Agate hunting in the Hinds River - New Zealand

- We managed to find some nice agates and bits of chalcedony in spite of the amount of snow on the ground which really limited the amount of ground we could inspect. I really need a pair of waders as the rivers were too deep for my gum boots - my feet were freezing! Don't think I got frostbite but sure felt like it was close.
This was at the Hinds River, Canterbury.

The big amygdaloidal basalt with agates is fabulous, would make lovely slabs! I am surprised you didn't get frostbite.
Hahhaah my feet were so cold! I need to find that rock again now that I have a rock saw!

He is South African.If it is really cold the guys double up and wear two sets of short pants on top of each other.
Would have been very tempted to take the entire rock with the agates wearing out of it, sometimes. X) Good on you for resisting the temptation.

G’day lads.if you are going thru Mayfield ask for mick with the agates.i will show you 40 odd year of collecting agates from around mid Canterbury.i might even point you in a few directions😊👍🏻good job but ya went in the only snow we had all year!!some of the nicest agates in nz are from round here.cheers

Hi Sarah, it's quite high up into the Hinds River, where it starts getting to the hills. I honestly can't remember the road we parked on, but it was a dirt road with a bridge.
