I love these videos! I'm in school in San Diego and start clinicals in a few weeks. I'm so nervous and excited at the same time. I'm a little older than most..as in all of the other students in my program (53) and I am loving it. You are never too old to reinvent yourself!!
Brianna Bri Hi, No I go to Southwestern college. It is so much less expensive than Concord and has a much better reputation than the for profit schools. You should check out the program at Southwestern college first. Good luck
Stephanie Davison ... I’m thinking of doing this too. I’ve been a flight attendant for 25 years and I think the time has come..... I’ve always been fascinated with surgery anyway. I even have a couple more years on you .... is it an issue so far? thanks so much.
Just want to say thank you for these videos, I am currently in school, for the surg. tech program, I am 47 and I am a little bit scared that my age might hinder this career path, but I am still going after it! My youngest daughter is 20 and she and I are both doing this together, your videos inspire me, I am extremely excited, and nervous, Cheers to all of us just starting out, or have accomplished their dreams already! you guys are great, our school uses the surgical tech tips in our courses! they love you too!
Any new students, this channel has helped me out so much during my education. Every school is different, and every student has a different experience. It's going to be tough, no matter your background. Stay humble, and brush off the bad days. It's worth it. The doors will open if you keep pushing them. I'm sure job opportunities are different everywhere, but if you cultivate your soft skills, and put in work, you will be rewarded. Acceptance takes effort in every field. You will find times that you regress. It's normal. Everything is intimidating and anxiety ridden at first. It will fade. Stay focused on your fundamentals, and engaged in the moment. You won't be able to process everything, but latch on to the things you remember. Like any task, repetitions and attention will help you improve and perfect your craft. Much luck and love to all bold enough to step into the suite.
Great video Shane :-) so many of the questions you asked were just what I wanted to know about! I am even more excited to graduate and start my career!! Also congratulations for becoming an FA! Thats awesome! It makes becoming a surg tech even more of a great career choice because you can advance and be more involved! I can't wait!! Thank you again for sharing and I look forward to what you have for us next!! Amy C. (Lewes, De)
I had surgery a month ago and I was awake the whole time, and I could see all the tech working around me,so I decided I want to become a tech. How did u know that was the career you wanted without knowing exactly what it feels like to be a tech?
I’ve been a scrub for 3 years. Straight out of school I did scheduled ortho cases-totals, sports med, and hands- minimal ortho trauma. I went to school and worked in the south. After my first year I decided to move across the country, and was immediately thrown into ortho at the hospital I came from. Not only did I have to learn the needles that the new hospital used, but also, I never thought about the regional names of instruments. It was maybe my second week at the new hospital and we were doing a knee scope. I thought, hey I’ve done a million of these I’ve got this, but I’m not an idiot and kept those thoughts to myself because I didn’t want to piss of my surgeon or my preceptor. My preceptor got everything set up because it was a completely different camera/suction situation than I was used to. My preceptor showed me her set up, and then broke. She went out into the core. The surgeon asked me for something. I said I’m so sorry I’m not from here, I’m from the south, we didn’t call anything by that name can you tell me what it is you were wanting, or show me? This man had the audacity to say “it’s the one that looks like(whatever he called it)”. Fuck you sir. Fuck you. He retired like two weeks later and I got over it. I’ve been at this hospital for two years now, and I’m finishing up my pre-reqs to become an ortho PA
Fantastic video! Should be asleep right now because we have clinicals in the AM but saw this upload and had to watch. Thanks for the info you provide, it really helps!
This just made me very excited. I start my pre-reqs this month. It feels very surreal to know that my next almost 3 years will be setting me up for this to be my life. 🤧
So I'm interested in this field and have tattoos on my arms, most programs are asking for them to be covered. How exactly is that going to work out when you're washing forearms and hands all the time? Are long sleeve undershirts allowed? Also what's the tattoo policy like in the hospitals you've worked in so far?
The law on that point is changing- Rather, because this isn't an industry where "perception of the public" is a reasonable factor, it becomes that these tattoo policies are increasingly being considered illegal.
Thank You for creating this channel. I will be starting my CST program in August 2018, and I'm enjoying watching your videos. What material do you suggest I start reviewing to prepare/get a head start?
I am a 54 year old woman thinking of entering ST school. Is this possible or a good job profession at my age? Love the videos! Just read a comment below on this topic of age. Lol. I take your comment as a positive YES! Thank you
Am going to check this CST program to Technical College I got in love about this career and you have give so much information and I hope to get into this program ... Thank You for all this videos full of information... God Bless You!!
+Fatima really depends on the person interviewing you. Tattoo's don't matter in reality because you will be covered up head to toe 90% of the time anyways.
Love your videos and everything you're about! I am stuck in a pickle right now and would love your help. I recently just graduated with my Bachelors in Health Science and knew I wanted to work in a hospital somewhere but after watching your videos I 110% want to be a CST. My question is should I go ahead and apply for a CST position or should I try and go back to school and get my certification? I applied for a SPT as an entry level position but no luck so far. Any tips?
This kinda brought my spirits down regarding getting hired at a young age with no experience haha. When I finish my program I’ll be 21 with no experience
Thinking about getting into this career path. This is how i came across your video. Im curious what the pay looks like over time. From your first job after training to a few years after.
Can you support a family with the pay you get as a surgical tech ? I have a 1 year old and I would love to get a house or at least a one bedroom apartment
I'm going to st.phillips in san antonio texas. but im so scared that i won't get a job after finishing the program. i really wanna be a surgical tech but man. not getting a job is just nerve wrecking
I’m a Fresh Grad/certified AST/SPT but I only got 3 months of clinicals due to the covid shutting down clinical sites I managed to get 155 cases but not many variations of big cases due to me being at a surgical center..I caught Pneumonia and was on a ventilator and in the hospital for a month I still have inflammation in my lungs my breathing has been getting much better but the doctor doesn’t want me to go to work at the moment because I’m going to at higher risk to catch covid so I’m discouraged because I want to get out there and not forget my training and worrying about Facilities giving me an opportunity when I’m cleared smh I don’t know what to do I get it health comes first but this sucks so much
Hello sir, I am watching your videos for long time. My third year in BS surgical technology is going on, tomorrow is my clinical rotations starting. My first 15 days will be in trauma department, so what should I do and what not be a successful learner in my clinicals..... please sir....!
I will be graduating with a AS in Health Sciences in August, then going thru CST certification (certificate) soon afterwards.....is this a good route to go??? I want to eventually be a 1st assists, but cant wait to become a CST. And advice would me greatly appreciated. Love your channel. Thank you for what you do!!!
Also, I know it obviously varies from workplace to workplace, so this might not be answerable, but how often do you actually get called in when you're on call?
Could you do a video on how to study for the hesi entrance exam? I just found out that the college I want to attend only accepts 15 seats for the surgical tech class and that’s scary! I need the top scores to get in HELLLLLLLP

Amy Camburn ask away?
What city does Memo work at? I've seen several vlogs from others that don't speak as positively as him. It's a breath of fresh air to hear him.

Love your channel. What does "Closing for a doctor." mean?
Closing up the incision with suture.
Surgical Tech Tips I thought that was the doctors job 🧐
congratulations
this video was very helpful, thanks! One more question..are tattoos an issue when applying to the program or the hospital?
+Fatima really depends on the person interviewing you. Tattoo's don't matter in reality because you will be covered up head to toe 90% of the time anyways.
Fatima it depends on your hospital but at our hospital it’s not a problem.

Adding to appearance, do piercings matter? Like ears or nose? Or must you remove them for surgeries?

Most places require a certification to work, some states have it written as a law.
This kinda brought my spirits down regarding getting hired at a young age with no experience haha. When I finish my program I’ll be 21 with no experience
So did u get hired or was it hard?
Its about the process youll be fine

Is working full-time during surgical tech school possible?
Absolutely.
Also, I know it obviously varies from workplace to workplace, so this might not be answerable, but how often do you actually get called in when you're on call?
For me personally, its more-so finishing late cases than actually getting "called in" in the middle of the night. Like you said it can vary though.
why is bill cosby your profile picture?
I'm in the class now. How hard is the class? Like the pharmaceutical part??? Anybody answer please??? Surgical tech guy???
