You can definitely train for athleticism. However, some people’s genetics on top of their training makes them untouchable. I.e. LeBron, Vince Carter, Dwight Howard.
That's not true. Isaiah Rivera went from a 24inch to a 50.5 inch vert from training. With hard work and dedication you can reach the elite level regardless of where you came from.
Athleticism is a spectrum. You can train to improve whatever athleticism you have (but only in small increments). Like you can always get faster (up to the limit). However, you can't go from being slow to being fast. If you''re slow, you can just work at being less slow.

It will help a little, but genetics and athletic ability is natural. There's a reason why there is a difference between pro athletes and others. Do you think others don't work hard at their game? The genetics separate the superiors from the average people. LeBron worked, but look at his genetics. How many athletes are like that not in the pros?
All of yall that are downplaying what training can do to your athleticism need to UA-cam the 30-40 yr old white guys that just started dunking in their 30s. It has a limit…. Those who make the biggest gains have the highest level of fast twitch muscle fibers to begin with along with long tendons. You’ll never see anyone fast, quick or explosive with long fat calf muscles and a short soleus
So simple! There are athletic people who don’t even play sports. Athleticism is a blessing that people don’t want to acknowledge. The people who DO acknowledge it, but train like they aren’t, are the ones who become greats 💪
athleticism is both genetics and environment. Both can exist. Some ppl are born with it and then work on top of it. That's the difference but hard work can certainly improve your athletic abilities.
Being athletic is more than just jumping. Speed, quickness, fast twitch muscles, movements etc. Most are born being a natural athlete. Some can get better, quicker etc
not really, just like all athletic attributes like strength they can be increased, half of those skills is coordination, most fast runners dont have a good running stride but with practice they can run under 10 secs
@@younglove3362 Yes, the science in body improvement got better, but all that is limited by your genetics. If the genetic hard limit did not exist, all the nba players not a big man should have a 40" vert already because these NBA players work out hard and often.
@badxgrass has nothing to do with science. It's just certain exercises. You have to be physically fit to be in the NBA. Otherwise, it's no place for you. And one of the contributions of being physically fit is jumping. That's why even 5 foot players can dunk. Practice and exercises are what does it.
Genetics do play a role in being more athletic than another but you can work on improving your mechanics as being more athletic if you're not a freakish athlete.
Athleticism is just potential. To reach the ceiling, the top of your potential, takes training Focus commitment yada yada yada. Like any natural born Talent, athleticism is elevated significantly but effort and hard work. You may not be able to be the best but being your best usually levels of playing field. You may not be able to jump higher but you could jump just as high for longer. Very few people even in professional sports the peak of their potential.
Kenyon and Gil right! When I graduated high school I had a 38 inch vertical at 6’5 senior year. Never lifted a weight in my life, only dunked and played 5 on 5. If I would have lifted I could have had at least 42+ vertical. Genetics matter, my dad could jump high according to all my family.
LOL - Kenyon, Nick and Gil are wearing the hair! Love it! AND they know how to shake the hair as well. True Baddies🤣 Everyone's costumes are fabulous! Good job podcast.
Not saying that😂😂 theyre sayin your body has a limit that you can never overextend. Ja cant squat like most dudes in the league but has more bounce than them all. Same with big dudes. No matter how hard jokic train jumping he will never get a 40 inch vert
@@11bornrich - What they're trying to say is there's nothing you can do to change your ceiling. A player can always get a little better, but not by a lot
Just realize that some have to work harder than others to get to different levels... period. I was the most athletic I've ever been when I trained for football. I went from squeezing in dunks to elbow at the rim.
KneesOverToesGuy is a living example with documented evidence that you can significantly increase your vertical. Dude didn't start dunking until his 30's DESPITE playing basketball up to the college level, so it wasnt like he wasn't working out already...he just started doing very targeted workouts and boom. There are also several other youtubers that documented themselves following his program and increasing their verticals 7+ inches in their 30's. This automatically throws out Kenyon's claims of only being able to add 5 inches max to your vert. There is a genetic max, but I think it's far higher than what Gil and Kenyon are saying.
K MArt is wrong, you can train to be faster, jump higher, be more agile etc... Are some people more naturally more athletic? Yes. Could other have a higher ceiling? Sure. But that doesn't change the fact that you can definitely do certain workouts, drills etc... to be more athletic. I think they're confusing having a cap with being able to become more athletic. Yes, everyone has a limit, that doesn't mean they can't become more athletic though. There's always a balance & counter for everything in life, if you can become less athletic, you can be more athletic
@@11bornrichdo you get the point that they were trying to convey. As much as you can train, the genes are the biggest factor to athleticism. Working out is maintaining & progressing the level of athleticism. If you think you can just train to be faster/ jump higher, you can but very limited due to genetics.
@@cravenmoorehead6265 "Very limited" is the issue I have. It's not "very limited" it's simply limited. Your comment assumes or follows the premise that we're all starting from the same place. Some people are close to their peak while others aren't. In fact, studies show that most of us are EXTREMELY far away from our peak potential & need significant relentless training to reach it so the idea that training would only have a small or very limited improvement isn't necessarily true. There's a genetic range, genetics simply provides a baseline but not a starting point. For example, I've trained with guys that spent years training and only managed to increase their vert by 8-10% & I say "only" but if you have a 40 inch vert that's + 4inches. I've also trained with guys doing plyometric and strength training and personally I and others have had 20-35% increases in our vert. That's a huge increase, and that's just vert. Now imagine if you're overweight, that easily shoots up to 40%+ when measuring current ability to reaching your full genetic range.
Athleticism isn't a skill its an attribute. There is a cap to that attribute for everyone. However the cap is also different for everyone. I'm 5"8 and i could dunk at 16. A lot of dudes 6"0-6"3 are under the rim. If they train they can dunk. But never like someone athletic of their size. You see you can learn plyometrics but some niggas don't even have to bro they just jump. So basically its a skill up to a certain point. Its like defense. After the fundamentals & the schemes...you can't learn to be a pest. A diver. A problem. Its all experience and wantimg to stop dudes even at the cost of your body taking crazy hits. Shout out to small guards eating triple screens for dinner
For anyone reading, athleticism absolutely can be taught. There are some people who are able to develop their athleticism naturally. But you can definitely develop it over time. Obviously, everyone has a cap and I'm not saying everyone can be as fast as the fastest person. Hell, basic linear periodization is the foundation of strength and conditioning and that has been effective and around for over half a century.
That’s what Gil and Kenyon saying the engine is the genes you can tune it that’s training But the guy who’s the fastest in the world got a different engine than the rest of us. Even if we all did his training we wouldn’t be as fast as him
Athleticism is a skill under the lens of kinesiology. You can train to jump higher, run faster, hit harder, but you can't train to be genetically taller, have wider and longer limbs, or have bigger hands and feet. There are other intricacies like the amount of torque you can generate through the specific anatomical structures like your patella. hip joint, etc. The other huge factor is how your body is socially constructed. Did you grow up in the hood? Did you grow up being spoonfed your whole life? Were all your childhood friends athletes? What did you eat growing up? Not saying that these are the complete truths to why Jordan's offspring couldn't hoop, but it's worth mentioning for it possibly being a reason.

Kenyon and Gil are absolutely right! Athleticism is mostly genetics and no amount of training can increase your vertical jump from like 36 to a 40. At best there's a one or two each gain. I recommend everyone in the comments to watch Jmxhighroller's latest video here on UA-cam comparing the athleticism of modern NBA players to those from the 90s. He used real data for his analysis and discovered rhat modern athletes are only about 3-6% more athletic using NBA combine stats over the past 30 years. The only difference now is that modern technology and training makes the athletes today look better, they aren't more athletic.
athleticism is an attribute but it CAN be acquired... some people don't have to work as hard to get it but it doesn't mean it's unattainable for people who put in the work...

Skills that can be improved are usually tactile thru hand/eye coordination drilling but it also can be a talent as some people have more of a natural affinity performing in the particular circumstance(feel for the game).
And if there is a guy genetically superior to you, it would take him less time to learn. Look at Giannis. His rookie season, he could barely play basketball. There’s a high demand for skill development in players’ training focused on athleticism. If contracts included bonuses for improving vertical jump and 3/4 court sprint times, you’d likely see more players prioritizing that training. You see pro dunkers in mid 20s to early 30s constantly improving their vertical because their priority is to win dunk contests.

You can definitely train for athleticism. However, some people’s genetics on top of their training makes them untouchable. I.e. LeBron, Vince Carter, Dwight Howard.

They document the whole process and all the training they do as 5’10 middle age white men with 15inch verts then a couple years later they are doing windmills. Being athletic is more than just jumping. Speed, quickness, fast twitch muscles, movements etc. Most are born being a natural athlete. Some can get better, quicker etc
@Gil’s Arena. Y’all costumes are off the chain. 👏🏾👏🏾
Speed agility jumping are attributes. Ball handling rebounding passing dunking defense are skills lol
To an extent. Everyone in the NBA can dunk. I guarantee you that wasn't the case before hand. There's ways to increase your jumping.
not really, just like all athletic attributes like strength they can be increased, half of those skills is coordination, most fast runners dont have a good running stride but with practice they can run under 10 secs
@@younglove3362 Yes, the science in body improvement got better, but all that is limited by your genetics. If the genetic hard limit did not exist, all the nba players not a big man should have a 40" vert already because these NBA players work out hard and often.
@badxgrass
has nothing to do with science.
Abilities are natural, skills are learned. Athleticism is an ability.
Athleticism is just potential. To reach the ceiling, the top of your potential, takes training Focus commitment yada yada yada.
You can't become more athletic than your limit. The players in the NBA reached their limits their genetics would allowed them to reach.
True but genetics will still be the main factor on how much you can progress.
@@DUBBleVizion422 You're right but the keyword is "progress" meaning you can develop to an improved or advanced condition.
If u can get better at something that means you worked on it, it doesn’t mean you’ll be the best at it but you’ll better at it..

Y’all remind me of debates we used to have at our high school lunch tables. Everyone just talking over each other 😂
Athleticism isn't a skill its an attribute.
Good to see Gil’s arena is still erupting.
For anyone reading, athleticism absolutely can be taught. There are some people who are able to develop their athleticism naturally. But you can definitely develop it over time.
Obviously, everyone has a cap and I'm not saying everyone can be as fast as the fastest person.
Hell, basic linear periodization is the foundation of strength and conditioning and that has been effective and around for over half a century.
agree, sadly this falls on the deaf ears of many.
That’s what Gil and Kenyon saying the engine is the genes you can tune it that’s training
But the guy who’s the fastest in the world got a different engine than the rest of us.
