Vents part 2. REPAIR the air vents from your Jaguar XK8, XKR, X100

- REPAIRING The centre face-level air vents in Jaguar XK8's XKR's and X300's x308's. These are often damaged and the horizontal vanes stop moving as a team, and start doing their own things. This can be due to hanging phone mounts or air fresheners from the vents or just the effect of Hot, cold and time on the plastic connecting clip.
The construction is not the most robust and can fail even in the most cared for cars. Equally this issue affects many brands of car and for similar reasons.
In this 2nd video (part 2) we manufacture a small part in an unusual way, and repair this vent in such a way that it won't fail again.
Another spot on video which encourages me to no longer put up with my wonky slats, thank you so much. Thank you, John.
Very welcome John.
really usefull video john enjoyed the live chat facility well done your a star. the boffins at jaguar are going to the garden centre tommorow to but all the wire stocks up.
Glad you enjoyed it
Would you like me to share your Email address and pictures on the web site from next week Michael?
@@ToTheGarage yes that would be fine
John, good timing will be trying to do mine shortly. Looks a very good solution, I’ll be giving
it a go, regards Damian
Thanks Damian👍
Brilliant solution. Many thanks for your helpful videos.
Thanks Kurt
Another brilliant, innovative solution. Before you got to the bit with the wire I was going to suggest that you send me a drawing of dthe broken part and I would get my son to produce a load on his 3D printer. However, don't bother with the drawing, your solution is far better. Incidentally in a similar situation where I had cut open an ABS 'box' I laid ABS printer filament into the gap as a filler rod. Worked really well. Keep up the good work.
Good tip! 3D printing Filament as plastic welding Rods. I like it Alan👍
Wow ...what a great job you have done ! Bravo ! John . Perfect !
Many thanks!
Fantastic instructions John and a super strong fix. I’m a new subscriber and have binged watch the videos to get more up to date. Have learnt so much that has help me with my 2001 XKR Your a Superstar Many thanks
Thanks Paul and welcome
Hi John nice easy solution to the air vent problem thanks for sharing your solution with us will help me when I tackle my vents.
Glad to help
What an extremely satisfying repair . Excellent.
Many thanks!
What a great and instructional video John thank you so much Andy Allen
Brilliant John as usual
Thanks Norman
Watched both parts of this fix even though I sold my blue cat about 2 years ago to buy the XF. I keep watching these because they are well made, entertaining and keep me thinking about having another XK8/R in my future. Thanks John.
Glad you enjoy them. Don't leave the next Xk8 too long or they will have gone up in price too much👍
Thank you very much, Great info!! From the Space Coast of Florida USA
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic! Great lateral thinking! I would never have thought of using wire. Obviously needs a bit of care with setting up the jig but a really great engineering solution. Thanks John!
Glad it was helpful!
I enjoy your informative videos and my car thanks you too. You know a good fishing line would likely work as well, I think, but would be easier to use. Of course the metal wire will last forever but might wear the plastic through. But that would be the next owners problem as it won’t happen quickly, I think.
Not sure if you can get fishing line stiff enough to push as well as pull the vanes. but as the distance between vanes is so short, maybe it would be fine. 🤔. Very interesting idea. Thanks
Hi John I have just done mine, following your vid. As an extra to stop seeing the wire, I have cut and threaded spacers on to the wire between the vanes. This I cut from the fine tube that comes with wd40 spray can. It was red but I touched this up with black paint and the finished job looks like it was meant to be. But thanks for your vid as I wouldn't have attempted it otherwise.
An excellent addition to the technique Don. Thanks for sharing. Im sure a lot of folk will follow your lead👍👍
U R the patron saint of XK
Awww. Cheers Dean
Brilliant simple solution to a tricky problem. Will tackle mine now
Glad it helped Lizzy
I have been wanting to fix this for years! Thanks to you John I now know how it’s done. Great instructive video!
Glad to help Stephen
Thank you for providing this. I have used this to accomplish the same repair on my X300 with good results. :)
Great repair John. On mine the piece that was broken on yours had become detached from the vanes but wasn’t broken. I took the unit out of the car and was able to put it all back in the right place with pliars and a bit of fiddling without cutting the unit apart. Worth checking before you reach for the Dremel - though not as strong as your wired repair.
Good to know it can be done through the back of the unsplit vent hunty28. Tweezers? needle-nosed pliers?or the fingers of a 3 year old?
Grest stuff John, when mine break I will know how to fix them, a very neat solution. Cheers.
Thanks Terry
Great video John.
Glad you enjoyed it
BTW I uploaded a 3D file for printing to fix the X300 vent system about 2 years ago though my measurements were slightly different at 9.8mm spacing and 1.94mm pin dia. I do like your wire method though for the X300 disassembly is not required (although it would make it easier). Putting the clip on in the X300 is very fiddly but can be done with a medical forceps and a small hook pick without full disassembly. 3D printing has made a lot of these "man in shed" fixes obsolete but still nice to see different approaches to a problem, I was expecting this vid to be a 3D solution?
Great bit of lateral thinking... I'm too lazy for that, lucky enough to pick up a good set for free. If I hadn't been able to find any then my friend could 3D print for me, he has done small obsolete parts for my Triumph and Scimitar.
Brilliant video!! Thanks!!
Thank you very much D Goldman 👍
Increíble solución! Muy hábil y muy paciente. Gracias por el vídeo
You are welcome👍
Better using a dermel hardened steel saw tooth blade...less than 1.0mm...less heat produced and will ‘saw’ the melted plastic away...and leave a much cleaner, less melted joint face...
Really good tip and I have ordered one Stu. Thank You👍
Thank you That helped heaps
Glad to assist
John as always love the vids, I know your an engineer at heart as I am, BUT why not just trace around the piece you have and add the extra bit, obviously allow for the 'warp factor',seeing the way you did it is the best I will copy it :)
Might make a spare original style one from the broken bit Gary👍
Nice. Did you say you didn't know what the M stood for. Probably Middle (of the vents).
Could be?
how to get to the valve for this vent. No air is comming thru. A flapping sound can be heard. are they electrical operated or?
Servo's operate all of the air. valves. Press the face level button on the. centre console and then turn up. the fan speed. If its. working then it will literally take your breath away👍
Very nice job indeed ;-) What is the quality sealing tape?
Its Gorrila brand Gaffa tape actually.
I only didn't name it in the video because I am beginning to sound like im sponsored by them lately!😁
Tickory boom, 🤠👀👌👍
👍👍😎
Great video, John. Your mentality is the same as mine. Always try to mend and make good rather than buy new. Are you from Yorkshire like me? 😊
I would have done exactly the same as you did but I would have relied on the glue and not re-done the plastic welding. Is there a particular reason that you did not trust the glue on its own?
Mainly I enjoy plastic welding😁
