    Appreciate the mention John, thank you. Finally bit the bullet this week and bought a new (used) sounder off eBay. Everything seems to be working properly now. Couple of points that people may not realise if they have later cars (2003 -). The sounder only chirps a) when the car is 'dead locked' with the remote or b) if the boot/bonnet or a door is open when the remote is used to lock the car. It does not chirp when the car is unlocked (unlike Purdey) nor does it chirp on the first press of the remote i.e. not dead locked.

    This happened to my 1999 xk8. it manifested itself in the following way: the car would chirp when opening and locking so gave me no indication that anything was wrong, however I noticed that the front fog lights would not work along with the rear fog light warning bulb. looking at various threads it seems that fuse 3 or 13 or 15 dependent upon the car can be the circuit affected. I found fuse 13 to be blown so changed it. the car chirped again as normal until I drove it and the fuse had blown again. rather than put another fuse in which I don't recommend, I looked about and found that although not listed the siren is also on that fuse! I disconnected the plug and solved the blown fuse issue, all circuits working. I was advised that the siren has rechargeable batteries and that when they fail they often create a short circuit which in turn blows the fuse.
    a great use of your time John. much appreciated.

    Hi John. As a recent xk owner I have found your videos absolutely brilliant! And with the doc pack you have on your home page I was able to trace a heater problem (only warm if engine >2000rpm) down to 5amp fuse no3 in front lhs under bonnet fuse box. Changed it and of course it blew straight away. Then I saw comments on this video and disconnected the IS, which I didn't know I had. This turned out much easier than expected as I got access through the wee hatch on the front of the RHS wheel arch liner (with full left lock, ie wheel still on). Replaced said 5amp fuse again and bingo! and that rather good feeling you get (as an amateur) when you fix something yourself that you had worried was going to need a garage and lots of cash!! Also, one not so pleasant secret I found out early on is not to park mine (a X100 convertible) front down on our (modestly steep but not unusual) drive. Water soon fills the well round the front of the boot and overflows into the boot before running backwards out of the well.. Easy solution was to park front up, then found auto box fluid on the drive. So I've now got a rather amateurish drain system installed. This might be a problem you won't come across so much in Lincolnshire!! All the best. Richard Hughes (Cumbria)

      To The Garage John, took it off tonight and it’s not easily repaired. Full of rubber filler, plug contacts broken and components look worn out. Probably live without the chirp and any potential battery drain. At least for now. Part of the weight saving (ha ha) as weighs a ton. MOT next Thursday and away we go. Thanks Damian.

    My 04 XKR has never chirped during my ownership and I don't have any random alarm issues except one..... The alarm goes off during heavy rain. I'm told it is a shock sensor located under the cover behind the rear view mirror, normally used to detect someone trying to break the glass. Some say to put some foam tape over the microphone to decrease its sensitivity but as I usually garage the car, I haven't done so yet. I also had exactly the same issue with a 1998 XK8 which lived on my sister's driveway. I was not popular as the alarm often went off in the middle of the night. It was such a pain in the proverbial for them that I ended up not locking it (as it was blocked in behind several other cars). However, not locking it drained the battery and I didn't have a charger then. Nowadays I keep the XKR in a rented garage permanently on a Ctek charger.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  2 роки тому +1

      I have heard of others having the same issue and muffling the microphone a little. If you lock the car with the key rather than the remote, it won't set the interior alarm, and I THINK🤔 it won't set the screen break detector. Not 100 % sure on that one (maybe 80%😁)

    Hi John just a quick one, my friend has just a finished a complete re-build of a Morris Marina pick-up. Total strip, everything looks fabulous, as his wife is disabled has fitted a auto box!!. The vehicle was given to him as a thank you for work he helped out with at a Garden Centre. He has now started on a Jowett Javelin van if fact he found two of them.

      The marina pick up👍👍
      I know marinas are much maligned but they were my first love. Because they were so simple they got me interested in tinkering with cars. Problems with them are never mystery's just straight forward tasks to do.
      If it were not for how badly they rusted I would probably have a large fleet of them now!
      In all seriousness they are getting genuinely scarce and less common variants such as the van and pickups even more so.
      At some stage I intend to find a decent coupe shell and build myself a nice sleeper one with a V8, banded steel wheels and a nice metallic gun metal paint finish.

    Hi John, I had an interesting one regarding the alarm sounder. I had an MOT failure because the leds in the fog light switches were not working. Changed the switch panel for a used one but same result. Front fogs would not go on and rear fogs would go on but no led light in the switch. having looked at the wiring schematics and got a suggestion from one of the forums, the problem was the sounder. The failed internal batteries were pulling the voltage down on the same circuit as the fog lights. Unplugged the sounder and all fixed. Not even bothered to replace it as the horn still works if the alarm goes off. By the way. I can hear your videos quite clearly.

    I had some serious problem with the intelligent sounder which was stopping the heater from working, basically it was blowing the fuse which also supplied the fog lights and the heater secondary pump. I disconnected the intelligent sounder, replaced the fuse ( think it was fuse 6 under the bonnet on the left hand side) and the heater worked fantastic after that. This caused me some headache at the time and I have never reconnected the intelligent sounder. So if your heater doesn’t work very well, check your fog lights and the fuse the that supplies it and if it’s blown disconnect the intelligent sounder before replacing it. My car is a 1997 XK8 convertible, hope this helps. Oh and my sounder kept going off at strange times and only chirped a couple of times and replacements are not cheap!

      Hi Roger.
      Wow I hit the tip of the iceberg with the problems the sounders can cause.
      Your comment and all the others show it as the root cause of almost as many issues as a bad battery. (and hang on a minute🤔 the sounder can cause a bad battery🤯.)
      I think I might investigate aftermarket swap outs.

    My car was doing the door lock dance both sides would go lock unlock lock unlock for like 30 sec. I found out I needed a new Vehicle battery, it lasted seven years. The alarm use to sound off now and then if I used the key to lock the car then later unlock it with the key, that was embarrassing trying to disarm it at 4am. My fob was not working at the time reprogram the fob thru the ignition key but that will only do the fob. It chirps now but the car waits 30sec to sound off again embarrassing to say the least. Thanks for the find will be looking into the horn alarm battery.

    A sealed unserviceable unit with internal NICAD batteries which can only be expected to have a life of a few years at most. What could Jaguar have been thinking? On my 2002 XK8 it is marked as LJA2620BB "Passive Sounder" but appears to have the same function? Primary horn alarm working OK after removal. I didn't pay close attention before removing it but the parasitic draw was in excess of 100ma even with the alarm turned off. I believe this is the answer to why my battery has been lasting only about 2 years at most. Am investigating practical means of removing the waterproof potting and replacing the batteries. An available replacement sounds like an entrepreneurial opportunity.

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  4 роки тому

      Hi Jag 626 guy.
      The sounder may be well be the cause of your parasitic drain 👍
      However the Passive sounder (less inteligent🤣) don't have batteries in them so less to go wrong in theory.

    Mine never sounded, I did try replacing it with a used one from Eurojag, but that doesn’t work either. There is no current to the connector when I press the lock button, so I am assuming there is a break in the loom somewhere as all fuses are intact. I have given up on it for now…

      No George. Nothing else will cease to function and another source of potential parasitic battery drain has been eliminated👍. I would only reinstate it if you REALLY want to keep full originality or are truly worried about relatively sophisticated thieves cutting the wires from your battery or car horn before towing your car away. Has anyone had any success fixing the Sounder (or sourcing a working replacement)? I bought a secondhand one but this too didn't work. They seem impossible to find new (no longer available from Jaguar or other firms, and no aftermarket equivalent that I have found), and the secondhand ones are rare to find for sale (and long since unserviceable if you do find one).
    I also think that it is somewhat unlikely that a repair would work on the Sounder because:
    a) there is sometimes corrosion of the circuit board itself
    b) it is very difficult to get at the components without damaging something as you dig out all the horrid rubbery sealant
    Would a sounder from another model of Jag work instead?

    • @ToTheGarage
      @ToTheGarage  2 роки тому

      I have had stories from others who have successfully 'dug' the batteries out and rebuilt them at home. These issues are connected with the 'Intelligent' Sounder (that has battery back up) 'Passive' sounders were fitted in many territories which essentially produce the chirping sounds without standing in for the horn when the alarm goes off. These dont contain batteries and are therefore more robust.
      Maybe I should invent a plug in self build alternative🤔

  • @peterfantom7877

    I am pretty sure my sounder went spectacularly wrong bad burning smell after battery recharge as it was running low. When I fitted the battery back in it set off the alarm and the sounder shorted out internal blew a 5 p fuse in the engine fuse box fog lights no longer work and all the lights on the internal console for that row and the heater now only works when you are above a few thousand revs that one could be a coincidence but all seems to happen at once. Hi John .... I posted this in an earlier video where you mentioned the problems of being locked out of the boot. This solution looks to be the easiest "get of out jail" card so I'll post it again in case anyone is interested:
    Many years ago, I read on the internet a way of drilling a small hole in the XK8 boot floor below the lock through which a piece of wire could be pulled which would be guaranteed to manually release the boot lock in an emergency for those whose battery had gone flat and whose "secret" key method had stopped working or had locked the keys in the boot. I did not try it because my "secret" lock has always worked properly. I'll see if I can find the link to the method.
