His girlfriend let him buy a 3D printer, welding tools, a broken PS4, an old laptop and all this other equipment, and she gives him the space in the house and the time needed to make this, but she would't let him buy a Steam Deck?
I guess there’s room for improvement: - slimmer flat batteries from smartphones - uncased SSD instead of HDD to save space and power - slimmer heatsink and fan from a gaming laptop - moving hdmi -> lvds circuitry to a custom PCB
That's a good list of potential improvements. Cellphone batteries would be great because of the ability to fast charge, their higher capacity and extended longevity. Also, a 1366x768 screen resolution would be good.
Not diminishing the ingenuity of the creator but I'm reminded of the movie quote, "...so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
This is like "Tony Stark building one, in a cave, with a box of scraps," I love the ingenuity of this build. I am quite impressed and look forward to seeing how Francesco and the community iterate on it.
A clip of an exploding 18650 would've gone a long way near the end when you're talking about how extreme caution is needed if you're going to weld/solder batteries together. 😂
You're the first one after a loooong list of comments, aside from mine to mention Ben Heck. Ben is still doing videos under the "Ben Heck Hacks" channel name and his series on Menards electronics is pretty hilarious. It's like Big Clive but with a little more comedy.
I love Peter Knetter but his console projects are the modding equivalent of shitposts 😂 Not a dig on him at all-- he's just going for a different thing entirely besides actual functionality
People are always trying to make desktop consoles portable and vice versa. This is reminiscent of the situation with Apple: the iPhone is always getting larger, while the iPad, on the contrary, is becoming more compact. Just a funny observation. But this mod is pretty straightforward and that makes it extremely cool.
I'd like to see something like this in a semi-portable package. It can be shrunk significantly without the batteries and you won't need to worry about it dying at an inopportune moment. A single unit that has the display, console, speakers, etc inside and only needs a power cable to plug into the wall. Maybe move the PSU to a brick like this one to combat heat.
this is really cool, i dont really think of it as portable, but more as gaming laptop adjacent, (needing to be connected to an outlet with the battery sort of serving as a inbetween outlets) a hdmi splitter inside would be amazing to maintain its tv functionality
Unfortunately, I have seen portables like this before made by Ben Heckendorn so this isn't all that surprising. Ben's portable Xbox units weren't battery powered but very similar styling overall. The one thing I would have done though was swap out the hard drive with an SSD and the SATA units aren't badly priced. This would extend the play time a bit and have faster loads to boot.
I just traded in my PS4, saving up for a PS5 this holiday season! Regardless, this is an impressive build by a guy that cooks when his girlfriend makes him think outside the box! Very cool!
1. Charging time was likely due to safety -- to avoid any possibility of thermal runaway. 2. The battery housing is BAD -- the battery heat goes RIGHT into the console and vice versa. 3. Repurposing an xbox 360 power supply is an odd choice -- when a usb c PD3 charger can EASILY supply 150w+ 4. The battery should be a clip on/slide on box on the bottom -- with an optional DC input, as well as possibility for a few common battery standards (eg: tools, laptops, etc) 5. An SSD should have been sued. Obv might require a mod chip, but common ways emulate a HDD for an SSD is much desired to hide the use of an SSD from the OS (but maybe there's anti cheat for this?) 6. The motherboard can be FOLDED to make an even smaller package, as well as concentrating heat to a central heat pipe.
This is a really cool project but needs some changes to the power system to be remotely practical. I would recommend using one of those 140w Anker powerbanks (maybe several of them). They can put out huge power, but also can be charged at 140w as well.
Millions of men roll like that, including many in my social circle. I don't say anything, though. They have their reasons and it's their lives. Makes sense to them.
Even though I am not a playstation fan, I still think this is incredible. When I think about the big picture and the constraints behind this: It is an excellent proof of concept and prototype. This will lead to amazing mods and projects for the future.
Lithium polymer batteries are more efficient than lithium ion and the chargers can be small but powerful. They can be charged in 2 hours rather than 12. That's what I would go with. It would be easier to keep the cells balanced as well. Li-po batteries are rectangular and flat so they would take up space more efficiently.
I used a AK400 to cool my PS4 slim by drilling off the original heatsynk, it reaches now around 50 at maximum load on demanding games instead of 79+ set by Sony and it is completely silent.
@@SAMRGAMERTV No, but it is simple, youl need the cooler i mentioned, epoxy glue and a bit of knowledge on wht youre doing for sure, once you take the original heatsync off it is easy to glu the AK400 base on it, over the APU would be, let it dry for a day and just reassemble the console with the top open, place the cooler on the base making sure it makes contact with the APU and wire it to the original PWM wires from the board.
That actually brings up a very good question, how strong is an original PS4/PS4 Slim versus a Steamdeck? I recall it being the equivalent of a GCN 1.0 Radeon 7850, which while a pretty decent budget gaming card until say 2017... is hardly anything special next to a modern APU.
The PS3 was shown in the video a few times which confused me, but the PS4 also wasn't mentioned if it had Internet connectivity (i doubted it did have) or that the console could be turned on using the controller etc, or if the power is usable in other countries, such as UK power etc. It would be interesting to see an update if this is done in future TIto, thanks for the showcase though, interesting if someone would use these on a train journey etc.
I believe "Restore Technique" on UA-cam made one months and months ago but he's uploaded the build in like 22 shorts so I guess he missed out on the "world's first" by doing that
It's so funny because it's still with the Italian menu Hope he'll put a handle, use an nvme with an adapter, a copper heatsink with a blower fan, a blower fan and a couple of supercaps to see if it charges faster He should try to play Enotria to be even more Italian 😂
So it has the same battery life as some of the first ever "laptop" computers from the 70's and 80's and is basically as big as them... Can I have four please???
I bet with software modding that you could underclock the CPU and get a little bit longer battery life. I'm not sure how much that would affect performance, but a slight underclock could be beneficial.
Can't really complain about using 18650s on it, using holders instead of tab welding would be my preferred method for ease of swapping when they eventually go tho, but otherwise a solid choice, they're about as safe as you can get in Li-Ion therms. Dealing with the delicate pouch cells as in phones, some laptops and power banks sure is a much worse hassle, and would gain little in comparison, new 18650 cells, same amount, at 3 Ah each would give you close to 200w/h which is twice of what you're even allowed to carry on a plane, and still give you 2h play time.. Same about the power supply situation: the charging circuit might be way underpowered, but using USB-C would not work properly either. That tops at 100w, while the PS4 slim alone gaming would drain that much. Add to it some watts from the monitor and you'll be draining your battery even plugged into the most powerful USB-C charger available in the market.
hey bossman just wanted to say thank you for everything you show. there are a few Modder's on YT that shows the newest mods and installs. much respect.

This is quite neat but saying that the screen looks anything but horrible is just silly. I've never seen dark souls look almost as blue as the PS4 home screen I guess maybe it's your camera, but that screen looks horrifically bad and probably should have used an SSD for even lower power consumption and quicker loading. But either way, super awesome concept
I do wonder if batter tech will ever get good enough to run stuff longer than just a few hours, 😓 even devices like the deck has a limit of around 3. It just feels like as tech advances battery tech has stagnated severely. Maybe I'm wrong
