I’ve luckily tuned out the mcu fan toxicity by only going to you guys for news, reactions, discussions etc. because yall are positive, understanding, and constructive. That said, even I started losing interest in the MCU post endgame because of the overwhelming output and overall dip in quality. I found myself leaving a lot of mcu shows and movies feeling that they were just okay. It also doesn’t help that it’s been a long time since we’ve seen characters. But when an MCU project hits, I’m there to support it and talk about it. My favorites have been Loki, Ms. marvel, X-men 97 and Deadpool. These projects leave me inspired and excited about the MCU. I just want to see high quality stuff.

I fully believe that Thunderbolts is gonna be the Guardians of this saga, not just in terms of being the underdog surprise hit that nobody expected, but also because it’s gonna be a group of misfits finding understanding and connection with each other. These are all characters dismissed, disregarded, tossed aside, and used whether in universe or by the audience, and I think this story is gonna be eye opening on some of these characters so that fans will look at them in a new light. Never underestimate the underdog story.

Every reason everyone made about why they didn’t like the RDJ is why Avengers Doomsday will be so good when the Russo Brothers knock it out of the park. Let them cook, they’re 4/4 with Kevin and Marvel.

Right! every reason they made as to why they didn't like the RDJ casting is why Avengers Doomsday will be so successful, people judge before they see it and when the movie does comes out and be successful because RDJ is a amazing actor, I will remember all the fans talking shit, or wanted another actor to play Dr. Doom, and doubting the movie.

Hector is 1000% correct about the thinly-veiled racism and sexism that's inherent in much of the criticism of phase 4 and 5. Not every critique is coming from that place, there are plenty of valid things to bring up that haven't been great. But it's become increasingly easy to tell when the same people have the same dumb things to say as soon as a trailer drops for a new project led by a person of color or a woman.

Probably in the end credits of fantastic four when they move over since they start in a different universe as well. We can still very much have our own Doom later who's a different actor

Matt Shakman did say he’s known about the RDJ casting for a hot minute. He also would neither confirm or deny RDJ being in Fantastic Four. I’m going to assume then that this Doom is from the same universe as the Fantastic Four. That’s just my opinion though. I could be dead wrong and reading way too much into Matt’s comments.
I’ve really enjoyed phases 4 and 5 of the MCU. I really push back against this “directionless” idea that people have, especially phase 4. I love that almost every phase 4 project dealt with grief in some way. Shang-Chi and Eternals have been my favorite projects post Endgame.

*Grabs mic* Oh, so y'all want me to talk about Eternals? Get ready, I've got a whole essay prepared. I could wax poetic about how warm this movie is (we don’t talk enough about how emotional the Eternals are as superheroes. They suffer devastating losses, a shattering of their realities/conceptions of self and we see them cry! A lot! We see them sob at the news of Ajak’s death. Druig cries when he’s told that as gods, essentially, they cannot step in to end genocides and mass colonizations of entire peoples. He also cries because Ajak is willing to erase who Thena is in order to “cure” her “mental illness”, something he condemns. Sersi cries when she learns the true fate of planet earth and the actual mission that her and the other Eternals were sent on. Thena weeps as she experiences madweary and is unable to help her fellow comrades when under attack. Ikaris cries as he experiences guilt. Phastos breaks down in his utter disappointment in humanity and how they’ve used his gifts to harm one another. This is such an emotionally rich film and it's honestly such a breath of fresh air in movies like these where tragedies happen and heroes recover quickly or aren’t given time to feel. The psychological aspect behind being a super powered being burdened to protect is so-)
But I did want to speak on some of the criticisms around the film because I don't necessarily disagree with a lot of them, just that none of faults this movie has ruins it for me. It would benefit from some trimming and a bit of lengthening, sure. I feel like there's a 3 hour version of this movie that makes it into people's top 5 MCU projects. Hear me out:
The weakest point of the film were its two central characters, Sersi/Ikaris whom the movie is hinging much of the emotional weight on when it is most effective with the rest of the other Eternals.
Like the whole Ikaris/Sprite situation: it is absolutely understandable to me why Sprite, a 7,000 year old being stuck in the body of a 12-year-old, would be angry about never “growing up.” Though not explored in the film, I get why she is jealous seeing Sersi-the first of the Eternals to experience romantic love, be married-get everything that Sprite herself also wants because she will never be able to have that. That’s a really interesting and complex character piece. So I buy that there would be a love triangle, I just don’t know why Sprite likes Ikaris at all besides reasoning that he is an objectively attractive person with leadership capabilities, is portrayed as the protector and most powerful of the group. I get that her pain is the perpetual feeling of never leading a “full adult life” but why she’s attracted to Ikaris specifically is never explored. There is a version of this love triangle where Sprite likes Sersi as opposed to giving her the compulsive heteronormative desire for a man and nuclear family. It would’ve been neat to see a Sprite, and honestly more of the Eternals, rejecting the heteronormative conventions of our society. (In my mind, Sprite is nonbinary, Druig is gender queer, Makkari is bi, and Ajak is aroace. The Eternals are basically lower level gods-below the Celestials that is-so I don’t buy that all of them would occupy any one gender or sexuality.)
That said, had the movie been longer, the payoff for Sprite’s betrayal would have been that much more impactful because it is only in the rewatches that you notice the exchanges she has with Ikaris; they are caring and affectionate towards each other (but moreso in the way of a protective parent-child). That scene where the 3 of them are in the car driving to meet Ajak before finding out she has died, Sersi is driving, Ikaris is in the back looking longingly at her and resting on his shoulder happily is Sprite. At first you don’t think much of this, but it isn't until the end that you recall moments like these as ones that Sprite savors because it is the only way she can be close with him. We needed to have seen more of that to tension in order to convince us of her leaving the group to run away with Ikaris since that is all she ever wanted, regardless of the fact that she truly does love and care for Sersi who has been her sole companion, friend, and confidant post the Eternals dispersing. The runtime as it stands does not allow us to feel Sprite’s wants as deeply as she feels them. I don’t feel her desperation for another kind of life enough for her to stab Sersi. She tells us the absence she feels, but we don’t see it except for those small background moments like her watching any interaction that Ikaris and Sersi have in sorrow.
Similarly, I wanted to see more of Ikaris’ quiet devotion to the Celestials because his conflict is basically: believing in a god + divine order in the face of free will and the truth that gods are not all perfect. His story arc is loss of faith; he goes from being a firm believer in the Celestials to realizing all his devotion should go to his loved ones. I needed to feel his unyeilding trust in Arishem so much in order to justify why he feels he must kill the spiritual leader of their group in order to preserve the only thing he knows. Because essentially, if the celestial Tiamut was willing to aid the Eternals in his own death so that earth could go on living, then it meant that 1) Arishem is not the supreme or only authority, 2) Arishem’s way is not the only way and, 3) Sometimes gods are wrong. Ikaris kills himself because he no longer understands his own purpose. His guilt over the means with which he sought to protect what he thought was natural and right by harming members of his own is such rich, dramatic material. He makes for a good tortured villain, and with a cast this stacked, the bad guy had to be someone within the family, so I wish we got to explore more of his internal dilemma. That way his stoicism in the film feels that much more intentional right from the get-go.
Lastly, Sersi’s character evolution is of coming into her own. We are told that Sersi underestimates herself, her own strength and we see others underestimate her power set. I would have liked to have seen more of a focus on Sersi testing the limits of what she can do and her dealing with having her wings clipped. She is made to believe she cannot transform sentient beings, something that turned out to be a lie so, Ajak/Arishem have been holding her back from reaching her true potential for whatever reason, at least it is implied (or maybe this was something she told herself but Ajak would’ve known differently still). So much of her character was entangled with Ikaris that if given more time, it would've been good to see her navigating her own isolated struggle outside of him and discovering herself.
Of course, Thena + Gilgamesh/ Kingo + Sprite/ Druig + Makkari are duos that I would have liked to have spent infinitely more time with, as well as Phastos with the life he carved out for himself. Ajak was also let go of too soon. If she indeed had to go, I think with more time, seeing her have more suspicions of the Celestials’ plans and ultimate rejection of their way, plus her growing affection for humans, and her mistake in how she raised Ikaris (because she is partly responsible for why he turns out the way he does and was setting him up to be her successor to fulfill the duties of the Celestials) all would have been interesting to see.
That said, I understood the moves they were making, they just didn’t have the time to make them as impactful as they could have been given all the world building it was tasked with...
Guys I watched this movie 7x in theaters, three of those viewings were all in the same week. There's so much more I have to say, but I'll leave it here. I LOVE Eternals and I'll be DEVASTATED if we never see those characters again. In a world where Thor 2 flops and Chris Hemsworth still gets 2+ more films, the Eternals should still get to continue their story, especially given how artful it is. This will be my villain origin story, I swear.

marvel has already told the audience roughly how this is going to work in bits and pieces. RDJ is playing the victor von doom from the universe that the new fantastic 4 are from. its already been stated that the fantastic 4 are from another universe other than the secret timeline, and that its not a origin story and that its a retro futuristic timeline. thats why RDJ is perfect for this victor role as he is older now and the fantastic 4 we are getting are already established.
in the fantastic 4 footage they showed at hall H, reed richards is studying the possibility of the multiverse. so whatever ends up bringing the fantastic 4 over to the sacred timeline also brings their victor von doom which of course will end up causing confusion when he shows up looking like tony stark. since the sacred timeline is missing its tony stark (who is most likely the anchor) this new victor/tony may become the new anchor of the sacred timeline which will mess everything up
Also if you watched the hall h footage, RDJ says new mask, same task. what was tony starks task in the MCU? a suit of armor around the world. what was on stage with RDJ during his dr.doom reveal? Doombots, the robots dr. doom makes. new mask, same task.

The Multiverse Saga has given them the opportunity to fold in Fox and Marvel Netflix characters. I haven't always been happy about certain reappearances, but I'm confident Feige and team know this Saga is the best excuse to test and flex concepts. Phases 4-6 had to navigate Covid, strikes, Disney+, and an actor problem. I think the other side of this will be more cohesive (barring any repeat catastrophes).

While Disney+ was a great place to expand the universe and tell cool stories, I know people didn’t watch every single show and movie that was released.

Doom did this to gain access to Stark industries and Tony was left with amnesia thinking he was Doom - but he was still Tony at heart and became a good version of Dr Doom

Falcon and the Winter Solider should have been the new Captain America movie for Anthony Mackie. She-Hulk Should have been a movie. I feel like the plot that happened in those shows could have been told over the runtime of a movie and better serve the story that they are trying to build to.

They're gonna pay that Dr Strange line off "Didn't you guys chart in the 60's?" Just like Dicaprios character in Once Upon A Time they had him doing singles and commercials. The F4 are going to be celebrated celebrities which gives a very cool new unique vibe. Can't wait.

What's weird is that I'm on both sides of the fence with RDJ as Doom. On one hand, I would've loved someone else to play Doom (which is still possible), but on the other hand, I can't help but to be psyched that RDJ is back and playing a character that I didn't see coming (more or less).
From a business standpoint, I get why you bring back RDJ (and the Russos to an extent). The last few years have not been great for Marvel Studios, and bringing back names that helped people flock to the MCU initially is a smart move.

Im fown with RDJ as doom. The issue is people cannot separate him from stark. But, thats what get you in the seat, how do they do the separation? He wont even be the main doom. If everyone trust the Russos, then have faith that this will work. If anyone trust Mcfeely, then trust the writing. Im saying people need to give it a chance before saying how bad RDJ is for casting, cause we dont know. What i do know: we are all gonna watch the movie anyway

I do get the racism and sexism argument, it’s 100% valid and why a lot of people act the way they are around the MCU. But also the “three white guys” were in a universe with about 6-10 other superheroes while they built a universe! I’d love Shuri or Shang Chi to have a trilogy by now to evolve them and their stories, but they’re in a much bigger pool of characters now so connecting to characters is difficult. People love Scarlet Witch because they’ve had the time to get to know her in a less crowded pool.

Favorite stuff post End Game: Wandavision, Loki, Spider-Man NWH, Shang Chi, Eternals (so much better than people give it credit for), She-Hulk (did some really interesting meta commentary), Moon Knight. There was some stuff I didn’t love (Secret Invasion), but the notion that it’s all bad or down hill is silly. I’ve always been of the belief that it was going to take longer to loop back around into a big event movie with so many more characters.

What I have a strong feeling about is that, Hector don’t get mad, this particular version of Victor Von doom is not going to be a mix of mysticism and technology like you are used to. I think this is going to be straight up technological wizard. Also, I am having the impression that much like the fantastic four there’s absolutely no origin story whatsoever. he is just going to exist already from the word go and that most probably the doomsday movie is him destroying the universes to consolidate the power

  • @francisco_m7849
    @francisco_m7849 Місяць тому

Here is another one for you fan theory of mine. Victor Vue in the fantastic four universe runs parallel to Tony Stark in our 616 universe. The only difference is the physical time in history that it all happens. In other words Victor Was paralleling, Tony Stark, and then one day because of how Victor grew up, he then the guys of Dr. doom. I mean to be honest the way Tony Stark kind of played out growing up in the Marvel universe, then seemed quite that different to dr. doom. They both lost their parents at the young age. They both went into the sciences because they were super geniuses. But were Tony Stark had his parents until the day. He was a teenager and everything else happened from there and the case of Victor Vue, parents died and early age, and he went off to study and ran into read, and and then left back to latveria because he wanted to use his knowledge to bring prosperity to his homeland. I’m just throwing suggestions out there.

We should be focusing and building these characters up not just giving them a series and then waiting 4 or 5 years before seeing them again. There is no connectivity between the projects showing us how these characters relationships. The Infinity Saga had that which made it strong.

    The wrestling analogy is perfect.
This is the equivalent if a well beloved wrestler came back for one more run straight to the top over the previous talent that the audience has invested in. I hate it, I'm also like Augustine in where the more I think about it the more I don't like it. Also I really don't like feeling super confident in where the story is going either, it feels too predictable now that the announcement of RDJ is made.
He's going to be from the F4 timeline
He won't be the main villain as we are to believe it's Galactus (which is annoying as well)
At the end of that movie once Reed or he figures out Multiverse travel, he will then go through the portal and that will lead into Secret Wars.
I don't like that it feels predictable. My favourite part about the Infinity Saga is I didn't know where the overall story was going to go. Whether they had a plan or not, I was always pleasantly surprised but this "surprise" feels like nostalgia bait and quite honestly, very desperate. Why not cast someone new you can trust to be the next big bad? Idk man, I just don't understand it. I get theres a Bendis run that from my brief research is quite liked/loved, but how the hell are you going to cram that in and take away the spotlight of what you've already established?

I definitely sympathize with you guys on the mixed emotions around the shock reveal of RDJ as Dr Doom. I am not a comic book reader personally, but I’ve mostly enjoyed the films over the last decade and a half. I don’t know if this could be explained somehow through comic books or not, but I am curious and cautiously optimistic that the Russo brothers can make this work. If there is any director out there who can justify it and make this choice work, it’s them, because they have delivered each time in the MCU so far. I’m worried, but hopeful, and I believe that’s the same sentiment you guys have around this whole thing.

😊 hey Hector. Here’s a theory for you how about this? In the universe that the fantastic four are going to be coming from because of that landscape from hall H that they showed on the main screen how about that their universe technology advanced a lot earlier than in our universe so because of science and technology Renaissance came early. You have all this futuristic advancements, but instead of in the Late 20th century it was early 20th century and that then would leave as far as in time you have this fantastic four family of very intelligent people but set in a 1960s futuristic style setting. Now if they are saying that we will see the fantastic four again in, secret wars, doomsday what that sounds to me like either the end of fantastic four will have them escaping into the Multiverse to come to our present day 616 or it ends with them escaping and then we do not see the resolution of that until secret wars, doomsday.

I'm just keeping an open mind about Doom casting, and really feels to early to even worry about it because there is a whole 2025 slate of movies im just hoping are good enough on their own. I'm certainly not worried that RDJ can give a great performance, that in itself is in good hands, but it's hard not to be cynical about the story plan given how early they announced it. We know it's a stunt, and we already see it working it's magic with the Internet buzz, but what came first? the great idea for a story that gave them the opportunity to cast RDJ, or the need to get him back to revitalize the buzz around the MCU so they build something around that to get him back? obviously i hope it's the former and that Feige wouldn't pull such a stunt that looks so blatantly obviously cash-grabby unless he was confident that they would be able to convince most of us in the end that it was the right move.

In hindsight, it feels silly that Jonathan Majors was fired after his spat with his gf. He was the main villain, ffs. Why axe him?
This is the main reason why Phase 4 and 5 MCU are inferior to what came before. This huge, confusing pivot just looks like messy damage control on their part. Combine that with the atrocious quality of films like Ant Man 3, Thor 4, and Deadpool 3, and I would say the MCU is dead.
