    Emmy, hi. I was in the Army from 1977-1998 so I ate a few C rats and a lot of MRE. Did you know that for a while the toilet paper in MREs was blue? We were told it was a calming color since relieving yourself in view of others was a stressful act and the color blue would make it less stressful. Don't know if that is true but that is what we were told.

    • @emmymade

      Hello, Don! Blue toilet paper?! Ha! I wonder if there's any truth to it? And thanks for sharing that 🚽 tidbit.

    A few notes:
    1. Be very circumspect when eating the freeze-dried fruit in old MREs. When I was in the Army in the mid-80s, we were told initially to dispose of the fruit packs, then eventually told to inspect the packaging very carefully. I was told that some of the fruit had made it to packaging without having been completely dried, and some bacterium or another got a foot-hold. A few service personnel were sickened. I was taught that so long as it was under a very good vacuum and didn't have any spots which seemed soft, it was okay. Also, the production was corrected and later ones (post-circa-1989) are supposed to be safe.
    2. Some people experience something that is....well....whatever you call the opposite of a laxative effect...when regularly eating MREs. Common lore blamed it on the fortified peanut butter.
    3. There are two "recipes" you can make using ingredients from MREs. I never found either recipe particularly appetizing, but it can keep you entertained for a while fiddling with the contents of the accessory pack:
    If you open the creamer pack, pour the sugar pack into it, seal the creamer pack by folding down the package, then cook the whole thing over the matches, you can get a caramelized blob called a ranger cookie.
    Mix together the cocoa powder, creamer and sugar with the right amount of water, you get ranger pudding.

    My dad always talked about how they wouldn't drink the coffee with water, they would just put the powder (2 packets if possible) straight in their lip (as you would with say chewing tobacco). It wakes you up much faster and is much more efficient (probably more from the taste than the actual caffeine, lol) but when you have to wake up at 4:30 am I guess you'll do anything. :)

We’ve been running through your military ration playlist because you always make tea and/or coffee in those! If you had a compilation video of every time you ever made tea/coffee, we would probably watch it every day. 😂 Thank you for making all these videos, we love you!

    Old meatballs beat old socks any day! 😀
    Very interesting! My husband (an army veteran) spent 7 months in the desert leading up to Desert Storm, as well as the official first gulf war. He told me that he and his buddies used to collect the sugars and creamers from the sundries packs, then occasionally would make a sort of creamy fruit salad with the freeze dried fruit, sugar, creamer, and water. I think it was similar to the prison food recipes you try... they spent months eating pretty much MREs and nothing else for months, so they were always looking for a way to get something new as a change of pace.
    My husband's family also sent periodic care packages, and in one they included a canister of Tony Chachere's seasoning. (It's pronounced "SHA-sher-ees," btw!) He didn't want it to break in his rucksack, so he reinforced the container with a few layers of duct tape, which seemed like a great idea... until he had to jump from an airplane with his rucksack fastened between his legs. Unfortunately, the force of the landing caused the container to not just break but to explode... everything in his rucksack wound up impregnated with cajun seasoning!
    Good times... 😁

    I was married to a Marine for 9 years and we had 3 children and we loved when we'd camp and get to eat MRE's he'd bring. I loved all the little extras including, at times, the cutest tiny bottles of tabasco sauce! This was in the 1980's...so they looked just like this one.
    My personal favorite was the pork patty which came with the cookie just like that one...pretty good at the time!
    But...he had gotten hold of some old "sea rations " which were before MRE's and had more canned items which were pretty gross...but...they too had fun extras...including "one " very old non-filter cigarette 🤢
    Was fun to watch...thanks!

    The thing about the coffee , I do believe that type 1 is regular and 2 is decaf. In newer U.S. MRE's Gen 1 drink (the flavored powder like the grape you have) is heavily sugar'd? I guess is the word. It has more sugar and taste's more like what you'd expect where as Gen 2 has way less (almost none but there is just a bit) and isn't as appealing. (As you know for whatever reason in america we love to sweeten everything and add tons of sugar.)

      Been trying to research this but it seems like the MRE of today have a 5 year shelf life so I'm trying to figure out how this 26 year old one wound up being edible still unless it was sealed really good and it was the lack of air that still made it edible which seems to be the case.

    I was thinking you're crazy for eating an MRE that old. Then I remembered some friends and I found hundreds of tins of Civil Defense survival biscuits in a mine in Nevada, they were canned in 1963...
    We ate them and survived...

      Survived what?

    • @marzsit9833
      @marzsit9833 2 роки тому

      the civil defense survival biscuits were mostly sugar with a little bit of flour, they were easy to find in army surplus stores in the 80's and were perfectly good back then even though they were already decades old. in the early 60's civil defense stockpiled millions of tons of doomsday gear in fallout shelters all over the us but pretty much all of it was obsolete by the late 60's when people realized that fallout shelters don't work in reality when the nuclear bombs became huge....

    • @jasoncollins5133
      @jasoncollins5133 7 років тому +6

      In the desert we simply tore them open, tossed on some Tabasco saved from other rations, and tucked in with the spoon. Once the fighting was over and we took up a position with Kuwait City on the horizon, I sometimes dug a hole in the desert, used metal mine marking flag sticks to form a grill, poured the contents of the entree pack in my canteen cup, soaked the sand with a blend of gas and diesel in the hole and set the ground on fire. Bam! Heated MRE. I admit that it would have been nice to have the water activated heaters that they have now, but...nostalgia, right?
