Let’s see. Cosmopolis. Movie. The last DeLillo novel I really liked was Libra. A History Of Violence. Movie. Vince Locke’s art is amazing in the comic book, but Cronenberg makes the story sharper and deeper. Spider. Tie. Both versions excel in their different mediums. Crash. Ditto. M. Butterfly. Ditto. Naked Lunch. Incomparable. Dead Ringers. Movie. It’s sweatier and more visceral. The Fly. Movie. The original story is very dine but this may be Goldblum’s very best performance, and it is above all tragically sad. The Dead Zone. Book. Walken is very fine, but the story has depth, horror, and tragedy beyond what the film achieves.
Thank you mr Michael for your wonderful cultural literary channel. Happy Halloween season in advance. I did not send comments to you from long time . My favorite Cronenberg films tend to be the ones that are his original ideas, in particular The Brood and Videodrome, but Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch are right up there as well. Dead Ringers is a legitimate masterpiece with one of the most criminally underrated performances of all-time coming from Jeremy Irons. It's way better than the book, IMO. It's hard to call Naked Lunch an "adaptation" since I'm not sure a true adaptation of any kind is possible with that book. However, I don't think there's a filmmaker more intellectually equipped to deal with Burroughs than Cronenberg and I'm a fan of both the book and the film. I'm curious why these works were omitted from your video. I enjoy JG Ballard as an author but honestly preferred Cronenberg's Crash in many ways. Perhaps a reread of Ballard's novel would be insightful; after all, I've seen the film several times but have only read the book once. I'm surprised you didn't mention Croneberg's own novel, Consumed. Probably deserves a video of its own. Have you read it? Yours would be an interesting perspective!
@@Michael_Wertenberg Push that book up the list a bit; this video needs a part 2! Cronenberg is a unique filmmaker in that you can't fully appreciate him (IMO) without understanding his *literary* influences as opposed to his cinematic ones since there are so few of the latter.
Neglected to mention that Super-Cannes is my favourite Ballard novel, simply because it turned me onto him as a (thought-provoking/ disturbing author). Just by-the-by, do you at all enjoy David Lynch?
I love David Lynch. Haven't seen all of them, though. My favourites are Blue Velvet and Mullholland Drive. I even liked his adaptation of Dune. Hot take.
I'm a total Cronenberg nut! Have you checked out any of his son's films (e.g. Infinity Pool)? Anyway, great video. Not to "weird you out" or anything, but you popped up in one of my disordered dreams recently - you convinced me to have a Heineken with you in a pub... Take care and much love to Cat Von Z.
Having a beer in a pub would be nice. But I wouldn't suggest Heineken. Maybe something Belgie if they had it. My favourite is Leffe brune. The blonde is good too.
I have only seen the Fly. I love that movie! 😂🪰 Crash sounds intriguing. I remember hearing about it. Don't they bang in the car just to get banged by a car? 🤔😝
"This book can’t be made into a movie "
David: "This story would make a great movie!"
You missed Naked Lunch. I was looking forward to your take on the movie, and the book. Why you got to do me like that Michael?
Yep😁
@@BlueEyedMatt42 I'm sorry😔I haven't read that book. I did see the movie and liked it (though it would rank in the lower half of my DC ranking)
Cronenberg is my favorite director , I enjoyed this video very much 🩶
Thank you😁

Nice! You have read everything!😲We agree for the most part, but I haven't read The Dead Zone. Loved the movie as a kid, though
@@Michael_Wertenberg I didn’t read a lot of Cosmopolis. deLillo worked very efficiently to convince me I’d rather read something else.
Yes, make a Cronenberg ranking video. I'm partial to Cronenberg's early films.
Me too, although I quite liked his recent offering, Crimes of the Future

I'm with you, The Brood (and especially) Videodrome are on the top of my list as my favourites of his. I haven't read Consumed yet. It's on my TBR...

Concrete Island (J.G. Ballard).
100% agreement on the scene with the *implements*. Chanel (ChanelChapters) just reviewed crash.
I just read the blurb for Concrete Island. Sounds intriguing. Direct to my TBR. Thanks

@@Michael_Wertenberg Noted. I don't drink (save for tea and coffee). Although there was a time, long gone, I enjoyed good Irish whiskey.
@@Michael_Wertenberg Leffe brune is resplendent. Belgian beers are my favorites. Once a year, I treat myself to a Chimay.
I felt Crash, the film, had a voyeuristic quality that didn't suit the story. The book was riveting.
That's a good point!
Very much agree, the book is in first person and into it
The movie was shot with this separation from the subject that I do NOT think suited the story
I have only seen the Fly. I love that movie! 😂🪰 Crash sounds intriguing. I remember hearing about it. Don't they bang in the car just to get banged by a car? 🤔😝
😁That's the basic idea😁
