skateboarder and thought I could jump into surfing with out any lessons. WRONG! It's totally different and your explanation was great. Better than my instructor in CR. thanks
This is great! Thanks! Even as a beginner, are there times when you need to be popping up more quickly, this vid seems like it would work with a bigger board, on a perfect beginner wave, what about smaller boards and potentially rougher waves or even slightly bigger waves? I will watch this over and over again though, thanks.
I'm 45, have some bad hips and a nerve problem in my left leg. Thought SUP was my only chance to get on a board, but i'm going to give this a try. Looks doable! Thanks very much!
I think you just showed me the reason I could never stand up on a surfboard... I was pulling my left leg forward first, which would have me end up with my right foot in front, and that would DEFINITELY not be a comfortable and natural position for me. Unbelievable! I'm a bit old now, but I hope to be able to try this before I die!! Thanks!!
I watched your video before my first surfing class & I was able to stand and ride the waves for a bit, compared to others. Looking forward to my next surfing session.
Thanks Nick for sharing a technique I hadn't considered....pop ups get harder as you get older and surf much less often. Watching a couple of videos here, I realised mine's complete rubbish!
thanks for this video .It has to be worth it to watch learning how to do surfing.I am from philippines and i live in an island of masbate . I love seeing the waves and i think surfing has a great calling for me to do this kind of activity on summer vacation
to answer your question without any other info, Yes... it would..but when your feet in the right position you put the right amount of weight onto your back foot that is needed to help you turn the board and then as the board completes the turn take the weight off the back foot and either step it forward or put your weight on the front foot to pick up speed. hope that helps your situation
Thank you from central Florida. I have always gripped the rails to stand up. Today my knee that goes in the front of the board has a big golfball welt right below the kneecap from all the times i apparently hit it on my board going to stand up position. I am going try this way especially using the fingers to be able to get more clearance so that when I bring my front leg forward my knee doesn’t knock on the board.
...About the arm paddling part, good idea to make some rubber wing like for each arm, like a rubber tube that slides on each arm, and has a bat like wing, (from elbow to wrist) this would help greatly in paddling faster, the wings are flexible, but hard enough to keep strong enough for paddling. Not big wings, but around 6 inches wide maybe, just a thought here. I wouldn't think it would interfere with the actual surfing its self.
I would say beach break or sand bars or steep waves you would have to move faster and pop to your feet but before they try waves like that, and if they dont have a choice stick in the white water until they get it wired... we have great waves here to teach on and we spoilt, alot of people cant push their own body weight repeatedly to pop up. so this works great for them.
I did some boogie boarding today and my nabor friend is planning for me to Hoffly learn to surf in the next 2 days at the end of August 😃 I think I can do this 😃 cause I did do well today in boogie boarding I catch a lot of big waves today 😃
i'm a beginner, mid 40's and 115kg/253lbs. i single knee pop as well and have become so proficient at it. i can do a clean pop up when on land but when angled downward on a wave and preparing for a pop up, i automatically revert to the single knee, which has been absolutely fine - leading to some quality waves. keeping in mind that i have a 9ft 6 board anyway and don't need to be riding massive waves. mid range are perfect for this beginner.
Me too. My land popup is good, but I don't trust it in water and keep my gravity lower and use the knee. I will try to avoid the knee whenever I get back to it.
I've been watching numerous beginner surfing tutorials and this one seems to be the most informative and concise, about to head out right now hopefully I'll be standing up by the end of the day
I’ve been going to the beach every weekend for a month and couldn’t stand up. I watched this today and practiced it on my board and I stood uppp!!!!! Yayyyyy

guys this is for total beginners. I.e who have never stood up before. Zed gets you up on the first/second wave. that's how good a teacher he is.
Best "pop up" video ever...I believe this is the Australian method, but if so Nick has it refined to the point it should be called The Nick...outstanding.
Cheers Steve, Just Zed in the video as I was sweating behind the camera in 30C - but no complaints!

Love these comments, I’m 40 and want to start learning, but have a bum knee. Definitely gonna try this method.
Best instructional video I've seen. I've actually taken lessons and not had as much detail in explaining how to swim, kneel, and stand. Thank you!

Thanks Brian for the kind words. This video seems to be useful for beginners young and old. If it helps then great.
Brian some people have an agenda and live to attack and discredit for some reason. We almost come from the same era. Lol
