I don't blame him though. I am always going to put my opponent on have it. If he goes mistake free then his opp was completely winning anyways or every game is a draw if they both play perfect.
Well you can't just expect the opponent to make a mistake in the vaccum. You need to apply pressure on your opponent so they are more likely to make mistakes or slip up. But ding's openings doesn't seem to apply any pressure on gukesh is what hikaru is trying to say
It's the fact that he is looking to draw this game as white combined with the fact that he did the same in game 2 and has been struggling all year to play sound, winning chess that makes it seem like this is a sign that he is not in a place mentally or emotionally to win.
hikaru's saying like, with white pieces and after a heartbreaking game, you should have atleast tried putting pressure on black, but he played like this wasnt even a world championship but a normal side game
I think Ding played this opening because he sees that he's constantly getting out prepared by Gukesh and he wanted to play something that takes Gukesh out of prep and just "play chess" in a pure Magnus style...
I think it is clear he did not intend to defend his title, but the Chinese state ministry decided otherwise. Also it is kind of hard to prep in some ideology enhancing camp he spent a few month last year....

Ding ig isn’t in the right mindset emotionally / mentally. Probably he’s okay with losing WCC / quitting chess. Maybe, he just wants to lose with a decent margin like 7-7.5 instead of being overly ambitious and losing games that can easily be drawn.
Lol.. Hikaru saying white Bishop would have created problem by showing one variation but there are many other variations after that and white still can't win 😂
Here's what I'll say: if Gukesh wins the match, Ding will look like a total idiot for being so casual about his prep and his questionable strategy. But if Ding wins the match, he'll look like a living legend. Think about it like this: whenever Real Madrid plays like shit for 85 minutes then scores 2 goals in as many minutes out of nowhere and goes on to win the UCL for the 145th time, all that history remembers is the comeback they pulled off and the trophy they won, not the overall performance
Also ding has been open about his mental health struggles. Given that I think hikaru is just being harsh and seems passive aggressive. He is a wounded man on a battlefield. Expecting him to play like he does in his prime is rather stupidity. Let him play and eat walnuts.
> But if Ding wins the match, he'll look like a living legend. Nah, if Ding wins, it'll be because Gukesh somehow did a Nepo and the questions won't go away.
@@lollycopter doesn't matter, Gukesh was the huge favorite coming into the match. Winning as the firm underdog would still be impressive regardless of circumstances. Not really. Every game counts. Playing for a draw with white, especially just after a break day says a lot.
Ding became champion by taking chances. If he doesn’t change his mindset of playing not to lose with white, he has no chance to win this match.
