Seems to be a pretty straight-forward bug. Dying on the same frame that you hit a loading zone puts the player in an immortal state. This isn't entirely uncommon in other games. Basically developers don't account for every single possibility of multiple events happening at the same.
It seems like this game (and the Contra game by M2) take good advantage of the YM2151 chip, that's why it sounds like Sunset Riders-ish, and also other Konami games from the era.

And yeah.....Why TF do all these games have Richter in them? This looks like a rondo of blood remake in every way. The gameplay is worse than Castlevania IV, and it's utterly abandoned it's original story and the Lord that made this the most epic game series in the first place.
