You and me both. When I watch this channel, I get a sense of wonderment, but also a sense of melancholy at the realization that I have been nothing more than a bystander to life. 😑
I don't understand how someone can claim they are a bystander and not living life. Perhaps there's something else going on in your life that makes you feel that way and others don'tt understand. But realize if you're able to take a walk through the forest, feel the light of the morning sun, plant a tree where it can grow, you're still alive and living life.
Van is like an awesome Uncle we didn't know we needed. Stress and anxiety melts away after 10 seconds into his videos. Thank you so much Van... we are forever thankful for your uploads.
At first I gave this a follow because of Casey and I liked the trailer for the channel. I walked away from it for sometime but I gave it a chance again recently and now I'm truly enjoying your content. I love the originality, uniqueness and individual style of Van. Thank you.
Holy shit Van. I felt transported in to another time. Good god man. Friendships that last continents and decades are priceless. My dad told me a few years back that if i had enough friends to count on 1 hand when i got to his age that i would be lucky. Now I turn 32 in about a week and I am already realizing why he said that. Thank you for preserving an older style of story telling. I can't really put it in to words but I can feel it. We live in a crazy world. I hope you get to go see your friend.
What the hell is it with these videos... virtually no other films give me literal goosebumps and have me sitting here grinning from ear to ear like an idiot.
Neat to hear a Fatu Hiva story this week. I was supposed to be visiting there on a boat a few days ago, but the trip was cancelled a month ago due to new covid entry requirements.
Van, this is your greatest productions to date. I believe this may be one of the most valuable videos available to human kind up till now. You must find her, you must.
In the '70's I was surrounded by people like this...making little films, writing scripts, living in Topanga Canyon and other remote locations with and without electricity, preaching "commune," surviving without "jobs," etc., traveling around the world, getting together for various reasons or no reason at all...there's a very insubstantial aspect to all of it, to all of "this" that to-date, 5.6K viewers are unaware of. This isn't a negative comment, it's just an experiential observation. And, of course, I also click the "Thumbs Up" button.
@conrad so perfectly stated. When I was young, fresh in from the country, it seemed to be an enviable lifestyle. Everybody knew famous people and went to famous people's events and homes. But now, I'm retired with a great pension and yet I also followed my artistic bents to the max. My entire life seems to me to be more solid than theirs ever was. I was trying to be me, they were trying to be "Somebody." Funny thing is, I retired out of the Movie Business, a place they all wanted to be. Life is cosmically funny.
Sailors are kinda free minded people. Some just sell everything else than their sail boat and go see the world. I try also travel (when I can) with no plans and free mindset. My path goes to where wind blows and nose points.
This series feels like it would usually be found within a quiet gallery somewhere. Grateful for the accessibility and your work in story telling. Curious if you'll be moving toward interviews within this body of work. Would love to hear more from Chloe and other spirited friends along the way.
I am 24 years old and feel Van's videos have no target audience as everyone can enjoy his content. There is something to take away from every video. I started with Casey and now suggest both brothers videos to everyone when talking about youtube. Also my first ever youtube comment. Thank you Van
My friend if your listening to Van or Casey at your age....you have a wonderful life ahead of you. I'll be sixty in a cpl weeks. I wish I had this kind of inspiration when I was your age. Go out, dream big and what the hell, fail at something just for the experience. Best of wishes to you
23 here, been watching Casey since 15 and now witnessing his brother’s works… These two are truly amazing. I also recommend them to my friends (despite their often uninterested reactions, sadly…). Casey is full of cheerful and always-moving energy. Van is more slow-paced, thought provoking…almost meditative. Two inspiring spirited men of this world. 👏
Your videos have restored my faith in contemporary creators and storytellers of this platform. I have consumed UA-cam content intensively for about 15 years. This is my first comment ever. Greetings from Finland.
I want the full Chloe story. How does someone afford to travel in perpetuity? How does someone learn the skills needed to sail across the world? When I see videos like this I'm excited to travel and go exploring, but Im also sobered to the real world and it's constraints. That life style must be incredibly difficult to achieve.
I must admit that I was a bit surprised when I walked along the local beach near my apartment in Copenhagen (Denmark) and saw a dude with spirited man sweatshirt. Van seems to have become a global phenomenon quite fast :-D Congrats
After picking up my jaw from the floor, and wiping the tears from my eyes I realized that not only are you one incredibly talented spirited man, but I thank you from the bottom of my heart for expanding my mind after watching this video. Inspiring.
I want to make a "what makes a Spirited Man?" video, talking about people's traits I've seen in my life that I consider 'Spirited'. I think it would be great if a bunch of people did the same. Then we could collectively create a 'Spirited Man' guidebook and all live by these guides, thus making the world a more 'Spirited' place.
I think you´re missing the point. As I understand it, its just about doing what you think needs to be done, no matter what stands in the way of it. If it seems too big, do the next best thing, the next smallest, achievable step that will get you closer to your goal. Spirited in this context doesn´t mean being handy or creative or whatever. Spirited means doing what you think needs to be done and not asking for permission or waiting for a chance to do it.
Nine people have given this video a thumbs-down. It'd be interesting if UA-cam forced thumbs-downers to write a sentence or two outlining their reasoning. "I'm suffering from a lack of satisfaction in my life and this video really highlighted that for me so I wanted to strike out in some way, but leaving a negative comment would publicly reveal things about my life that I'd prefer to hide at all costs, so I took the path of least resistance and hit the thumbs-down button." Great video. I gave it a thumbs-up.
I have always felt that a good portion of these are accidental dislikes from their intention to "Like". Especially on a cell phone. The buttons are too close together.
Been on UA-cam since 2006. Watched them all, The smoshes, the Ray William Johnsons, The Roman Atwoods, Casey Neistats., Mr Beasts', Pewdiepies.. you name it... I have never seen any other channel like I do with Van's... I never lost an episode and I haven't even slightly disliked one moment of it all. Van Neistat is the biggest treasure this platform ever gave us!
It is 02:25 AM on this side of the planet and I have just seen your latest upload. Made me a bit pensive. I mean, in one of your videos there is a scene where you are on the floor and you shout in despair 'Why can't I do anything'... Well, there is one thing you can do, one thing that you do and that you do extremely well: You inspire.
Needs to be said: every video you release make my day better, I bet a lot of people feel like that. This episode actually felt very touching! Best story telling as usual. Shout out to that amazing spirited woman in the South Pacific even if it is once a year
Van, You are... very, very talented. When Casey introduced your videos to us, he said.... you were a better filmmaker then he was. I laughed. I LOVE Casey's videos (movies). Thought is was just a nice plug from a loving brother. WELL>>> Casey was correct! You are a better filmmaker. Thank you Van. I really enjoy your films. Peace & Love. : )

That first “Neistat Brothers” reunion collab video is gonna be crazy. They need to get together and just be the Coen Brothers of UA-cam already.
