Hi Jorge, I didn't mind waiting but the difficulty is that our bank kept closing our account because we didn't have an RFC and some doctors would not give us a receipt to turn into my insurance company to get reimbursed. I'm not complaining but that's why we had to go into the SAT office rather then continue to wait in the virtual line. Yes you can. Paulette did that. The only difference is that with the temporary residency thy don’t the the electronic signature part of the process. -Marc
Thanks for this. I’m wondering how temporary residency folks building a new house can apply for an RFC without having a CFE bill since CFE stipulates it won’t establish an account without an RFC. 🤦♀️
Hi Renata, we were able to get an CFE account without an RFC. That was 1 year and a half ago. We are the first owners of our house. There was no meter when we bought the house. It would be great if I don’t need an RFC to establish the account as we’d like to finish our house build in Baja Californian Sur ASAP and not be beholden to some unknown wait time for an RFC appointment to get the lights turned on. However, I’m unsure of what applies to me bc now everyone with a temporary residency status over the age of 18 is required to get an RFC. Perhaps that RFC application can wait a little bit and is unrelated to the more time sensitive electricity need? I say this bc I also read that CFE as of June 30, 2022 requires an RFC number but that’s mostly for those who want to declare the electricity as a tax deduction for those who pay taxes in Mexico. Since I’ll soon get temporary residency status (I’m in process) and a CURP number and I don’t work in Mexico, I hope I will not require an RFC to establish a CFE account given the recent CFE changes… Plus, I would love to know what I need to provide to CFE to establish an account, if I don’t have an RFC. Ugh.

Hi Renata, We life off grid in the desert. No CFE ever. We got our RFC by first getting a letter from our town mayor to say we lived in the area. After that it was about 1 hour wait after our appointment time to get processed. You will need your CURP number.
The box you chose for the appointment..is extremely important as people dont know this but, if you check the wrong box. You will lose your appointment after months of waiting. And you wont know till your at the appointment. That being said...could you please tell me why you picked "casos especiales" as opposed to the normal box of personas fisicas..Non special case....this is really stressful as I dont know which one to pick. I'm a temp resident and want to get this done but I'm not sure which box to check. For some reason nobody seems to be talking about this small step yet it is the most important... thanks in advance. If u have knowdledgen on this please explain who should be checking what box. Thank u
Hi datguy25, I chose special case because it seemed the safest choice. Some of the SAT offices are interpreting personas fiscas as your applying for an RFC on behalf of someone else and then sending people away. People who want to buy a car or setup a bank account or something else where they are being asked for an RFC should definitely select casos especiales box. Most people that are expats that i know and are not making an income from a Mexican company selected that box. Lately if your over 60 years of age a lot of SAT offices are letting people walk in and apply on the spot. if you need further clarification or have other questions please let me know. -Marc

Isnt that insane that they would even "interpret" it this way given the fact that it's not legal for somebody to do this procedure on your behalf so that logic makes no sense. But as we both know that is the unfortunate way we find out things in this country. Absolutely zero explanations before the fact. But I appreciate the heads up. In your opinion, if someone was a temp resident and was looking for example to buy a house to do airbnb or any other type of self employment and needs the rfc would u still reccomend special cases? They never gave us a reason for closing our account. We were able to successfully open an account and keep it open at another bank after getting our RFC’s

HSBC actually closed it on us 4 times with out a reason why. Sometimes it would be a couple weeks before they closed it sometimes it was a couple months. Never an explanation why. We've heard the BBVA is a good bank though. We wound up at Banco Intercam and we've been very happy with them. -Marc
Hi CheckOut, they really don't care who's name is on the bill. They just get the address from it. It's more to make sure that you are giving them a valid address. -Marc
Hi friends, I am a permanent resident living in Quintana Zoo and waiting in the virtual line with SAT. I am renting an apartment here and non of the utilities are in my name. I just pat the landlord for my charges assigned to my apartment. Do I have a problem with this? I can get the original bill for my apartment, but it's not in my name I can also get a bank statement with my apartment address on that.Thanks for your help.
Hi David. Use the CFE bill for the apartment. They don't care about the name on it being different. The CFE bill will work fine. It better then using your bank statement but you should take your bank statement with you just in case though I don't think you'll need it. We did not need it. Also a good idea to take your resident card with you and your passport. and any CURP documentation. If you are over 60 they have been letting people go to the office without waiting in the virtual line, also if you can prove the need for an RFC number immediately (if that;'s your case) they will see you right away. There are a coiuple questions you have to answer to gain admittance . Basically you have to agree to be nice people and no advertising for services. -Marc

Hi Bruce, It's the CFE electric bill that comes to your house. They don't want a copy of the bill they want the original. Not sure if they will take a printed copy from an online statement but they might. -Marc

I'm not planning on buying a car in Mexico or open a bank acct. To speak of having a car or a bank acct or even a house I let my future girlfriend or hopefully senorita wife deal with all of that. What I will do is just cruise and enjoy being alive and live my life. Enough paper work already with everything else. From what I understand if I heard right so when you do get to be permanente status residency even though you may not have a bank or buying a car you need to have one, is that so ?
It's becoming more difficult to do things like open a bank account without an RFC. The Government is really pushing the requirement that everyone with a residency visa and citizens over the age of 18. We also had an issue where a doctor wouldn't give us a receipt to turn into our health insurance company because we didn't have an RFC. It might not be a necessity now but it seems like it's going that way. -Marc
Still sounds like a lot of hoop jumping. Fortunately, we have lots of time, especially since we need our CURP first, and we don't know how long that is going to take. Hopefully, by the time we are ready for our RFC, the waiting line won't be so long. It's a concern because we don't plan to stay in any given place for any longer than 3 months for the first 4 years.
If you hire a facilitator to complete your residency process have them get you a CURP at the same time. Also get an INAPAM discount card. The RFC is a mandatory requirement for anyone over 18 with some kind of residency visa and citizens of Mexico. Not having one has caused us some problems with getting receipts from doctors to turn into our insurance company and with our bank continually closing our account. -Marc
