    I love the build out guys, almost like two different bikes. I've mulled over doing this to my surry but just not sure. I sort of like the low key MTB look of the stock version, you can get away with it in places where if you had larger, fatter tires and more aggressive power, you might stick out more and could "get into trouble". I have a 160cc, custom build light weight dirt bike that sort of fills the need of that modded surron. 90+kph, full CR85 suspension, can ride all day on one tank and it has a clutch and four gears so it actually requires some skill to ride :P

      Yeah main reason I even got interested in Sur Rons, I live in a suburb and can't go banging with a 450 dirtbike.. This would be very under the radar but still providing some fun! Do wish they made a upgraded sur ron version for a 1-2k more tho

    one reason I chose the 16" rear is for racing purposes. I race pitbike races and the maddog class restricts you to 19/16 max wheel sizes. Offroad 21/18 is always going to be the best for roll over and ground clearance though. If you want a bike that can still do good on trails(better traction) and race in smaller bike classes where the chassis and wheels match, the 19/16 is great option and you only need to upgrade one one wheel. Also there are getting to be some great tire choices for the 16" as there are a few gummies where just a year or so it was only 18" options so you can keep weight down and crazy good traction. Theres alot of factors in wheel sizes for sure

    I would agree about upgrading the sprocket to a bigger one on the stock one but I think 54-58 is the sweet spot for stock. With the testing I’ve done, the 64t is nice but not much more benefit for the loss in top speed the torque seems very similar between the 54-64t on stock

      Agreed, a 16/19 setup keeps the bike lighter and the steering is more nimble. Plus with the wheelbase on the surron being so short the 18-19/21 setup is not ideal on tighter more technical stuff. Now on the flip side the 18/22 setup is better at more wide open trails where your at higher speeds for longer durations and you can monster truck through rocky sections much easier. Just comes to preference 🤷🏻‍♂️

    As humans we have a tendency to want to modify everything yet with this bike many are missing the point - The X comes stock as a good all rounder and with a change of sprocket, a suspension tune and sorted tyre pressure it gets much better. I find it thrives on tight single track in that 20 - 40kph speed range as I can stand on the pegs and lift the front wheel whenever I need to. Yep, you can modify anything yet blowing dirtbike money on one of these things is probably going to see it slowly fall apart around the extra power and forces placed on it.

    I know very little about bikes in general, but I am interested in getting one. Question: Why would one acquire a 10K SurRon over a 13K Stark Varg. I guess you save 3K with the SurRon and it's marginally easier to get the SurRon in the back of a pick-up. However, I would guess that even though that Stark Varg is 30% more expensive, I would guess the that Stark performs 200 - 300 % better in many or most categories.

    • @emotobros
      @emotobros  2 роки тому +1

      Good question. The main answer comes down to rideability. Sure the Varg may be faster and quicker but applying that on the trails we like to ride is not easier on the bigger bike. In fact, on single track trails, we've always been faster on the SurRon than any other bike we've ridden. We know some people who've ridden the Varg and are still in agreement there.
      Granted we aren't pro riders, nor are we riding at a track which is what the varg is designed for. That extra 3k you save too is enough for potentially two more batteries getting your ride an additional 60 or so miles if you are out for a weekend.
      Again, the SurRon fills the very niche category of single track trail riding and it does it better than anything else we've tried (in its upgraded form). On anything else, the Varg would likely be the better choice.

      I believe the stark varg is closer to $12k stock. Main difference is that it doesn’t matter how much money you throw at the varg, it’ll never be 100lbs lighter. That’s the main appeal of the SurRon to us. If you watch interviews of 450 class riders, they all agree a 450 is too much. To ride something with even MORE power and torque is pretty ridiculous. It has its purpose though! I’d bet in almost all trail riding situations, I’d be faster on the SurRon than the varg.

    • @emotobros
      @emotobros  2 роки тому +1

      18kW peak…we are running 21kW peak 12kW nominal which both are higher than the KTM peak and nominal. Not to mention the weight, so not only are we running more power but we also have double the power to weight ratio.
      The batteries we run are 3.3kWh so proportionately smaller by weight and we’d probably get more range…
      Brakes on our bikes lock up front and rear with little to no effort so probably a wash there.
      I agree that it’s expensive, but I don’t agree that the KTM is objectively better. Situation dependent, it may even be worse.

    • @TBRambo2
      @TBRambo2 2 роки тому

      Thats the point, you can run 21kW on a Surron a few seconds until it overheats. The KTM never overheats and you can almost pull 18kW anytime. The Range is definetly worse than the surron with a 3.3kWh battery. You know the difference between the suspension of a heavier mx bike compared to your surron. It is necessary for thes heavy unsprung weight of wheels that the dampened weight ist at minimum 100kg for smooth consistent grip (you know the maths). If you believe that much in this surron motor, then prove it to all how long it holds at 12 to 21kW.

    • @emotobros
      @emotobros  2 роки тому +2

      That’s why I said different uses. There is no reason to buy a surron if you’re looking to hold it wide open at 21kW. You could watch every one of our videos and find that there is no situation on any trail we’ve ridden where that could even be done or would be useful. Off road trail bikes use power in short bursts mostly.
      Sure the suspension is better but again, different uses. We’ve hit some gnarly shit on these and never felt like if we had better suspension we could do more.

    Wish you guys would talk about the durability improvements gained by your modifications. I used to have a Sur-Ron, but sold because I felt the stock bike was not up to the punishment I would subject it to, and so chose to sell the bike while it was still in good condition. To me, the extra money to improve the suspension, power, etc. isn't worth it if the bike isn't capable of holding up to the type of riding you're doing. I was hoping the Sur-Ron could be ridden like a dirtbike, but it's not (at least not in stock form) capable of holding up to the type of jumping and other hard riding that dirtbikes are made for. Even with better suspension, certain components like the headset bearings, the rear shock linkage, and as you mention, the skid plate, are simply not rugged enough to handle more aggressive riding. So for me, I wish you would have talked about the weaker components of the Sur-Ron, and anything you've done to improve those components, and whether those upgrades/modifications have been worth the money, because that would be the only way I would even consider another Sur-Ron. Even the Storm Bee looks like it isn't built to handle the punishment of dirt bike riding (I'd buy the KTM Freeride E over the Storm if that was my only option). Too bad the Alta is no longer available, that was a great E-bike. Still waiting (and hoping) for something like it from another manufacturer (KTM, Yamaha, Honda all seem to have concept bikes in the works), but for now I'm enjoying the content on you channel and others like it. Keep the mods coming ... who knows, maybe one day your mod bikes will be exactly what I'm looking for.

    • @emotobros
      @emotobros  2 роки тому

      Yeah definitely some improved durability with these upgrades but like you mentioned even with this stuff they don’t match a full size bike. You’d need to box in the frame and change all linkages for it to really be stiffer. At some point you just add a bunch of weight but it’s been done!

    no no no a 16 in rear tire has a massive variety of tires and you can fit a moto style 16 rear that has less centrifugal force allowing for better stunting better e braking better power to ground you can use a smaller sprocket and still get gains. the lower the power you bike has the smaller the rear provides gains
    a 21 on a mountain bike has insane limits to tire size and yes it handles better speed over rough terrain but then you basically must improve forks.
    a 21 only really benefits taller riders. a 16 or 18 is best front tire based on science. preference or opinion may vary but science takes a lot of factors in to account.
    without the battery and controller enhancement larger wheels will cut power drastically the only benefit larger tires truly grant is top speed on flat or decline

We recommend 64t sprocket to everyone which more than makes up for any loss in mechanical advantage with the larger diameter wheels/tires.
