  • BUTTERSLAX
Bill Kelliher (Mastodon) Signature 100-Watt Hand-Wired Head
Bill Kelliher’s guitar playing is rooted in metal, infused with rock 'n' roll, progressive rock and sprinkled with bits and pieces of thrash, punk, and psychedelic-ness. So, when it came time for Mastodon’s guitar player to design the ultimate amp to cover the complexity of his playing, Bill decided to team with long time friend and respected tone guru, Dave Friedman.
The result of this collaboration is the new Friedman Butterslax, a 100w, three channel beast powered by 4 x EL-34s with gain, more gain, extreme gain and some more gain to top it off. But “high-gain” is an over simplification of the Butterslax - what Dave andBill created is a super high gain, ultra tight amp that delivers deep, rich, low-end that will make your pants rattle. Yet, the Butterslax delivers detailed midrange and singing highs that capture every drop of each articulated note.
The Butterslax features three channels. Channel one with gain, master, bass, middle, and treble takes you from a versatile clean to a slightly overdrive tones and ending up at a sultry hard rock tone. Channel two, with the same controls takes you to where most “metal” amps leave off. The third, fire breathing channel, takes you 100 miles past the extreme , to gain heaven - or hell, deepening on your perspective.
The Butterslax features an ultra transparent effects loop, Baltic Birch construction, black tolex and checkered grille cloth. So if you’re looking for a clean amp to play, this is NOT your amp. But if you want a tone machine that measures on the Richter Scale, plug into the Butterslax and enjoy the ride.
The Butterslax is hand-wired in the U.S.A. using hand selected components. You can buy this amp with confidence because Friedman Amps are designed and built to last a lifetime. We guarantee it!

I bought a cheaper Gibson 70s Tribute and liked it better than the Studio and Standard right next to it at the shop. I also played the Halcyon Les Paul at Chicago Music Exchange and didn't care for that either lol

I actually love Gibson/Epiphone Les Pauls and this guitar feels more solid than them. And that's no exaggeration. I also like the volume pots they used, this thing cleans up gloriously. Everyone has a personal taste and this guitar that he made, is one of my favorites. If you have a chance give it a go!

Satyajeet Prabhu Tone coming from somebody's hands is bullshit. Get the same guitar, same amp, same settings, and strum a g chord. It will sound the fucking same. Play a Pentatonic scale, it will sound the same.

+Generic Name go onto Johan Segeborn's youtube channel and watch one of his les paul+marshall videos, then watch his video of him playing the epiphone 100$ starter pack amp and guitar combo. You'll see that its really the same tone because of his hands.

For those wondering why channel 1 has so much grit to it look at the video from NAMM 2016? Bill States he prefers an amp with some gain in the clean. When artists get a chance to design an amp with a company they design it around their preferred tone. I think it gives this amp some balls and a wide range of diversity to it.

These amps are amazing and have to be experienced to “get it”. I always was intrigued, but assumed they would be overrated in person. I decided to bite the bullet and buy a used “custom order” (has an added resonance knob and a 3 channel mod from the factory) JJ100 that popped up locally, and now I’m legit considering selling all my other amps for more Friedman amps. It’s that good.

The drummer is the best singer, have heard him nail it several times. Brent has the most interesting voice but the last few shows I noticed they just keep his vocals inaudible. The bass player takes on challenging signing lines but he just needs a bit more of formal training to pull off live what he does in the studio (which sounds great.) In all this, they're like the Rolling Stones, a bit loose but there's an unwieldy magic there.

I'd like to hear it being played by a guy with a more melodic and articulate style. This type of playing sort of makes everything sound the same

Mister Tee he's the one that designed the amp. I really don't think there's a more perfect way to demonstrate an amp than to have it played on the same music and player is was designed for and/or by

you see the settings? he had the gain at 6. It won't be clean with the gain that high

TheGearFiles in my mark IV you can set the gain up to 8 and still have a clean

Juan José Fonseca Godoy This is his signature amp he specificly asked for a 'clean' channels thats dirty... The other friedmans have a more traditional 'clean' channel, i believe the Steve Stevens one for example had a fendery voxish clean sound.

Thing that is upsetting is. ESP outsources to Korea, & you really get a cheapted out guitar. My point is this, with no misunderstandings to be had.
If I were to price out the build for both LTD, & ESP Signature models as above. $400 to $600 for the LTD I'm sure. ESP, $1000+ guaranteed.
Are we getting quality parts & components? Really? for the ESP model, absolutely.
LTD, totally cheaped out Korean build. The body is a sound platform, just remove the junk, which besides the pickups, everything else. Rebuild it, & do it with quality made parts this time.

Sţëvë Bëţţčhëř, this particular LTD is listed with basically the same locking tuners, bridge, and tailpiece that's in the E-II Eclipses. The E-II has Gotoh tuners and bridge, the LTD has LTD locking tuners and a Tonepros bridge. IMO The Tonepros bridge is top of the line. Even better than the Gotoh. The LTD tuners are no doubt made by Gotoh under a different name, so I'm not sure what you're on about. The World factory in Korea is becoming very reputable. Korea is the new Japan, and Japan is the new USA. I've played the BK-600 next to an E-II, and I preferred the BK for its full thickness body. It's a stupid heavy solid piece of mahogany, beautifully and solidly constructed. I'm of the opinion E-II and high end LTD are pretty much the same. Virtually no difference in sound or playability. Labor costs are much cheaper in Korea, but not so sure the quality of the labor is very different.

But you said it, Korea, Japan build shops. ESP has a build shop in California. There's also 2 Epiphone shops, China, USA. Crap cheap input jack, volume/tone pots, and there are times where the literal "neck thru body" is the only part worth a crap. Literally throw everything else away, rebuild with quality parts and you've a great guitar.

I can't believe the comments i'm reading below about this demo . Friedman make great amps there is no doubt about that but how this guy could get a signature amp in his name is astounding . He can barely play .Do you people not ever scan youtube for great guitar players ! There are hundreds of amazing players out there.....eg.....Guthrie govan , Ian Thornley ,Jeff Beck ,...Joe Bonamassa who will show you how a Friedman should sound......the mind boggles.............

      Bill can hardly play?
      Sod off.
Sure his play style might be different to the other guitarists you named, but Bill is as far as I'm aware a rhythm player so he's not all about solos or showing off.
Maybe you have to scan UA-cam to see more of his playing or listen to some of Mastodon's tracks and give them a full on listen.

you must be over 60 years old and geared more towards blues and slow rock with nice pretty predictable riffs that everyone has heard a million times, which is fine, but extremely boring. Everyone one of those guitarist you mentioned are great players....but I personally don't want their amp sound, way to sissy for my taste. Bill's riff's I find to be refreshing and his own personal expression, and I respect that even if you don't....I think your jealous that your too old to understand these young whippersnappers of today. lol

the amp sounds badass but it seems like a glorified marshall. For the money you could buy a jvm and a fairly badass guitar. Plus Mastodon haven't made a decent album since leviathan
