Ace Rimmer...a man who can pilot a spacecraft round and round the edge of a black hole, a man who can wrestle and surf a crocodile in mid-air, rescue a princess from a Nazi concentration camp...all the while making time to help orphans, having drinks with and giving thanks to the engineers who help make his missions a success, befriending whoever he meets, and making time for the ladies, those who need him, and then more ladies. Sigh...WHAT A GUY.
I think Rimmers problem isn’t a lack of motivation, I think he had talent and knowledge he just didn’t have the ability to apply to become an officer, and I think his lack of confidence was a drain on his charisma. Admittedly I think his pompous entitlement didn’t help him either.
@@SpykeTheSUboth Ace and Arnold were unable to face their opposites in the flesh. That commonality was an interesting contrast to Listers genuine delight that his alternative had succeeded where he had failed. It was a subtle touch that highlighted even the least successful Lister’s good nature did not possess the flaws that even the best version of Rimmer retained.

Love how deep Red Dwarf can be. Ace's distain for Arnie could be that he's pissed off that he didn't conquer the demons that Ace could. So he's more frustrated with him than anything. as he is the living example of what Arnold Rimmer could be.
@@SpykeTheSU really good point mate but I think if you are a good person (which I have no doubt you are) youre "ideal self" would like you because you are a good person, if they dont, they are just arrogant tossers 🤣.

As much as I think Rimmer is a pathetic worm of a man, I can't really help but feel Ace had a stick up his ass here. Rimmer's a soft light hologram at this point. He literally cannot do any of what Ace asked him to do.

Such a brilliant pastiche of the sound of Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away' and obvious Top Gun spoof. Fantastic!

If Arnold Rimmer is what we are without motivation or self-reflection, then Ace Rimmer is the complete opposite.

Indeed!
How this cleared the copyright guys at the BBC, I have no idea

Well, a goofier version, that is (Obviously!)
That was actually intentional

Look you can say what you like about me but I won’t hear a word against Berlin here..
I *always* thought that "Take My Breath away".Was the weakest song on theTop Gun OST. Plus "Mighty Wings" was> Danger Zone.
Howard Goodall needs more attention in the soundtrack world. Very talented. To be able emulate the Top Gun music feel. Yet still makes it his own.
Howard Goodall writes musicals and used to write for TV and movies, he has plenty of attention in the industry.
