Alexander, thank trying to put as much video in as possible (as you suggested). Makes the videos a bit longer but maybe a bit easier to understand. Thanks for the support, regards Damian
Thanks for posting this! I am changing out my XJ8 trims from the dark XJR style veneer to the lighter, more traditional walnut. All changed except for this one, and from the manual it looks like the process is very similar for the XJ8.
Colin, No problem . Agreed, the traditional walnut really grows on you and whispers Jaaggg. I wouldn't be surprised that airbag and cover is constructed in a similar way (XJ and XK). It would be much appreciated if you could confirm if it is the same. Good luck with your project, regards Damian
@@ODRModurol Will do - certainly the replacement veneer cover has the same seatbelt material restraint and the workshop manual shows the same fixings etc for the glovebox.
@@ODRModurol Well, it's done and took about 90 mins all up. Similar series of steps to the XK8, with some differences in the number of nuts and sizes. After unclipping the trim cover, I could see two 10mm nuts/bolts to remove (I think there were some 7mm ones on the XK8 as well). Glovebox removal was identical. After glovebox removal, there were two of the same 10mm nuts/bolts underneath. After remove of those, you could push the airbag unit up and out to remove it. Rest was the same - disconnect the electrics, remove the old trim piece (same bolt types), replace (thread lock the bolts etc) with the new trim piece, then reinstall in reverse. The only tricky bit was getting the electrics/wires in, but I managed to get it all sorted in the end and it looks great! Your video definitely helped with the overall steps. Specific nuts and bolts are a little different, but the process is basically the same.
Your videos are tremendous. I am no more than a semi-competent amateur but have just changed my dashboard in an afternoon. Your instructions are really clear and you don't miss out any stages. It is also really helpful (a) to know what tools you need to have ready in advance and (b) that there are different types of tether and you can't change one for the other. Two things I did learn: 1. My airbag [MY 2005] has two electrical connections, one each side and 2. If doing the whole dashboard in one go, best to lower and bring forward the steering wheel before disconnecting the battery so that the way is clear to remove the dashboard which covers the speedo etc. Silly me! Many, many thanks. PS I took the glovebox out all in one piece, without removing the inside, and put it back all without any difficulty.
Simon, thanks for the compliment and feedback. Sounds like you enjoyed doing it too which is great. Thanks for the extra tips, much appreciate your input as a fellow amateur, regards Damian
Incredibly useful video! Without your information I might have bought an older veneer-set, that wouldn't fit to my car, because I didn't know, that there are such important differences depending on the model year! I always thought, the only difference is the airbag warning light and that's it... Thanks a lot!
Christian, thanks for the comment. Just trying to help people avoid my mistakes with Dashboard veneers and they aren’t cheap either. Planning to do a summary video once we’ve finished the change just about buying veneers. Thanks again for taking the time to comment, regards Damian
Glad to hear you got it sorted and the video helped. Interesting the glovebox was different. Mine is the 1996 model what year is yours and what was the difference. Thanks for the feedback and input regards Damian
Good theory. I was thinking it was impacting the windscreen and breaking that every time unnecessarily. Either way it seems to be a development. Thanks for the input and comment regards Damian
@@ODRModurol I'm confused. Isn't the windscreen behind the passengers? I don't have one. I was thinking when the airbag goes off the straps deflect that veneer up before it hits the passenger in the face. So it would go up and back towards the dash??? Thank you for the video.
The longer straps actually allow the veneer to rotate above the dash and contact the windscreen. I know this because I have removed it and pushed it against the windscreen several times as part of the disassembly process, regards Damian
@@ODRModurol ok this is too funny. Sorry man. I'm not up with your vocabulary. I wasn't following that a windscreen is another name for windshield. Lol. I thought a wind screen was behind the driver and passenger that stops the wind draft. I do have a windshield. 😆
Hello, Loving your videos. I don't want to remove my airbag at all but I do want to wrap my veneer and so I just want to wrap it which I can do in the car. Do I still have to disconnect the battery if I'm just removing the veneer from the dashboard and letting it hang while I wrap it?
@@ODRModurol when I do that I have to re-set the pwr windows? Is that all I have to re-do Also I'd love to see a video for repairing thr headlight washers. My left side drivers side one is missing. 2. Any video on how to fix the seat controls? Mine don't work at all on tbr passenger side and it's in the full down position so I can't access the rear seat bolts to remove the seat.
Marvin, yes you will have to reset the windows but it’s very easy. Haven’t got power wash headlights 🙁 so haven’t needed to investigate that one. Reference the seat problem have you seen this video. ua-cam.com/video/AjFiFWlAoUs/v-deo.html Hope that helps, Regards Damian
@@ODRModurol yes. I'm follong your videos now. Now I don't know if I have power washers for the lights now. I'm missing that little mirror part so I asked.
Higgins, sorry didn't weight the airbag whilst off the car. I would estimate circa 1Kg. Interested to understand why you would want to know. Thanks for the comment regards Damian
Hi, thanks for the estimation. I have a Xkr coupe year model 2000, and I have done some mods to the car. Not very intrusive modifications but some of them with the goal to make the car sharper. The most efficient way to make the car sharper is to reduce weight. Will more than 20 years old airbags fire? If they fire, will be bag cope with the load upon it? If not, maybe better remove them and save some weight. But 1 kg is not much
Higgins, ok understood. It’s an easy weight saving. Like you say is it effective anyway. It will need some modification to avoid the airbag light coming on as it will know nothings connected. That might stop the drivers airbag firing. Interested in know what you have you removed to date. Thanks for the reply regards Damian

Looks to me that they decided to shorten the newer straps a bit. Maybe those longer ones caught a few passengers.

Sir - quick question. My SK8 is a 1997 - you stated you used the 1999 manual to change the airbag veneer - is the 1997 the same?
Thank you.
Mr Wakefield,1997 is the same as shown in this video, the workshop manual covers models from 1996 up to 1999. Hope that helps, regards Damian.

I have not yet removed it. The control system expects a given amount of resistance, I think 150 Ohms. So you put a resistor instead of the connector
Higgins, ok understood, didn’t know the resistance, regards Damian
