- Hetzers gonna Hetz!
We are back with the second episode of the Inside the Tanks, filmed at The Deutsches Panzermuseum, Munster.
The Jagdpanzer 38(t), better known as Hetzer was a German light tank destroyer of the Second World War based on a modified Czechoslovakian Panzer 38(t) chassi. The project was inspired by the Romanian "Mareşal" tank destroyer.

Having driven the Hetzer, I am constantly amazed how everyone raves about what a superb vehicle it is. I asked a Hetzer veteran what was the best thing about the Hetzer he operated. His reply, 'it was warm inside during the winter of 1944/5'.
Operating the Hetzer in heavy rain across open fields is no joke. As a driver, you cannot see outside the tank because the rain obscures the vision blocks. Inside, the condensation from the engine and the crew's bodies steams up the vision blocks too. The inside walls run with condensation and the rain comes through the roof thanks to the sliding plate around the periscope. If the commander's hatch is open, the rain pours in here also. The floor is several centimetres deep in rain water and mud from the crew's boots add to the general air of misery inside.
Outside, in muddy conditions, the mud collects between the drive sprocket and the hull and slows the vehicle almost to a halt. I am not talking several kilometres here, only a couple of hundred metres. In poor conditions, the sloped hull is very slippery especially when muddy. No one ever mentions the fierce clutch either, which makes the Hetzer such a pig to drive.
I have driven most WWII Allied armoured vehicles from Valentine to IS-3, as well as Marder III and Stug III and while the Hetzer may look great, I can assure you it isn't great to operate in poor weather.
Any more info? I'm trying to collect as much info on the Hetzer as possible for my current project, there isn't much in the way of combat/crew records floating around.
All I can tell you about the Hetzer vet was that he was posted to a unit where new Hetzers were being delivered and he helped to unload them. Some weeks later, he was posted to another unit as an instructor on the Hetzer! Obviously, times were getting desperate in late 1944.
I can't help you with any more info except to say I have owned two Hetzer and a Stug III plus driven a Marder III. Both the Stug and the Marder were easier vehicles to drive.
I have heard that Hetzer crews weren't exactly elite, but that is something new all together! Thanks for info mate, I really appreciate it.
>>If the commander's hatch is open, the rain pours in here also
Panzerjaeger 'It was warm in the winter.' Im dead lmao
Its incredible that there were men who actually fought and died inside of these tanks.
yep
friendlywhiteguy well why isn't it incredible people were in other tanks?
I meant all tanks in ww2.
friendlywhiteguy oh, okay sorry
Mostly died, but why argue semantics. WarGaming has done a good job of sensationalizing what were essentially steel coffins with guns. Most tank crews never came back.
You forgot the bit where some of these were built with flamethrowers.
what?
Marek Lahovský yyyyep. some had flamethrowers, not guns.
I never heared aboud any German vehicle with a flamethower but im not expert .
+Marek Lahovský battle of the bulge. Accounts and records say hetzers were equipped with flame throwers.
^^^
This is still my favorite tank destroyer.
same here..one of my 3 favs
JagdPanther is my favorite by far
stll better than the StuGIII
Jagdpanzer e100
@@woogangamadeusmozart3642 Jagdtiger.
And an IS2 at 100m
In WoT that's another story
premium ammo, noob.
@Marshall Eastwood It was better than Tiger 1 and 2 in every single aspect then?
@Marshall Eastwood Obviously not.
I think is insane how this little tank can do something like that against an IS-2
@@happymoon8471 imagine if it would have the armor of a tiger
The deadly little Hetzer.
ltuPlayer564 you are wrong
ItuPlayer564 you mean in WoT, perhaps.
ltuPlayer564 nope

one of the most OP tanks on tier IV, The Hetzer

On the American line? American TD's are pretty good as well.

And I still suck in it. :D
I mean 105 mm on tier 4? are you serious? It can one-shot light tanks with it's he and HEAT

3years ago...sorryz😨
I feel somewhat reassured to learn I am not the only person with this problem. 😳
To me the Hetzer was the armies equivalent to the navies "Pocket Battleship".
Small, compact and hard hitting!
Thanks Richard for another insightful look at another great little AFV!
Pocket battleships (heavy cruisers with upgraded main guns and engine, designed to stretch the Treaty of Versailles) are still very large compared to most ships. The Hetzer is not large compared to most AFVs.
lol
The Hetzer was more like the converted fishing vessels the Kriegsmarine used for cutters.
The German pocket battleships were slower than most cruisers, and only a bit faster than WWI battleships.
Cute small beast :)
Thanks for the history lesson. It's such a beautiful tank! So well build. It's amazing. Those Germans sure knew what they where doing.
Let's not forget that the bottom half was Czech.
+evilassaultweaponeer Do you mean the Czechs helped design it??
Luffy MonkeyD The Panzer 38t was a captured Czech type which was employed by the Germans early in the war. The Hetzer is a 38t with the top of the chassis and turret replaced.
+evilassaultweaponeer Wow, I see. Interesting.
I wish I could build that but I love this
I visited this museum half a year ago. It is truely amazing
These videos are getting better every time! Thanks for producing them!
A small correction:
the Czechoslovak military designation was LT vz. 38 (Lehký tank vzor 38, Light Tank model 38).
Many thanks for the exciting detail about how these vehicles operated--your knowledge is appreciated, as part of a 4 man crew in a conflict situation the circumstances must have been horrendous.
Thank you for a super production.
Wargaming Europe Love how you learn so much about tanks and do all the research, yet in game, so unrealistic.
Great report...thank you.
Have long liked this little tank destroyer, but had never got a good look at one..until now.
Gracias por los subtitulos. Gracias a ellos pones al alcance de muchas personas éstos interesantes documentales.
Wow. Made me shiver when I saw how cramped the inside was and imagining the armour being hit and penetrated...
incredible, how well the insides look, considering its age.....
if you compare this to some other tanks from these series, its a difference of night and day
The "marder III" at 1:03 is actually a Marder II. Great video and overview, thank you.
amazing video! The Hetzer is actually my favorite vehicle on wheels from WWII
It is great to see, that someone has made a documantary about World of tanks...Great job, guys!
Very good review of this AFV, wish the review had been longer though.
Very cool. Please do more of these!
Hetzer gunna hetz?
Props to you wargaming!
You do some stuff that annoys us, but this series is amazing!
Thank you !
Outstanding video and presentation.
It is hard to believe that four guys had to die in here.
Thank you! A very interesting historical background to this little giant-killer; making the best of what they had so late in the war. Particularly liked the diagrams and interior shots which very simply and clearly explained what you cannot get from a museum walk round and the data card. Thanks for your time and effort to produce this - I have now subscribed and look forward to more.
Outstanding, a very professional and informative piece.
Very interesting series. Please more episodes! There is still so much of the same tanks of World War 2 to the show!
knocking out IS2......would like to see it in WoT
+Sebastian Gniadek If they will make it able to penetrate IS2 like in real life, it will be not able to be in tier IV anymore.. :P
Most likely the Hetzer had good cover and waited in ambush while the IS2 gave it a clear shot of its side. That kind of situation doesn't really happen in WOT as battles on WOT tends to be a poorly organized and chaotic melee during which the camo and spotting mechanics don't correlate well with real life. But the 7.5cm l/48 shooting AP should be able to pen an IS2's side in real life and in game. And obviously in real life a pen usually means a kill like the way it works in War Thunder...
Sebastian Gniadek War Thunder ftw if you wanna do that
It was spamming HE and the is2 wasn’t letting its aim settle
Play Warthunder bro much better some aspects are still arcady tho
I do not know how true to form World of Tanks actually is, however, concerning the in-game Hetzer, it is definitely a very special tank, being the one and only tank that regularly sees games where its driver manages to destroy all other fifteen tanks.
It does not happen often, however, for many tanks this level of glory has never ever taken place, even under the command of the finest player in the world - and therefore, obviously, I take note of that, and I keep a keen eye on the little piece, with me actually not yet managing to take the piece out of my own garage for a spin.
Peace!
Love the videos!
What a great video on this machine, loved it.
I like the amount of details of the gun ! Awesome vid
I love these videos!
Hetzers gonna Hetz
I was in a game playing the hetzer, then I opened UA-cam when it was loading, and this was first on the recommended page. Perfect timing
i love the design of the hetzer, the slope of it is amazing
1:48 damn look at all those marks of excellence
I was in the Panzermuseum Munster! :D (I'm from Germany) ^^
I was there during my recent visit to Germany. Was the best part of my visit!

Great job describing this vehicle. Thanks!
Always been one of my favorites just didn't realize how small they were it's great that there are survivors to look at and climb on I'm a subscriber now not as a gamer but as a historical modeler.
Still my favourite TD of the game :-)
I love it, can play how ever I want when I want.
So slow with stock engine. By the time I got anywhere the battle was decided.
Yeah, it is rubbish when stock lol. Pretty quick though once it's fully maxed out
I like using my hetzer in city maps (yes I am weird). It's really like a turtle with it's bad acceleration (top speed is around 40 though). I just use the howitzer and strengthened my tracks, it can easily keep up with light tanks circling around it.
+HeliRy Yea the Hetzer is very good but my fav was the Stug III.
Dear Wargaming, Please do an inside look at the 38(t) please! I promise to become a premium member if you do.
Wabaanimkii hahaha there is a nice video of a Pz 38t N/A, it's Russian with English subtitles. nice little scout tank but way too underpowered in wot. In wot you have to play very sneakily with it as it has a horrible cannon and very thin armor, it was also pretty alow for a scout and often became an easy target if spotted.
I've been trying to find one with subs but havent found a single good one. There is one video that I quite like, but it has no captions available.
I play the second version of the 38t in War Thunder and its an absolute monster when played right. Best uphill performance in the game, decent acceleration, not bad turning and overall a pleasurable drive. So long as i dont fight T-34's my life is happy.
just type in the youtube search Chieftan 38t in part 2 he shows you the inside.
You do a really good job mate , great videos thankyou.
excellent idea for a series.
my favorite
certified tutel moment.
I loved that museum! Only went for the Tiger didnt know what awesome gems of tanks were there. Great museum
As always real informative, that's a sweet tank
I love the hetzer I remember a time when my team died early and I took out the entire enemy team with it man hetzer also shout out to all the German td players there aren’t much like myself
I wish these videos were in game.
These vids are excellent. Thanks.
And to add to the Flamethrower version there was an upgunned prototype version of the Hetzer which housed the same gun as the Panther.
The Pz38 75mm L70.
Hetzer means chaser or rabble rouser in English. When I was a kid in Scotland we used to play chases and the person chasing was "het".
hetzer gonna hetz you little boy ahahah
“It’s fast, hard to spot, and even harder to hit”.
E25: am I a joke to u
well E25 never built
Wot hmm
The hezter. Nicknamed “The Trapezoid” By me
A little big surprise!
Love this series!
Nice review. Great.
I want to play my Hetzer now.
Good luck on killing a tier IV with 30 dmg
@@dogo7543 the hetzer deals 100dmg wdym
Yea, Hetzer could knock out IS2, now go try that in WOT ... you will have a hard time even against kv1
lol so you think war gaming tell the true?
no, i killed some kv1s with hetzer.
Alex Missio
go 1vs 1 from full hp and then talk you fucking shit
Da Cat if you not a total fucking dumbass, you can win
+Da Cat I can win because I shoot on the sides of the kv1 that are shitty.
Hetzer is the bane of my tier 4 existence
Relatable
As a kid ,I saw a G-13 in Switzerland ... 40 years later it is still my favourite tank design :)
There is one at the Waffenplatz in Thun. I used to be a Panzergrenadier there and probably saw it a few times. I wish I knew more about all the old tanks when I was there because they have quite a collection.
1:29 "Im already Tracer"
Wow , i want to work for Wargaming to , i want to go inside tanks ! xD
DerpSparky I have no penis ...
Centauri wtf?
Totally impressive and incredible tanks are just amazing video
I love to watch ur videos
I get deep knowledge of tanks through it
Could you have a look inside a Tiger II while you're in Germany? The Tiger I was so fantastic, I really want to know how the design was improved for the next version. Thanks. Keep up your great videos!
Tiger II is actually in the same building
the Tiger 2 in Munster is a empty hull... if u want to see a fully operational Tiger 2 u have to go to Saumur France
nagmashot a muesm in england has a woking tiger tank
That's a Tiger I in bovington not tiger II
By all means Tiger 2 was an absolute downgrade from Tiger 1, it's thicker and more slopped armor was a rubbish quality, it was way too heavy and absolutely unreliable.
I got the 10.5 for my Hetzer 2 days ago :)
Nico RosbergFan Ahh the Derp Gun ;) Always shoot HE to make damage, even when you dont penetrate tha amor
Hauptfeldwebel Neo ! Yes I loved this gun, even more on the Pz IV H
nice video my favorite tank destroyer is the hetzer
I have been there, great collection, replica A7V.
Do more please, I enjoy you much more than chieftain!
The "Hetzer" name was a post-war designation, and was never actually called that by either side in the war.
Even tho the nashorn was a slow big box brute that gun was a force to be reckon with that thing was a absolute tank destroyer for sure
These destroyers have a special place in my heart.
i love my hetzer : )
Hetzers gonna hetz.
This Video is one of the best videos in world
wie geil. die temperaturanzeige vom kühlwasser wird heute noch verbaut . sehr nice
Why they didnt put the commander in the loader place and the loader behing the gun, he would have an easier way to load and get the ammo.
+Argentvs commander's equipment was located at commander's seat
DamnedUsernameThing What?.
Argentvs If the loader sat in the commander's seat, the commander wouldn't be able to use his periscope or his hatch
DamnedUsernameThing Dude... thats stupid...
When i said why they put the ocmmander there i was talking about the designers... If they placed the commander in the other place all the commander elements would be in that other place too...
Argentvs The chasis was taken from the Pz. 38t, which might have something to do with the placement of the commander's seat.
Either way though, even if the loader's seat was in place of the commander's seat, the problem would not be solved. Rounds were mounted on both sides of the interior, so even if he switched spots with the commander, the loader would still have to reach over to get the rounds.
why is the dirver allways on the left side (inside the tank) especially in this situation, why did not they desing it to driver sit on the right and the gun would be mounted to the left so the loader would have easier relload
then the problem is still there cus you switch places
do you think driving, shooting, and reloading is easy? if the tank is moving and the person inside the tank loading the gun, then the tank will crashed thats why
just guessing on this but since most people are right handed, it's much easier to operate the gun ( aiming, loading and so forth )...since the whole point of the machine is to fire shells at and faster than the other guy, it would seem natural to start from that point when laying out your interior
plus, just like the towers on aircraft carriers are on the right hand side because people have a penchant to break left, it seem natural to me
granted, this is all from a laymans point of view
The Hetzer had to be designed quickly using an existing vehicle. Engineering is always having to make compromises and trying to place a large gun in a very small vehicle requires a lot of compromises. .
The British built the first aircraft carrier with an Island, which was on the right side, followed by Japan then the US who followed the British lead. Britain and Japan both drive on the left side of the road. Should Nations who drive on the right have built their carriers with the Island on the left?
binaway .....the island on carriers is on the starboard side due to pilots tendancies to "break" hard left in propeller driven aircraft days
the japanese did build two carries with there islands on the port side but it was an experiment that didn't go past that, since then it's become jet power and now it's tradition
Well-made video!
the CAP in the APCBC (Armour Piercing Caped Ballistic Caped) was soft to protect the hardened Penetrator.
Pz 38 t ( Lt. Vz. 38 ) was a light tank! not medium
It depends, at the time of its development it might have passed as a Medium tank since the parameters were different for each country. Though CSR designated as LT vz 38 = (Light tank mark 38), german designation doesnt make it obvious how it was classified by Wermacht and of course for other Axis power 38t might have actually been designated as a medium (though this is just an assumption of mine). For example Pershing was a heavy tank, but it is present in WOT in a medium tech tree (since it fits there...kinda)...
dont use wot tech tree as completely true classification
There are certain discrepancies regarding historical classification of the said vehicle.
It was designed to serve in a light/medium tank role, and when it was designed the parameters for classifications were fairly different that those of War era, as well as those parameters differing from country to country. So lets say no one is wrong in this case :) ~Hunter1911
at this tme it was a Medium, a Pz4 was a heavy tank.
JadigertheReal The Panzer 4 was only classified as a heavy in Hungary.
Hetzer gonna hetz
"This vechicle was really fast compared to the other tanks"
Wg: best I can do is 9 km/h
*THANK YOU!*
Hetzers gonna hetz
Hetzie betzie
Very informative, thank you!
The hetzer is one of my favourite tank destroyers maybe even my most favourite, along with the USSR. SU and ISU series. Keep it up wargaming and pls do one of the SU-100
Hetzer is my all time favorite tank in W.O.T.
It looks to me like they de-buffed it in game a little.
well its end of war design crushing noobs in pre/early war designed tanks,.. of course its overpowered,... but still i have no idea where crew is if 105mm is mounted,..
Hmm, the entire German war effort can be summed up as too little too late really despite some damn good ideas like this here Hetzer. Then again we all should be glad it can be summed up as such.
+clothar23 Lol, you must be joking at the beginning of the WW2 the German weapons were better in almost every aspects than their counterparts. The tanks were an exception but only Russians had them. Planes, Handweapons, Submarines, Rockets were all dominated by the Germans. SG44, V2, German submarines were the best, Russians take them home after WW2 and used them to design their own. Hitlers most idiotic mistake was fighting the whole world at once, if he went only against Soviets he probably would have won. When Nazis came to Ukraine, Ukrainians welcome them as their saviors. They loved their Russian (Soviet) brothers so much, especially after the artificial famine caused by Stalin which killed more than 7 millions Ukrainians.
+ElJackale Really, Let's see the M1 Garand was a better rifle then the Mauser 98k, The bazooka was a better infantry anti tank weapon. The Shermans were a better tank then the Panzer IVs, and the E8 and E6 models of the Shermans could punch holes even into the best German Tanks. The T34 series were a better tank then anything the Germans built save the Tiger series of tanks. And the IS series of tanks could wipe the floor with the German tank core.
Face it mate the Germans were undergunned, outfought, and in the end out produced. Only the most arduous Neo-Nazis think otherwise. Did they have some good ideas sure but drawings on paper don't win wars. .
***** Ah yes the ME 262, the world's first operational Jet powered fighter craft.. Was it ahead of it's time yes. But like everything Nazi made it was overdesigned, wasn't built in great enough numbers. And numerous maintenance and performance issues plagued it from day one to last day.
Basically the same issue pretty much every Nazi thing ever built suffered from.
***** Oh did I make a mistake mate. Germany at the time was under the rule of the National Socialist party shortened to Nazi by pretty much everyone. Unlike some people I prefer to make the distinction between Germany as it is now and was then.
clothar23 So, you're suggesting that if Hitler had had the patience to wait til better weapons were ready, he might have fared better? One thing that fits this narrative is tanks, I keep hearing the Germans were surprised by the T-34 and KV-1. Let's assume they'd found out about them long enough before Barbarossa to design, build and deploy heavy tanks. And the extra time would have benefited the Kriegsmarine as well, and probably the Luftwaffe.
I've been inside one of these twice. awesome little vehicle.
always fun to see the real deal
Yay, it was inspired from a Romanian tank? :D
Actually, yes. It was inspired by the Maresal tank destroyer which was developed in 1942-1943,but due to the lack of funds it was cancelled by the romanian army. But the germans liked the idea and continued a similar program to create the Hetzer
Actually, that's false. Development of the Maresal was never discontinued. 200 Maresal M-05s were placed for order and other 800 Maresal M-06 would replace the the M-05.
However, defection of Romania in 1944 ruined that prospect along with other projects.
“Hetzer is also known as Chaser”
No wonder its nicknamed the cockroach
It's probably because it looks like one
That´s not quite the correct translation.
Chaser would be "Verfolger" back-translated into german.
The word "Hetzer" has an additonial meaning in it: it indeed means to chase something or someone, but to a further extent in which the chased thing/person is almost close to a breakdown because of exhaustion.
Kênh hay quá ... giờ mới biết có viêtsub. Trước nghĩ là k có . Thế là đăng kí liền... thanks ad.
according to my book"weapons of war" the tank that the Hetzer is based on is the Czech-designed LTvz-38.When it became out classed as a tank (it only mounted a 37.2mm Skoda A7 gun, with 10-25mm of armour) ,the chassis was used for the tank destroyer 'Hetzer'. A well sloped armour casement was built up(10-60mm) and the German pak39 75mm gun was mounted along with the
MG34. 1577 were built. the Hetzer"was a tremendous success." After ww2 the Czech army took over production and exports were still in service with the Swiss army in the 1970's ! I hope this
clears up some of the confusion about the late great Hetzer.
