I moved to Vietnam for work and bought my first motorcycle in 2018. Imagine learning to ride in this! Yet, I lucked out, and never had an accident, but I white-knuckled it every single day.
I learned to ride in 2011 when I was 63, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Not a big deal there but after moving to Bangkok that notion changed. Now I'm in Pattaya with all sorts of tourists who think they can handle Thai drivers (and me), as a result the local hospitals wrap up a lot of road rash. Still, not as insane as Vietnam.
i agree. However, they actually help a lot. Not everyone look at the policeman. However, people who are at the front will see them and follow their commands. The rest just follow those people. And when the police commands to stop, the people in the front will stop and everyone behind will stop as well
I usually cross that kind of traffic on a daily basis, basically you need to be aware and stuff... Also don't forget the hand trick, never forget the hand trick. Put that bad boi up and you basically have a forcefield around yourself.
Recently back from Ho Chi Minh city and this brings back good memories.....! Back in Australia I stepped onto a road from behind a truck and car 30 metres away honked furiously.....nearly died laughing
I've been all up in the Saigon life. Everyone works together in the traffic. The flow just keeps going. You never really sit still so it's really not an inconvenience.
Just came back from HCMC last week. I’m Filipino and I prefer this over Manila’s traffic jams. I just wish they’d have overpasses and/or underpasses for pedestrians in HCMC. Sometimes the flow of traffic does not stop or slow down it’s really scary to cross.
Some day. I see that there is already pedestrian underpass and overpass sign yet never actually see an underpass before, nor many people use overpass. I love Singapore Overpass though. It's so good to not to use it. Some even have lot of slope and elevator or connecting to Metro and shopping mall (celementi). How cool is that!? Someday my Vietnam could be like that, for now finish the Metro is good enough.

Yea, totally looks, like blood flowing. It also seemed peaceful. Makes ya think if this is the better way for traffic to operate, more organic, like us. Even the honking seemed just for communication purposes and people didn't seem to get offended when being honked at.
The removal of traffic lights naturally has the effect of greatly increasing awareness of traffic safety. In Vietnam, this has been used to reduce the traffic accident rate to less than 10%. Victory of reversal thinking
Freaked me out when I first encountered it but you get used to it once you realize people will actually look out and stop for you when crossing the road unlike in Australia where right of way is assigned by traffic lights and signs.
I will NEVER complain about traffic again in my city. Also, I love the non stop honking. It must be great living near a major street in Saigon. Are traffic lights illegal in Vietnam or something?
It looks crazy but once you're in it and used to it, it's really not that bad. I lived in Hanoi for two years and you get used to the traffic real quick.
