Besides terrorists in modern media the trend of the good Sultan is VERY common. I can list you many Hollywood films reaching back to BLACK AND WHITE! Where the Christians are without question evil and the Muslims are good. Why? Protestants hate Catholics much more then they do Muslims, Luther himself said as much. So in a lot of Media (Read Count of Monte Cristo) Muslims are portrayed as interesting, wise, and well mannered. It's very common. Look at Assassins Creed as the most famous example of this, Christian Bad/ Muslim Good. Then Kingdom of Heaven, the only recent big film about the Crusades and the Muslims are without a doubt the good guys in that film, the Crusaders are more or less cartoon villains. Make of it as you will but just because Muslim factions are rare (This is true, just like Africa and South America they don't get as much love, very sad since Africa would make a great place for a fantasy setting) doesn't mean there isn't positive portrayals of them. As of late I would dare to say that Christians have it worse. Most of the time Christians are portrayed as bigots, dumb, or villainous almost to the level of 'Russians are evil'. God all the factions are so cool. I can't wait to see how much this world will expand when this gets fully released. Obviously Europe, North Africa and the middle east are the main center point of this setting but I do wonder how the rest of the world is doing.
They did establish America was discovered right? Have to wonder what’s going on there. If most resources are being directed towards the war then I can imagine colonization wouldn’t be as big. And if any colonies were established I’d imagine it’d be closer to what the French did, meaning I wouldn’t expect any colonies to try declaring independence or pushing west as aggressively as they did in our world. Add in actual magic existing and even if the introduction of western diseases happens, the natives might have the time needed to repopulate. Add in conformation of a literal war against hell going on about an ocean away, and the various natives cultures have an really big incentive to start building up their own united civilization to defend themselves, plus the manpower to pull it off. Maybe we could see something like Bands of Braves coming over to act as mercenaries against the forces of hell, this both gives them money but also lets them get a sense of what’s going on so they can send info back home. Say we assume their spirits are real in some way (maybe they’re actually angels, like the Americans are another way Heaven is trying to influence this war without directly intervening, or maybe it’s something else which could add some mystery in terms of what exactly are these shamans/priest drawing power from), they use those spirits in their rule, not sure how they’d be implemented, have to look more into their mythology. Aztecs might be a good ally for hell considering how big Human Sacrifice was in their religion, could even have a rebel faction trying to do away with that.
Everyone else is doing relatively OK. Demon prescence iirc is in Asia but weak enough that they get pushed out by a coalition of sorts, but no clue on how the New World is doing. We know the faithful and the damned both have massive fleets and have staging grounds for them, (England and Gibraltar respectively) but we have no idea if they colonised or not. People like to think the native american tribes and Aztecs are now relatively powerful since they're a sea away and trade with asia is probably the excuse to give them guns.@@collinb.8542
I'm a big fan of Tuomas' work on Warhammer Fantasy as that was the period that I got into that setting alongside Mordheim. I believe there's an interview with him where he says he would have loved to have fully developed the Araby faction as an actual playable army due to his love for Middle Eastern history and mythology, but his departure from the company and, well everything that happened in the 2000s in the middle east, probably made any plans for it impossible to achieve. Glad he's getting to cut loose his passion with Trench Crusade.
I imagine they'll have one out soon. I know they got one but its internal use only rn. I think its just incomplete still. Prob gonna be posted either on Kickstarter or with the actual core book.

I am also in love with the Sultanate faction and getting the warband in the KS, another wargaming game that I think also does a respectful take of the golden age of Islam is Infinity with the Haqqislam faction, if you haven't seen it I recommend a look, they also have an assassin themed specific sub-army

Yeah, Hassassin Bahram is the name of the sectorial, they are also led by the old man in the mountain (who noone seems to have ever seen) and are dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, attacking anyone who gets in the way of mankinds pursuit of knowledge

I actually dislike Saladin since he's a r$$$ist and a murderer but when people say Saladin they really mean his brother who was an outstanding man who freed his own slaves, gave gifts to his enemies, and believed in mercy. Anything good about Saladin was likely his brother not him. I say this because not enough people know this and he was such a stand out guy he deserves to be remembered.
I would love a subfaction to be a Heretical sect of Alchemists that WERE dissecting the demons from hell to improve their own homonculi and alchemical beasts with unique Troop/Elite choices to represent that.

If anything I see it becoming neck and neck with the games right under it. Star Wars, the Lord of the Rings one, Bolt Action, ect. Which is not a small feat should be said. GW is the market top dog. They are *the company* you think of when it comes to tabletop war gaming. Then we have a couple of other games that are either legacy games, pre-existing IPs, or spiritual successors to older long dead editions. I think it is not the Golden Age Islam. It is the Turkic Islam. There are many units that are inspired by the Ottoman, but this version of the Ottoman are more Faithfull instead of nationalist.

In an incredibly loose sense, they just have a main common enemy. For two reasons. Lore reason is both sides think they are chosen by God. So they are the one who will defeat the Satanic threat. Any blessing to the other side is interpretated as tool given to help further distract the enemy with the disposable army. Like when the Iron Sultanate got the wall, the Christians were like "oh sick, now its a two front war. Thanks God!" The more meta reason is because there needs to be a justification why every faction can fight each other/themselves. Its the nature of war games. Only game I know off the top of my head that doesn't let you do ditto battles or allow factions to fight freely is the LotR game. Only good guys vs bad guys there. For higher play you are basically required to own 2 armies on either side.
Honestly the reason I like the Sultanate so much is it’s the first Islam/turkish inspired faction I’ve seen that makes their soldiers super cool like how European knights are depicted in fantasy. For some reason must attempts just don’t do it right.
As someone with an almost entirely Gaelic heritage I would love to see a faction that represents old Celtic/Gaelic pagan traditions. Mabye a minor and obscure group that’s trying to resist Christianization and The Satanist faith of The Heretic Legion. A clan of Druidic warriors and I don’t mean D&D Druids I mean real old Western European pagan Druids. Maybe one of there patron gods could be Cernunnos the horned god.

I haven't had the chance to play Mirage but want to. I've seen some good video breakdowns of it and I have a feeling I'm gonna feel the game is fine lol. Not gonna peak shit like the older games but I'm gonna like it waaaay more than Odyssey or Valhalla. Every time I would go make time to go play it something new comes out lol. Let us just say that while I thought the game was fine, there is a certain perplexing narrative choice in it.
I really love what they did with this faction…. but im a bit concerned how much they get inspired by the ottomans although the iron sultanate is clearly the continuation of the Seljuks. There is a major difference in governance and traditions when it comes to the Seljuks therefore taking unique things attributed to ottomans such as clothes, military troops and names doesn’t make sense, although it might be cool. This overshadows the uniqueness and beauty of the Seljuks. I hope they stay true to the Iron sultanates roots and gives us more Seljuks based stuff in the future.

Maybe my use of it in this context is more colloquial than it is accurate, but I mean that the treatment of all Eastern cultures as a whole, simply for the sake of being exotic from a Western perspective, whether accurate or not, could be considered orientalism, which is a taboo most people probably tried to avoid.
Props for not trying to white wash the Janissaries of IRL. Sadly I've seen people in books and on blogs support Ottoman slavery which is very sad to see. Slavery is bad. Worse when you read what they did to the boys who would grow up to become Janissaries, yikes. Overall I like this guy, still on the edge for TC some of the lore is really bad, anything history is almost always wrong, I can't get over the time traveling Templars. But Glueboy does a very good job making it fun and interesting.

The creator trying to pretend he's well read on history is a little insulting since one of the first things I learned about this game was that they (by mistake) made the Templars into time travelers. Also its pretty clear that they hate Christians which is funny since they are making a game about the Crusades lol. The Christians start out as evil cultists, lose their holy city, lose their other holy city, clones of Jesus (This is clearly meant to be offensive), wiping away the Crusader Orders almost all together (The icons of the Crusade and the poster child Templars are the main villains of the story), naked nuns (Need I say more?), Muslims are the good guys (I mean, sort of right). This is fine to some degree of course since the Crusades are for obvious reasons a contentious subject, but then why make a setting about something you hate? Someone needs to play as the Christians and no one will if they aren't appealing.
Multiple points for this cause I think there are some misconceptions. The Templars being the ones to turn and cause Jerusalem to fall is a common point to bring up. Specifically with the irl timeline disparency. Templars were chosen because they are cool, and reflects the attitude the Church latter had pinning the blame for a lot of things on their backs in our history. Also there actually is some historical documents placing the Knights Templar at that point! Can you trust it completely? Probably not. The writings of Simon St. Bertin. Can always claim he was right for an alt history game. Also important to note this is a lore decision made by a different writer than the one being referenced. Tuomas is the person your referencing here and Mike Franchina made that initial decision like at the beginning of the games creation. Tuomas is the guy who is in charge of the games lore as of now. And idk if that lore point is gonna be fixed with its actual release after so many people pointed it out. Also idk man, I really dont see anything for the creators "hating Christians." Like for starters this game isnt even about the Crusades? The timeline split (but also not really this is a separate universe) just starts at the first Crusade. Its religious alt World War 1. Tbh I'd also say if you had to declare 2 "good guy factions" it would be the Iron Sultanate and New Antioch. Both are potrayed acting pretty chill all things considered. I only put that in quotes because war game narratives give wiggle room by necessity. That way you can have any faction fight each other, even itself. Christians dont start out as evil cultists. Just some of them get corrupted and make a very bad decision. If losing their holy city is evidence of hating Christians then that also feels like some evidence for hating Islam as well? Both lost cities they considered holy and that plot point is more potrayed as them being fully on the back foot militarily. As the timeline is them running to a defensible position. Either creating Antioch or in the Muslim's case, dying for years until a miracle gave them the Iron Wall. I also struggle to see how crusaders and templars are the current villains of the story. The Hell factions are either hellish WW1 soldiers, plague monstrosities, or embodiements of the 7 deady sins. Like the game does take place in 1914. Important to remember. Then if potrayals of religious iconography in this manner is deemed offensive thats on the individual person I guess. Personally I don't think invoking the sacrament, nuns, or Jesus in a much darker manner is an indication of hate. I think you can potray something artistically without them twiddling their fingers thinking of how much they hate Christianity. Might just not be for people if they don't like seeing it. Fairs fair. To expand on the comment above me, the creators certainly aren't hating Christians while loving Muslims. The Iron Sultanate does plenty that goes against Islamic theology, creating abominations and recreating life on their own goes directly against Islam. The imitation of Allah's creation is a sin to the point it's even frowned upon by many to make illustrations of faces. New Antioch isn't much more evil than the Iron Sultanate or vice versa, so I believe your hatred for Islam is clouding your judgement on the creator's thought process behind building the setting. @Jonnell01 Very nice comment. But I think I have to disagree. The Knights Templar are actual demons and it seems we won't be getting any actual Crusader factions for the Crusader game. The Christians get stomped pretty bad, they lose their holy city, Muslims do not, then their fortress cities gets blown up, Muslims don't have their city blown up, the New Antioch guy is a dictator, Muslims seem to be chill, and the second most evil faction has naked nuns (How is this not meant to be offensive, lol). I think that the whole, they make monsters, thing is questionable since they aren't even alive, I think there is a gray zone there also it's clear in the lore that God came and saved the Muslims with a giant wall to defend their holy city Mecca, not so much for the Christian holy city which is a portal to hell. The lore is just not good if I'm being honest, it's just a watered down 40k, better than New K but it needs some work. I think that once they get some better writers in that it could go places, I'm not saying it's over for myself I might come back but it's going to need some work. (The knights lore is some of the worst stuff I've ever read. It makes no sense but I won't get into it. I'll save any venom for when they make that faction in ten years, lol). But that's to be expected, the team they have right now are randoms pretty much but they are bringing on some old 40k guys and that I'm excited for, they should clean stuff up. They did establish America was discovered right? Have to wonder what’s going on there. If most resources are being directed towards the war then I can imagine colonization wouldn’t be as big. And if any colonies were established I’d imagine it’d be closer to what the French did, meaning I wouldn’t expect any colonies to try declaring independence or pushing west as aggressively as they did in our world. Add in actual magic existing and even if the introduction of western diseases happens, the natives might have the time needed to repopulate. Add in conformation of a literal war against hell going on about an ocean away, and the various natives cultures have an really big incentive to start building up their own united civilization to defend themselves, plus the manpower to pull it off. Maybe we could see something like Bands of Braves coming over to act as mercenaries against the forces of hell, this both gives them money but also lets them get a sense of what’s going on so they can send info back home. Say we assume their spirits are real in some way (maybe they’re actually angels, like the Americans are another way Heaven is trying to influence this war without directly intervening, or maybe it’s something else which could add some mystery in terms of what exactly are these shamans/priest drawing power from), they use those spirits in their rule, not sure how they’d be implemented, have to look more into their mythology. Aztecs might be a good ally for hell considering how big Human Sacrifice was in their religion, could even have a rebel faction trying to do away with that.
Everyone else is doing relatively OK. Demon prescence iirc is in Asia but weak enough that they get pushed out by a coalition of sorts, but no clue on how the New World is doing. We know the faithful and the damned both have massive fleets and have staging grounds for them, (England and Gibraltar respectively) but we have no idea if they colonised or not.

I'm a big fan of Tuomas' work on Warhammer Fantasy as that was the period that I got into that setting alongside Mordheim. I believe there's an interview with him where he says he would have loved to have fully developed the Araby faction as an actual playable army due to his love for Middle Eastern history and mythology, but his departure from the company and, well everything that happened in the 2000s in the middle east, probably made any plans for it impossible to achieve. Glad he's getting to cut loose his passion with Trench Crusade.

I actually dislike Saladin since he's a r$$$ist and a murderer but when people say Saladin they really mean his brother who was an outstanding man who freed his own slaves, gave gifts to his enemies, and believed in mercy. Anything good about Saladin was likely his brother not him. I say this because not enough people know this and he was such a stand out guy he deserves to be remembered.

I love seeing Arabic and Islam in sci fi and fantasy settings; specifically for me it's Haqqislam in the Infinity wargame, seeing how a sci fi Golden Age Islam would work, fascinating!
Idk about Infinity except the bare basic surface level of the factions in their appearance. But them and the Combined Aliens are easily the coolest.
I think it is not the Golden Age Islam. It is the Turkic Islam. There are many units that are inspired by the Ottoman, but this version of the Ottoman are more Faithfull instead of nationalist.

In an incredibly loose sense, they just have a main common enemy. For two reasons. Lore reason is both sides think they are chosen by God. So they are the one who will defeat the Satanic threat. Any blessing to the other side is interpretated as tool given to help further distract the enemy with the disposable army. Like when the Iron Sultanate got the wall, the Christians were like "oh sick, now its a two front war. Thanks God!"
The more meta reason is because there needs to be a justification why every faction can fight each other/themselves. Its the nature of war games. Only game I know off the top of my head that doesn't let you do ditto battles or allow factions to fight freely is the LotR game. Only good guys vs bad guys there. For higher play you are basically required to own 2 armies on either side.

No but their homunculi understand that their existence is going to be one of endless suffering.
As someone with an almost entirely Gaelic heritage I would love to see a faction that represents old Celtic/Gaelic pagan traditions. Mabye a minor and obscure group that’s trying to resist Christianization and The Satanist faith of The Heretic Legion. A clan of Druidic warriors and I don’t mean D&D Druids I mean real old Western European pagan Druids. Maybe one of there patron gods could be Cernunnos the horned god.
That is actually a really cool take for an Islamic faction in the setting. Also perhaps the most intriguing so far as it does feel more like a society in itself.
By the way, a somewhat random question, but have you had a chance to play AC: Mirage? And if you have, what did you think of it?
I haven't had the chance to play Mirage but want to. I've seen some good video breakdowns of it and I have a feeling I'm gonna feel the game is fine lol. I really love what they did with this faction…. but im a bit concerned how much they get inspired by the ottomans although the iron sultanate is clearly the continuation of the Seljuks. There is a major difference in governance and traditions when it comes to the Seljuks therefore taking unique things attributed to ottomans such as clothes, military troops and names doesn’t make sense, although it might be cool. This overshadows the uniqueness and beauty of the Seljuks. I hope they stay true to the Iron sultanates roots and gives us more Seljuks based stuff in the future.

The Iron Sultanate is the continuation of Seljuk Turks, it has nothing to do with arabs. Those assassins aren't a part of the Sultanate either.

Props for not trying to white wash the Janissaries of IRL. Sadly I've seen people in books and on blogs support Ottoman slavery which is very sad to see. Slavery is bad. Worse when you read what they did to the boys who would grow up to become Janissaries, yikes. Overall I like this guy, still on the edge for TC some of the lore is really bad, anything history is almost always wrong, I can't get over the time traveling Templars. But Glueboy does a very good job making it fun and interesting.

The creator trying to pretend he's well read on history is a little insulting since one of the first things I learned about this game was that they (by mistake) made the Templars into time travelers. Also its pretty clear that they hate Christians which is funny since they are making a game about the Crusades lol. The Christians start out as evil cultists, lose their holy city, lose their other holy city, clones of Jesus (This is clearly meant to be offensive), wiping away the Crusader Orders almost all together (The icons of the Crusade and the poster child Templars are the main villains of the story), naked nuns (Need I say more?), Muslims are the good guys (I mean, sort of right). This is fine to some degree of course since the Crusades are for obvious reasons a contentious subject, but then why make a setting about something you hate? Someone needs to play as the Christians and no one will if they aren't appealing.
Multiple points for this cause I think there are some misconceptions. The Templars being the ones to turn and cause Jerusalem to fall is a common point to bring up. Specifically with the irl timeline disparency. Templars were chosen because they are cool, and reflects the attitude the Church latter had pinning the blame for a lot of things on their backs in our history. Also there actually is some historical documents placing the Knights Templar at that point! Can you trust it completely? Probably not. The writings of Simon St. Bertin. Can always claim he was right for an alt history game. Also important to note this is a lore decision made by a different writer than the one being referenced. Tuomas is the person your referencing here and Mike Franchina made that initial decision like at the beginning of the games creation. Tuomas is the guy who is in charge of the games lore as of now. And idk if that lore point is gonna be fixed with its actual release after so many people pointed it out.
Also idk man, I really dont see anything for the creators "hating Christians." Like for starters this game isnt even about the Crusades? The timeline split (but also not really this is a separate universe) just starts at the first Crusade. Its religious alt World War 1. Tbh I'd also say if you had to declare 2 "good guy factions" it would be the Iron Sultanate and New Antioch. Both are potrayed acting pretty chill all things considered. I only put that in quotes because war game narratives give wiggle room by necessity. That way you can have any faction fight each other, even itself.

I also struggle to see how crusaders and templars are the current villains of the story. The Hell factions are either hellish WW1 soldiers, plague monstrosities, or embodiements of the 7 deady sins. Like the game does take place in 1914. Important to remember.
Then if potrayals of religious iconography in this manner is deemed offensive thats on the individual person I guess. Personally I don't think invoking the sacrament, nuns, or Jesus in a much darker manner is an indication of hate. I think you can potray something artistically without them twiddling their fingers thinking of how much they hate Christianity. Might just not be for people if they don't like seeing it. Fairs fair. Not everything is for everyone. I make the claim I don't think its hateful, not that you have to like it lol.
I do not mean to attack you but I feel a lot more underlying hate towards muslims from you than the creators have for Christianity. Your comments throughout the comment section have been a bit questionable, repeatedly bringing up Islam for no real reason, slandering Islamic historical figures and speaking down on the Palestinian situation.
As a Christian, I hope you find the kindness in your heart to let go of prejudice like this brother, we both serve the same God and both our religions tell us to spread kindness.
To expand on the comment above me, the creators certainly aren't hating Christians while loving Muslims. The Iron Sultanate does plenty that goes against Islamic theology, creating abominations and recreating life on their own goes directly against Islam. The imitation of Allah's creation is a sin to the point it's even frowned upon by many to make illustrations of faces. New Antioch isn't much more evil than the Iron Sultanate or vice versa, so I believe your hatred for Islam is clouding your judgement on the creator's thought process behind building the setting.
I still wish the best for you though friend, hopefully you'll eventually look at us in a more positive lense in the future.
@Jonnell01 Very nice comment. But I think I have to disagree. The Knights Templar are actual demons and it seems we won't be getting any actual Crusader factions for the Crusader game. The Christians get stomped pretty bad, they lose their holy city, Muslims do not, then their fortress cities gets blown up, Muslims don't have their city blown up, the New Antioch guy is a dictator, Muslims seem to be chill, and the second most evil faction has naked nuns (How is this not meant to be offensive, lol). I think that the whole, they make monsters, thing is questionable since they aren't even alive, I think there is a gray zone there also it's clear in the lore that God came and saved the Muslims with a giant wall to defend their holy city Mecca, not so much for the Christian holy city which is a portal to hell.
As for my other comments, like the ones "Slandering" Muslim figures. I assume you read the one on Saladin. Saladin was bad, he killed prisoners, had entire cities purged, showed no mercy to Christians or Muslims, and he had a harem (Consent? With slaves? Not likely). I do not like him very much but I will give him a lot of props for being better then Zengi (If I'm spelling that right). HOWEVER! In that SAME COMMENT I praised his brother a fellow Muslim who was such a good guy he's a borderline saint. The thing is when people say Saladin they are actually thinking of his brother, NOT Saladin. So when I say I dislike Saladin, I don't really since the guy you're thinking of I also like, just happens he was the guy in the back with far more capable leadership and brains keeping his foolish brother alive. This guy took and freed slaves and spared his enemies, you would be hard pressed to find anyone this good at the time even in the west! I am willing to admit when I see a good Muslim and there are enough of them that I can bring one up from memory on the first man named. (Also, yes, Christians were also bad at this time, I'm not stupid. They did sack the Holy City. Of the times or not killing women and children is bad.)
As for Palestine? That wasn't me, I was responding to someone else. Yes, I support Israel only because I know that my chances of visiting the Holy City are best when it's controlled by them. I know that might be selfish but it was a very dangerous place under the Ottomans and British. Of course I think the killing should stop, unless your a monster you would want the killing to stop.
At the end of it, it's just the vibes I guess. They are sort of feel bad. I was really looking forward to this game but it was something of a let down. It's more so that I feel that whoever made this game likes their faction more then mine and that's just sad. Also, the MANY historical mistakes make it hard to get into as a history buff so I'd likely pass it up on that alone. The lore is just not good if I'm being honest, it's just a watered down 40k, better than New K but it needs some work. I think that once they get some better writers in that it could go places, I'm not saying it's over for myself I might come back but it's going to need some work. (The knights lore is some of the worst stuff I've ever read. It makes no sense but I won't get into it. I'll save any venom for when they make that faction in ten years, lol). But that's to be expected, the team they have right now are randoms pretty much but they are bringing on some old 40k guys and that I'm excited for, they should clean stuff up.
Also, the authors seem to know close to nothing about either religions so I guess everyone is in the same boat.

Why not a Khazar/Cossack-esque Jewish faction. There is a lot of Christian/European factions already in the game so having another faction that looks starkly different would be a way to set them apart visually
