50 odd years of sailing and I have discovered one truism, everything on a boat is broken, you just don't know it yet. Glad the issue is resolved and great service from your supplier.
Love y’all. My tranny went k-put leaving Georgetown and had to sail back to the anchorage. Waited 3 weeks for a new one from Belgium. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. And I cried too 😢
I have used both Motenergy and Sevcon products in my many conversions and can attest to their excellent quality. Although you have had to work hard to service the drive system, you were successful and you didn’t have to hire a diesel mechanic. Well done!!
Ignore the 'sitting on the couch' critics. They are jealous that you are doing what they dreamed of but never made it. Tammy, you show your emotions in situations they never have to face. Good luck to you both and your adventure xx
I could make some snide comment about going electric. (I chose Penta over Electric Yacht), but have had several breakdowns too... it's the nature of the game. Keep up the good fight & living your dream!
you are a fantastic family wonderful people and its so good you all know each other that well you deserve a brownie point each there's only three in the whole world big thumbs up
If you have a multimeter, you can check the resistance between the three phases of the motor. You have three main wires coming from the motor. Check the ohms between these three wires. They should read the same between any two connections. If not then there is a problem with the motor. You can pre check these phases before mounting the motor to save time. Also, these motors can run for awhile before they get warm, you can run them for awhile without having to hook up the coolant right away. As long as they are not hot to the touch. That way you don’t have to hook up the coolant While putting it to a high rev test.
@@randymalnar4889 Randy, I've got the same motor, ME1616, and put my meter on the leads to check for open or shorted windings. But, these motors are such high power motors that they measure essentially a short circuit so unfortunately this approach wouldn't help. I'm thinking that my battery cell internal resistance meter that can measure 1/1000 of an ohm might work.
I use lithium in my electric boat i previously posted about in past videos. I didnt start with lithium. The difference is night and day with an electric boat. You have way more range, you can go full power much longer, and the power you get is so much more steady. Your battery will stay at essentially full power with full clean amps at full power soo much longer. You will not regret the switch at all. It will almost be like getting a new boat.
Just in case you were wondering those trees with the funny bark were Crepe Myrtles. They are a very popular tree/shrub in Tidewater Virginia that do well in warmer climates. Glad to see your problems being resolved.🙂
Geez, Don't pick on my "Tammy"!!! I wish, at times, I could let my emotions empty my adrenaline through tears, for Pete's sake. Tammy and Todd, you guys are great. OH, LOL, yelling is also just a part of boating!
Now add an electric motor symbol up on the bow next to the piling. Really enjoyed the debriefing, good advice. If the batteries had the same energy density as diesel I would convert.
They are already taking the next step with the replacement of the cathodes with other materials like Fe .. meaning they will be cheaper and more efficient, stable and longer lasting .. but in the auto industry they are production testing the first solid state pouch cells. The other material being used in Li cathode replacement is Manganese. I didn't realise you guys were still on Agms still 😯 Latest Auto packs have 600 mile/1000 km ranges... and you can use far more of the capacity of course... and cycle more times.
A PITA but imagine having to try to swap out combustion engines on your own whilst on the water 😬. 🤞🏻 This stays fixed for you this time. Try getting a pair of radio hands free headsets. Red seas had to swap out both of their Cats diesels in Fiji in the middle of the Pacific at a dock. 😮
I almost bought a boat with an Electric Yacht motor on it. It was nicely installed and does have many benefits over internal combustion engines. I bought a boat with a diesel instead, because it is what i am more familiar with. Great video showing the real cruising lifestyle on a sailboat. I am curious to know if you have an hour meter on the motor for comparison to running a diesel for X hours?
I just discovered your videos which is a shame because I've been your anchor neighbor during this adventure. I've got the 2 boats out here rafted together (power boat and sailboat). I would have been more than happy to help you. I have a truck here. I'm guessing you've gone on with your journey as I don't see your boat here anymore. I'm glad you got it back up and running.
Todd and Tammy and Ann sorry you had to read such comments. Having watched you from the beginning of your journey it’s obvious you both handled yourselves with strength, love, endurance and at time tears.
What I'm looking forward to is seeing you go to some remote places and having full batteries where diesel is not available. Great debrief, would have been nice to get some video of the motor being diagnosed / repaired, but I understand that was not in your control 👍 Typical manufacturing defect rates are usually
@2:35, they updated the software on the controller you sent back, but what about the other one? will there be issues when the motor controllers are on different software versions or did they give you instructions on how to update the other controller?
We haven’t kept up with the many brands springing up lately. At the time we bought this Electric Yacht was the only company offering a complete kit for a boat our size. Now there are lots of options.
No worry about emotions. Stuff happens on the water. I hate channels that make it look like paradise all the time. Its not. If you love it you take the good and the bad. I like watching boat videos when im not on the water. I want it real. Because i know better when i watch the fake people.
For an electric motor there sure seems to be a grinding noise. Likely the transmission but even then, it seems like a lots of resistance. Speaking as an uneducated and inexperienced listener of electric motors for a boat. Having said that, changing the electric motor is a whole lot easier the changing a diesel engine.
There is more of a grinding noise with these motors than I was expecting, but a lot of that has to do with the twin belts. It's also fairly quiet, Todd must have awesome microphone.
I have never been stuck or got to the ramp, flipped the switch, and my electric motor works every time. Every time i see people put the boat in the water for a day out and go home when they can't get their gas motor started. I feel bad for them everytime too because i know how excited they were to get out on the water.
These motors are 15 kw motors, so need 30kw, and to support that at 48 volts needs 625 amps. So they would need two of these 15kw batteries at minimum, and one heck of a BMS!
As frustrating as your problems are at least there are two of you. When I'm fixing something I have to climb out from the 'Pit of Despair', throw a switch, and climb back in, over and over again. My boat sails 6, sleeps 4, and bottom paints 1.
@adamtedder1012 You sure do. You're like a Superman boat G_d. That feeling of accomplishment leaves you walking on air (even when I’m lying in the sofa in recovery).
Two things. Firstly Tammy's emotions. So what, you are human, you are an emotional creature. On the failure, I'm an Engineer, things fail but electrical things tend to be more reliable. Sounds like you had "infant mortality", an inherent fault from new that was waiting to fail. Would anyone carry a spare diesel engine?
As somebody said to somebody else, I admire your indefatigability - and good humour
Thanks! ❤️
We LOVE the raw video, with Tammy and her reactions... It is a reminder that boat life is real!! KEEP IT REAL GUYS!! Safe sailing...
Thanks!

The motors also have temperature sensors, and will be de-powered if they get hot. That's what happens with the air-cooled versions.

I completely agree with the fantastic Q&A comment. Not many channels do that.
Yes, Scott @ elect yacht repaired a bad fuse in my controler ....great service, fast
Yep! They’re great!
It was a good video, Tammy is a good sailor.
Thanks!
Hi guys, first comment!! I personally enjoy when you film walking to where you’re going and sharing different locations.
Thanks we’ll keep trying.
Thanks for sharing guys!

It hasn’t seemed to cause a problem but it was a point of discussion.
Do you have to send that motor back as a core or can you keep it and have it rebuilt for a spare?
We get to keep it and we’ll see if it can be fixed.
What brands would you recomend besides electric yacht
We haven’t kept up with the many brands springing up lately. At the time we bought this Electric Yacht was the only company offering a complete kit for a boat our size. Now there are lots of options.
Are you able to get the Motor rewound / repaired in order to have a spare?
We’re keeping it and will explore that option.

You could really use a pair of VOX radios.
We’ve tried VOX on our radios but the wind made it tough

Maybe you did but don’t trust that on/off switch. Touch the cables with a multimeter be for touching those wires.

Combustion volatile lithium batteries on water. I'd be nervous about installing those. 🤔
💁🏻♀️
wonder what is a matter with motor?
🤷🏻♀️
Lithium getting cheap. Now in the range of 2k$ for a 15kwh battery in a DIY project and about 1/3 the weight for the same capacity in lead/agm.
It’s coming down in price for sure but we need a 48 volt bank which is still pretty spendy.
