  • With the final episode of the Inside the Tanks filmed at The Deutsches Panzermuseum - Munster, we bring you an armoured monstrosity - The Sturmtiger!
    The Sturmtiger was a World War II German assault gun built on the Tiger I chassis and armed with a large calibre mortar. It was designed to provide heavy fire support for infantry units fighting in urban areas.

      When it creates a cloud about 200m high and 300m around it when it fires...
      YES!
      And it was bloody slow, prone to breakdowns and if an enemy tank got within 3km then it was fkd.

      I couldn't either mostly due to the fact that trench warfare was mainly used in the First World War and not the second. Also the sturmtiger was used at long distances and would usually fire in indirect arches at it's target. Finally the gun depression was not good at all so it could not be able to point it's gun down into a trench.

      If Germany had more equipment and supplies they probably would of been a more formidable for(not that they weren't one already). But the allies had America and canada and their armies and resources which were larger than those of Germany's. So tigers and panzers were more powerful or deadly tanks. But there were more Russian tanks and Sherman's than there were any of the former. And when Germany lost control of the air they lost the war.

      Did you guys not pay attention? This was not intended for use against tanks. It was mobile siege artillery.

    • @Omen_Seven
      @Omen_Seven 7 років тому

      Honestly, I'm not so sure; the protection that modern MBT's have borders on stupid. Modern tanks are actually at a point right now where one nation's tank can't take out another frontally because of how effective the armor is.
      Here's some numbers for perspective and to help illustrate what I'm talking about: the smooth bore, Rheinmetall based 120 mm on an Abrams is said to have "about" 600 mm of penetration against rolled homogeneous steel armor (the steel tanks used to be made out of), while the front of an Abrams is estimated to have the equivalent of 800-1300 mm of RHS armor.
      All that being said, that is against physical impacts, and I don't know how the ceramic, composites, air pockets and all the other crap that makes up its armor would stand up to explosives.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 7 років тому

      Aaron Turner The natural enemy of modern MBTs is not other tanks. It's aircraft and missiles. Frontal armour is largely irrelevant if you can disable the tank with a shaped charge, detonated over the engine compartment.

    • @Omen_Seven
      @Omen_Seven 7 років тому +1

      TheThirdMan True, but that's not really what the topic was. It would be interesting to see what would happen if this monstrosity fired an HE round that detonated near an Abrams. I say near it, because even with how well protected an Abrams is, a 380 mm HE shell exploding on the tank would most likely still cause some significant damage.

    I wish they would not always repeat this same myth over and over again that the Tiger 1 was an unreliable machine ... even many historians continue to parrot this lines that someone somewhere decided. According to direct battle and repair reports the Tiger 1 was actually a formidable tank in the field. However it WAS a heavy tank without a doubt! And thus it came with the deficiencies that have been TYPICAL for a heavy tank - pretty much ALL of them had those in WW2. With correct crew training and proper maintenance the Tiger 1 was a very reliable machine in the field.

    • @CrniWuk
      @CrniWuk 8 років тому +1

      Depends about which designs and tanks we are talking about. The panzer IV and III? They have been relatively well designed. The Panther though? Was rushed in to combat, and thus suffered a lot from unreliable mechanics. Anyway, in those cases where the Germans could keep up basic maintance their tanks have proven to be usually very reliable machines. Even the Tiger 1 and Tiger 2. That's all I am saying. Of course in 1945 it becames all simply to difficult for the Germans. It was the end of the war after all.

    • @SoldatenTroopen
      @SoldatenTroopen 8 років тому +2

      +CrniWuk I think it's more of that by the end of the war, strategic bombing was actually showing results in the staggering losses in production for the German war-machine in that fuel, munitions, and spare components combined with lack of trained crew all led to the inevitable breakdown of most of their machines. Compared to all the other nations fighting, the Germans were more prone to having unreliable vehicles because they were using either hastily produced machines or ones that had been refitted too many times that they eventually broke down.
      Look at the Ardennes offensive, the only reason why the Germans halted was because they ran out of fuel and ammunition for their vehicles and ended up scuttling most of their vehicles or they simply broke down in the cold weather and mud and were abandoned as the Wehrmacht infantry support were forced back. When the Allies came in, they just assumed it was due to faulty machinery when in fact it was because the Germans could no longer support their heavy armour.
      Primarily, the main issue goes to their fighting doctrine. They relied too heavily on Blitzkrieg tactics and always being able to capture the resources they needed that when the tide was turned, their infrastructure for the military couldn't bounce back.
      There are however a very small percentage of vehicles that were sabotaged from PoW and concentration camp labor but those numbers are unreliable and much smaller to what actually was the more common source: self destruction as the Wehrmacht retreated.

      Commissar Gaunt
      Well as much issues as the Germans had, but you have to take a look at the other nations and their tanks as well. Take the Pershing or KV1 as example or the early version of the T34-76. Those havn't been exactly the most reliable tanks either. All nations had issues with transport, reliablity and the economy. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Even the US, since they had not only to manufacture everything but also send it like several thousand miles over the atlantic ocean.
      I would say you can not make a general argument either about the Germans or the Allied tanks. You have to look at the machines and battles they where thrown in. The Panther has proven to be a very unreliable machine in the battle of Kurks with almost all of the Panthers lost due to mechanical failures. Yet the Panther later provd to be a very good tank once most of the flaws have been worked out. Tanks like the Tiger and Panzer IV, that is shown by the battle reports and the experience of the Soldiers have been for their time and use reliable machines.
      Of course at the time of 1944 and 45 it was nigh to impossible to keep up the warmachine. So much is correct. But even in situations like the Ardenes tanks like the Tiger 2 and Panther performed reasonably well. Much better than their reputation would suggest. Of course you have also those situations where a column of Shermans took out a Tiger 2 by causing a damage to it's electical firing mechanism and the crew had to abandon their tank.

      +CrniWuk the tiger was only reliable in its retreating defensive role. Damned tank was too heavy, and an engine that consumed to much fuel making it not a good tank at all in reality.

      The Tiger, was for 1942 and 43 a decent heavy tank. As Otto Carius describes in his book, what the German heavy tanks required the most, have been good drivers and experienced crews.
      tankarchives.blogspot.de/2014/08/carius-interview.html
      About the Tiger. How reliable was it?
      "Initially, there were growing pains. The first company with Tigers was used at Ladoga, near Volkhov. The terrain is nearly impassable for tanks, and it was winter. All Tigers broke down! This happens always, with every new technology.
      A significant factor in a Tiger's reliability was the training of the driver. An experienced driver can reduce technical issues. At first, thank god, I had experienced drivers. Then we had young drivers for Jagdtigers, and it was a catastrophe. My personal tank #217 had to be blown up at Danzig, and it held out until almost the end of the war."
      However, that doesn't mean that the allies have been completely defenseless when ever a Tiger or Tiger 2 started to pop up. Particularly once they spotted the enemy vehicle.

      Building the RFM Sturmtiger with interior. It has mobile pully to the rear. This can swing from left to right and two hooks up front. To load a shell, chains and cables would be attached to the rear pully. This would be swung to either left or right to grab a shell by the rear and swing it first onto the loading tray. The front is held by the two hooks near the breech. Once the rear is onto the tray, the front is then slowly winch to place. Afterwards, the chains and cables are put away, a huge hand crank would be attached to the rear to literally crank the shell into the breech.

    Wonder what kind of combat team you would build around this? Would it consist of a platoon of 3, or a demolition team of 2? Would you have a full platoon of infantry to support and protect them, or a full company? Would you have regular tanks such as the PZKW IV tasked to support them as well? I'm guessing the employment of the Brumbar in Stalingrad might give us some idea.

    This kind of vehicle is possible only with good logistics and air superiority.
    Only rich countries can afford this kind of beasts.
    I usually imagine KV2 in city support role for infantry, for example I imagine 1 shipped to Stalingrad.
    The Germans occupied one building block and beside it have dug in Pak 37 and Panzer 3 for support of infantry.
    KV2 follows Soviet infantry which is pinned down by superior enfilading German fire. Then KV2 steps into the middle of boulevard bouncing Pz 3's and Pak's rounds, and also a few shots from German anti-tank rifles, stops, steadily aims at the base of the German occupied building, fires and the whole one side of the building collapses on the Pak 37, along with German soldiers from the building who fall in slow motion intertwined with rabble and dust.
    Then KV2 aims at the opposite side of building block, at the dug in Pz 3, fires and same as in Men of War game series obliterates the tank with its massive 152 mm howitzer.
    Standing proudly at the middle of the street without any cover KV2 delivers few more shots and the Soviet infantry resumes attack and takes the building block.
    Now imagine same with Sturmtiger in Warsaw uprising. I am still curious, if the action becomes ever confirmed, how did Sturmtiger fucked 3 M4s? I suppose they were stationary and supporting infantry when arty spotters spotted them and ordered a fire mission for Sturmtiger. He then fired a shot and with the blast wrecked the poor bastards in 63 mil armor.
    The crater must have been humongous. Petersburg like.

    • @jackofshadows8538
      @jackofshadows8538 6 років тому

      Sadly, the KV2 topples on its side after turning its gun to be at a right angle to the hull after destroying one PzIII and other PzIIIs pummel the thin under armour and it explodes, taking several hundred nearby Soviet Infantry as the huge 150mm charges are easily ignited.
      Luckily the crew all survived but were sent to Siberia as punishment for ruining a perfectly fine tank with stupidity.
