Will It Run and Drive 600 Miles Home? 1957 Chevy 210 Barn Find

- On this episode, we go to a small town in California to buy a 1957 Chevy hot rod. This car has been sitting for quite some time. Can we get it to run and drive all the way back home 600 miles to Utah?
A special thanks to www.gstpautoparts.com for supplying the 17.gal fuel cell. They sell quite a few parts online, so visit them on their website and see if they can help you on your next project. - Авто та транспорт
4am and you’re driving something this loud in your neighborhood - what a legend 😂😂. Seriously tho that thing is cool, you’ve found a real gem there.
Man, you lucked out on that purchase! I was gonna say "I hear an electric fuel pump!" the first time you flipped that main power switch and cranked the key to "on"! Good stuff, man!
I would bet that the starting issues are from timing. Would also explain the running better at speed.
Awesome video. Nothing better than driving a 57 Chevy. Gonna keep watching the progress.
I have lots of old cars and I always put a kill switch. It keeps people from being able to steal it as easily. I normally put a fuel valve in too. A switch is pretty standard for those of us who drive them everywhere.
I will from now on.
I use a hidden gps tracker by pocketfinder and a kill switch
If you cut the fuel they start it and then they get caught in a few minutes
If you can make regular progress videos of this 57 , fuel tank , paint body , leading up to a local car show .
this could make your sub count sky rocket 🚀
That’s not a Bel Air…. Next step down; 210 model. Good luck on the journey with such an iconic ‘57 Chevy!!
Actually its a step down from a 210, its a 110. Less stainless around the windows.
@@garycamara9955 No such thing as a 110. Very unlikely it was a 150 since those were stripped down for police, limited production and not sold to the public. I was thinking 210 since it does not show the fancier Bel Air trim.
It is a 210. A 150 has totally different side moldings. @@garycamara9955
Great video, glad you made it home safely. There was a lot of traffic for being in the middle of nowhere. Like to see more on this classic.
Great video.. glad you made it home .. I like to take chances but the old gas tank could have been a major problem.. in the tank there is a sock on the pickup tube that notoriously will stop up .. I throw them away and use just a in line gas filter and no problems pretty much forever if you change the filter .
Hey see what you started you have a legit Gem there the 1957 Chevy Belair is a fun car that s my dream car
Great show keep up the amazing work be safe my friends God bless all sweet golden goodness in one place
Let's face it. You came up with a boneheaded plan to purchase an old car that wasn't running and drive it home without a back up plan - and you pulled it off. Congrats Mister Lucky.
lol luck was definitely on my side!
Of course it looks good, you've got yourself a 57 Chevy, you Lucky Dog!
Timing light is a must have and screwdriver maby adjust timing and carb adjustment pull a spark plug ! when you go buy something like this. Wrap the fuel line with heat shield.
The seats look like the two middle row seats out of a Chrysler Town and Country minus the headrest.
Sweet ride brother remember the car hasn't been driven in a long time and it's a brand new build that you didn't build or put together so have to learn her tuning and timing first and four most what's the internal goodies you have on that build to then learn how she performs kinda like meeting a woman 😁 anyway good luck with your ride brother 💪🤘🤙
For the windshield and rear window, buy some cerium oxide, mix a bit of it with water to make a paste and use a buffer on the glass like you were buffing paint. It takes some time but you can get almost all of those light scratches out. I have a '57 210 2 door sedan that's very similar and I had the same windshield wear. I was able to vastly improve it, made driving much more comfortable. The stuff is available online and isn't expensive.
I’ll try that, thanks!
Was about to comment about the old girl being a bit far advanced timing-wise, but I see someone's beaten me to it!
The ol' Chev still got plenty of life in her and sounds great. You aren't the first to be surprised by a little toggle switch under the dash - when I picked up my Triumph Stag and drove it up both islands of my country to home, the clutch spring got a bit weak, so I was under the dash trying to shorten it and must have knocked a hitherto unknown switch with my shoulder. Next thing I knew, the horns were sounding off loudly at regular intervals in the carpark of the motel I was working in! The car had an alarm fitted that I didn't know about!
The '57 looks like a great starting point for a project and that a lot of the expensive engine side of it (and brakes too) has been sorted already. It didn't look like the pipes went far back from the headers when you fired it up at the beginning (the way a puff of black smoke came out the back quite spread out was indicative of that) so I reckon that's probably a good part of the fumigation that was going on for you. The tach showed me something else that you might want to check - I reckon her gearbox fluid might be a bit low. She seemed to be a bit lazy on acceleration - there seemed to be a big jump in revs without changing down before she started accelerating to catch up (like a slipping clutch does in a manual vehicle) which usually signifies the oil in the box is less than the ideal amount. I could be wrong and its just a feature of the box, but better safe than shelling out for a rebuild, eh?
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. I like your easy-going style, mate. Looking forward to the next one. All the best from a new subscriber in New Zealand.
Remember: people only leave comments on a video when you trigger (A) nostalgia, (B) technical correction, or (C) envy. Go down the comments and you can see which ones fit into which category.
Well said! Thanks
I love the car! You can hear when you're starting it that the timing is off to the point of it not wanting to turn over and once it hot or up to temp it won't until it cools a bit. Once you set that timing right it should fire and start a lot easier.
The problem with your starter is heat soaking from the headers. You need to get a gear reduced starter, then it will start everytime when hot. Had a 396 Chevelle do what your 57 was doing every time it was warmed up, started beautifully once cooled down again.
Good to know, thanks
Also check timing…
Excellent point. I had a 76 Trans Am where the starter wouldn't crank if it got hot. Cool down and it would start again. I think the starter was too close to the exhaust. Was stock, so bad GM design.
To be honest before you opened the hood I really wondered why you bought this pos. But inside was quite a surprise
Great find! Gitter done..LOL
I'm 77 and grew up with what is now history..Santa Rosa CA.. still have the 56 150 utility that delivered phone books to my home in the fifties and sixties..best to you..gitter done!
56 is my favorite of the tri-five.
Hi neighbor!
The 56 is my favorite as well. My first car was a 56 Belaire sports coupe.
😮
Did you know Skip or Janet Cockcroft ? My cousins .
I love this Video Sir- YES:
I literally love this car!
Enjoyed the video and glad you're saving a 57! As a couple of people have already mentioned, it's a 210 2 door sedan, not a BelAir. Being a 210, your VIN should begin with VB57 if it was originally a V8, or just B57 if it originally had a 6 cylinder engine. So, that would be something interesting for you to quickly check out.
Nice car cant wait to see more videos of it
I had a Ton of these. 57 chevies in my early days-- I am 79 years young From Iron Mountain, Michigan- And today is January- 28/ 3024 -- I live in Michigan 49801 /// I really enjoyed this Video Sir.
I felt like strangling myself every time you talked about traffic! Sorry I couldn't finish watching.
I get it.
That car needs everything.... literally everything. Looks sharp with those wheels.
The head light needs check most of the time replace the bulb will help.
Oh my God you scored man I would take it straight back to the place you got it and do a fat burn out before I went home
Well done mate great deal and that old girl did well
I've got an old Valiant sedan, runs a 2.76 rear gear as well as a bunch of brake, steering & suspension upgrades. I have plans for it, which includes swapping the standard gearbox for an iron-case, A-833 OD unit with a set of 3.23 or 3.55 sure-grip gears in an 8.75".
What a fun video thanks for posting i had a 54 chevy and felt the same when i bought it
The ornaments on the hood were called hood rockets. I had a 57 post 2 door car. Same color. 😊
Which color?
@raym3036
The factory blue. Like mostly on your vehicle. I miss that car. There are not many good ones left in Maine.
A lot of guys put hidden security kill switches on their vintage cars. I knew a guy who rigged the cigarette lighter as the kill switch.
Happy to find another utahn on here! Awesome video and a rad car man. Subscribed!
Thanks man
Sweet ride
Maybe next time get some footage of the tow truck at minimal. With all the “will it run and drive” videos out there now it’s getting hard to believe that everyone of them are actually legit and not just staging a running car for views.
I’ll try, I’m still a little nervous or awkward filming around people. It’s weird because it’s very common to film in public these days but I just can’t seem to do it…. I tell myself I’ll do it and when the time comes I panic. 😂
Ok I'll subscribe car looks cool and sounds great hopefully you'll show more
I definitely will be doing some more videos on it.
Very cool video mate! I'm all the way over in New Zealand and even American cars in this condition fetch ridiculous money...
Keep up the good work, keen to see more of this one. cheers
What a great trip, you covered it well. That’s my bucket list car as well but I’m sure I won’t find a gem like that.
Awesome video man, awesome car. You are blessed, bro. Thank you for sharing your video and the drive home thats awesome. Thanks again!!!
Thanks!
The Summit offer carburetor but the float bowl bubble is not adjusted correct inside the carburetor. The fuel was lack and the fuel bubble was raised up too soon. Summit did not do good job of inspect the adjustment of gas needle rubber valve pressure versus 10 PSI from a good fuel cell but it will be too high tank to be attach to the underside of the Bell Air.
What a great car 👍👍
That was a lucky grab it's cool you found that toggle switch.
Such a cool car! Awesome new project!
That's one of the nice things about driving in old classic car truck people comments on them and I asked you questions ❓❓❓
57 looking so cool...reminds me when I had one ...and very cool she has a kill switch in....new sub. Happy New Year !
Thanks, Happy New Year!
Great video thank you
I'm glad I found your channel! I really enjoyed this one. I am now subbed to your channel and look forward to more of your videos! Great job!
I stumbled across your channel. I really like it. Love the 57. Brings back a lot of memories. I subscribed also and hit the bell. Can’t wait to see what is next.
That car is awesome!!
nice drive stay save the best from holland
Dude that thing is SICK!....what a perfect project car purchased at the right price 👌.....sometimes your just in the right place at the perfect time. Good luck with her seems like she's going to right person.
Great vid!!!!!!
Thanks
What a cool adventure. I subscribed need more of this.
Thanks, parts are on order….. part 2 coming soon
Cool looking ride👍👍...subscribed
This was real Interesting video,You scored😊
Nice score. Check the timing and get the carb jetted right and it will run pretty good. That elevation it's choking for air.
Badass. You scored man.
Great find
Enjoyed the video, cool ole 57!
That was fun.
Awesome find man ! Your music is , well, I hope someone likes it, and can;t wait for the next vid man.
🤣 yeah I’m still trying to find music that’s “UA-cam approved “ so I’m using the music that UA-cam provides…… it’s definitely slim pickings.
Awesome!
need to replace all fuel filters frequently until that tank cleans out, I wouldnt even mess w/ that fuel cell. Carb have internal filter? regardless go through the carb it will have particles. Keep jammim, get a speed app, Tweak timing
it runs good..
How much $$? Nice steal. Nice adventure. Would make a nice sleeper. I'd be happy with a good drivetrain, brakes, and it starts, and you've got that.
Good deal. May be back the timing off of touch. Should start easier. Smitty
Thanks for the tip, I’ll give it a try!
@@Seewhatyoustarted I mark the distributor with a sharpie. I would rotate yours back maybe 1/8 of an inch. Smitty.
Nice Score on the Car Enjoy
Thanks!
Id like to see you walking around it and showing and telling. I'm curious about the radiator. I see the inlets but that's all. Love the car
Ok I can do that. There will definitely be some more videos on this car. Thanks
Those inlets in the hood aren't inlets. They are just for show, a piece of trim goes in them.
You have a nice one started, with that eng setup. Now for the rest, are you good at welding, as there will be a lot. Though make it safe first, exhaust, rear spring's (could see the cheap spring hangers) wiring big time. Is there a relay on the power switch? If not put one in, if not able to rewire now.
Have you checked out the gear ratio yet? I had 373's with a 700r4 was a good set up, forgot that is what I had and rebuilt after blowing it up, with 342's still not bad. What trans are you running? Holly makes a nice LED headlight( pricey at 200 each ( once again Summit) but with very good light) and low amps draw.
Have you put in some fuel sys clearer in it?
Yes you were correct the ovals in the rear bumper are for the back up lights. The ing key will come out in all positions and in less you have put in lock position you can start the car without the key.
I didn't like not having an acc position so looked up later ing switch's, one from a early 60's will fit using the same lock cly and bezel. I was able to get the connecter (years ago) from a wrecking yard, that could be a problem now.
I had to put reasoner tips on the exhaust to get to a level to be able to drive it, even though it has stock type mufflers on it.
If you ever get to Prescott Az (you not all that far) so if you have reason to come this way, look me up and we will talk 57 Chevy's 😏 .
Had a chevy was vapor locking gave me fits, guy told me to take gascap off and I did solved problem ,needed vented gas cap
@13:22 It's "chrome wont get you home but it looks good while you're pushing it"
Yes the engine is running like it run and the transmission made it go. Seat belt didn't pass the inspection.
For 57 you had in order 150 business coupe , 150 ,210 , 210 Delray and Bel Air that one is either a 150 or a 210
the seats are for the middle row of van
I'd like to point out that USB ports for phones were not available or even commonly used in cars until around 2010ish so someone has been messing with that car more recently then you think.. USB charging in cars for cell phones in the 90s was absolutely positively NOT a thing. So it's fresher then he has told you or you think which is good I'd say.
Cell phones were not common until the 90s. There were car phones as far back as the late 50s. But they were as large as a suitcase.
I wouldnt want you filming outside my work either, when you make me look like an idiot who couldnt find a toggle switch in less than an hour. haha
The perfect sleeper
Good thing you didn't try fixing the electrical system.😊
You could have easily got a GPS Speedometer for your phone to know what speed you are driving.
The turn signal blinker didn't work then it is wiring problem. You can wait and don't install license plate until the blinker Chevy light works excellent. Drive by to your working site garage that the patrolled knows your are dealerships !license plate until these auctioneers will pay for signal light's wire and connect ground spare wire.
Was hoping for some wrenching- less yapping
I can't help but think that your stalling out and hard re starting was due to your replacement fuel tank. If the tank wasn't vented properly or your gas cap was on too tight, you might have been starving the tank for air and causing a vacuum your fuel pump couldn't overpower. With time on the road, driving over bumps, weight shifts, fuel atomizing in the tank causing gas pressure and body contortions, the tank's gas cap may have relaxed just a bit, to equalize and allow enough air to enter as the fuel was being siphoned out ?
I’m definitely going to redo the fuel system. I think it was done when the previous owner built the car but hard telling how long it was sitting.
Hey buddy. Indiana here. Sub scribed and thumbed up😊
Thanks !
Vapor lock or too low pressure. TBE fuel pump is a failure you will need an as pirating Holley and put some aluminum tape to the fuel line and pull more hose to go under the rocker side floor pan please.
the front bumper and only the chrome hood scoops is vintage late 60s 70s
Good luck
Thanks
Right original fuel cell is bad then buy yourself hose from red tank to the filter and plug and tight it with clamp for hose stainless steel at street and walk across parking lot of auto Zone from your sandwiches in a table that serve.
You must know Matt and Paul I just found your channel today. I will watch just about any will it runs. But vice grip you are not.😂. Hopefully you will get better I will watch for now. I might watch for years just like vice grip or Mortske or Puddin.🤣🤣👌
Thanks…. I think 🤷🏼♂️
@@Seewhatyoustarted It was a compliment I haven't subscribed yet time will tell you have to get a little more comfortable on camera. 👍👌🤣🍺💯
🤣 that’s fair
You did great. Killer car and video.
Id say your fuel lines got crap in it. Carb probably needs cleaned too.
Man, what a great fine
Do a burnout…..that’s limping it home…..hahaha
I did the LICENSE plate trick once & that's the last time. In Ca., it's a misdemeanor, big fine, court, you get the picture.
Just run it without plates IF you just got it. Don't ask me how I know.
Had a 150 model I drove from CA to TX 29 years ago. Lots of memories.
Here in Florida if they catch you with a tag from another one of your vehicles on a different vehicle it is off to jail and pay bail then court. They've already heard all the excuses and don't mess around.
@Mike-xt2ot mine happened 20 years ago, so it's possible CA is the same now too. 👍
I don't know what he paid (I also haven't watch the whole video yet lol) but that is a great find! The engine sounds like it's in good condition as well the interior is sweet too! Depending on what he paid he might have gotten a real Gem! Warning! Even though the seller told you they had just checked the fluids and they were dine people are gonna roast you big time for not checking the oil until after you started it LOL. Probably should have edited the Sequence of that oil check and when you turned it over so it looks like you did it before hand. LOL. Next time you'll know.
Oh man…. People are rough 🤣 so UA-cam holds the “inappropriate comments “ but I can still see them….. wowzers some people need Jesus 🤣🤣 thanks for the tips, They are appreciated.
40 to 50 pounds of oil pressure isn't bad, but the engine might be a little worn.
Exhaust gas is leaking smoke. Then use thermometer laser to find heat leak should smoke be hotter than early morning exhaust metal pipe then in Utah sell some brands best FEL PRO to seal exhaust system.
