This theme song does some strange things to me, just as it did when Red Dwarf was still aired: you know it's a comedy but the spacey spirit of the music gives you the feeling of wanting to be a part of an adventure bigger than yourself. Anyway it reminds me I'm still one proud Dutch smeghead.

Its 9 o'clock on a Friday night in 1993, I'm 14 years old and the week of school is finally at an end. Same. High school wasnt a great experience for me but Friday night meant two days away from the bullies and an episode of Red Dwarf to laugh my arse off at.
The lead-up to the chorus is a nick from a Bowie song (not one of my favorites, but I know it) called, appropriately enough, _Loving The Alien_. Not surprised at all that any of the Red Dwarf team are Bowie fans!
Loving the Alien isn't one of many people's favourites. It's from his mid'80s trough (the so-called Phil Collins years) which has been largely written out of Bowie's career. Interestingly, there was an edition of Celebrity Pointless on TV recently and there were visual clues to five David Bowie singles. Loving the Alien was the lowest scorer of the five tracks (only four from a hundred people knew it). The others were Starman (unsurprisingly the highest), Diamond Dogs, Cat People and The Laughing Gnome.
Bowie actually considered Loving the Alien to be one of his 15 best songs according to a compilation album he released in 2008. However, he was well known to dislike the production on it and when he performed it live in later years, he did it completely differently.
Yes, that's exactly my problem with it; the production was the worst sort of 80s bombast and had way too much synth action going on. And the outro went on seemingly _forever_! I'll have to listen to another version of the song. I did get a warm fuzzy when I recognized it in this piece, though.
"the outro went on seemingly forever!" The single version was actually considerably shorter (under five minutes as opposed to over seven). Bowie may not have been a prog-rocker but he did have an occasional propensity for the epic.
2022 and here I am reminding myself of better days gone by. Folk gone crazy in 2022...take me back.... This and the weekly top gear.... Oh the days... No moo biles, no tinter net, tick sock.... Take us all back Gen X baby
Fan fact - This song was composed by Howard Goodall, the same guy who did the theme for Mr Bean, Blackadder, Thin Blue Line, Vicar of Dibley, Catherine Tate and QI.
I dont even remember watching this as a kid (wasnt born when it released, was born in 05) even though part of me remembers watching it with my mom, and the main thing that makes me think this, is that the theme was in no way new to me, and honestly, in my personal opinion, this is probably the best theme song i can think of
The best era of my life was coming home from school Friday nights to eat dinner with my family while Stargate SG-1 and Battlestar Galactica played on SciFi Channel, then the next night watching Red Dwarf on PBS with my dad until my bedtime. Sad that the West has collapsed culturally and will never produce brilliance like this again.

"I'm all alone, more or less," remains one of the greatest lines ever written in a song (yes, I'm being ever-so-slightly hyperbolic). It's a completely throwaway line, but at the same time utterly absurd while also being deeply profound, given the context of the show and Lister's situation.
I just posted this on Facebook to no one and described it as a gloriously funny show about existential dread. It’s definitely a theme. I wish it were more well known in the states. Nicely done Howard
+Matt Maloney I liked it
Bowie actually considered Loving the Alien to be one of his 15 best songs according to a compilation album he released in 2008.
I love this show, I would give anything to rewatch in my room whilel my parents yeld at me to go to bed.
Im here from ltg
2022 and here I am reminding myself of better days gone by. Folk gone crazy in 2022...take me back.... This and the weekly top gear.... Oh the days... No moo biles, no tinter net, tick sock.... Take us all back Gen X baby
How many people felt nostalgia but laughed at the same time?
I remember just finding this flipping through the channels and was instantly hooked.
I can't love this enough. Brings back great memories.
Fan fact - This song was composed by Howard Goodall, the same guy who did the theme for Mr Bean, Blackadder, Thin Blue Line, Vicar of Dibley, Catherine Tate and QI.
I remember watching Red Dwarf when my family was together and complete. Things change but this song always brings me comfort.
I just watched this for the first time today. Binging the rest over the course of a few weeks.
it's awesome even today although over 30 years old but tbh i prefer the early seasons.
I read the book! :)
The only thing si-fi about it is in space the only thing funny about it is SMEGGIN EVERYTHING :D !!!!!!!!!
Never missed a episode brilliant
Wish they'd repeat it on TV. Used to watch it 6pm or 9pm on BBC2 can't remember
I can't remember myself lol
@@edwardpaton9111 definitely BBC 2 cos I remember the paint being thrown on the number 2 logo in slow motion..can recall it was on on Thursdays..I'm fu*kin weird me aren't I... I've just realised I'm really f*ckin odd to remember half the crap I do..
Can't remember what I had for me tea last night though..🤪🤪🤯
@@LittleJo- 😂😂😂😂😂😂
"I'm all alone, more or less," remains one of the greatest lines ever written in a song (yes, I'm being ever-so-slightly hyperbolic).
It's a completely throwaway line, but at the same time utterly absurd while also being deeply profound, given the context of the show and Lister's situation.
I miss this show.
Just another month and a half or so, and we'll have a whole new season to watch!
I never miss it, just keep watching it over and over again.
+zombeatle01 series
season 11 and 12 coming soon to Dave 22nd September
It is one of the rare times that the reboot is as successful as the original.
Original cast AND original writers - And boy does it deliver.
I just posted this on Facebook to no one and described it as a gloriously funny show about existential dread. It’s definitely a theme. I wish it were more well known in the states. My ex and I once went to a Halloween party last minute cutting out and gluing glitter covered craft foam letter ‘H’s to our foreheads. Good old days
Guys, you weren't lying. It's frreeeeezing out here. Just wanted to let you know I just got it. Love all you shiny thangs!
And seriously, ACE RIMMER - WHAT A GUY!
Always loved this theme. Glad to see others do too.
