No I don’t think minimalism is what killed jerseys, a lot of beloved jerseys you could call minimalist like the show time lakers jerseys. A lot of beloved jerseys that stood the test of time are not that detailed The problem to me is the fonts, the fonts on many of them are so bad. Either they are bland or are too small
The Celtics look like they are repping Xbox Honestly, yearly city edition jerseys was a bad idea. They should have a longer gap between them to give more time to be creative
The 2018-19 season was peak. Black Miami Vice, Purple Rain Timberwolves, Chinese Culture Warriors, Native American OKC, there was inspiration and creativity in the designs. Now it's just a font, a slight gradient with a subtle pattern, and a >$100 price tag.
The initial Nike city jerseys had callbacks to the cities the teams played in. The Timberwolves had one that commemorated Prince, the Lakers had some inspired by different players all-time greats that played for them, the Hawks had one that commemorated MLK and another for the Georgia peaches, and the Nets had stuff that commemorated Biggie. They worked with local artists to actually tell a story of the city the team played for. They stopped putting any of that effort in, which is why the city jerseys got more trash with time.
It's the enshittification of jersey design. We used to be spoiled by the Miami Vice jerseys, now we got this garish fire truck red HEAT CULTURE nonsense.
celtics fan here - you’re not biased they just suck. I have no idea why this organization is so obsessed with “maintaining tradition” that they decide to just wear a worse version of their normal jerseys every year
It's just Nike in general being Ass. The vast majority of their Football (Soccer) jerseys are absolutely garbage as well. I'm already dreading the fact Germany dropped Adidas for Nike cause they offered more cash.
@@latterdaycreature it's the fortieth anniversary of moving to Sacramento and the thirtieth anniversary of switching to purple and black. A beam-themed jersey seems like the easiest layup on earth.
the subtle nod to the voodoo roots roots in louisiana are kinda dope definitely my favorite jerseys i hope they stick to that theme for a few more years
Ok maybe this has a simple answer, but why *do* some of these jerseys have such little color? Like sure not everything has to be super saturated, but Orlando’s just being devoid of any… forgive the pun but it doesn’t feel very magical at all.
Even though there's a handful of good city jerseys each year, I think it's time for Nike to switch the theme entirely. Those mixtape jerseys from a few years ago were a great change of pace, and the fans seemed to love them too. Some kind of shift would hopefully result in some more inspired designs, much like the early city editions.
I remember during the sleeved era a Celtics had these Gray jerseys with the sort of parquet design. wasn't crazy about sleeves at the time but I thought it was a cool color and design but everyone hated them besides me.
I LOVE the Memphis City jerseys. They are the retro ABA Sounds 70s era throwback jerseys that Vince Carter, Zbo, etc wore in 2016, everywhere they played they got rave reviews. 🔥🔥🔥
The Kings jersey is just a throwback jersey that doesn't connect to the city of Sacramento. The design is fine but I don't feel any connection to Sactown.
if the cavs one didn't say "the land" on the front i would've thought it was a pistons jersey with a vinyl record/motown theme. I still can't believe the pistons and now the tigers run the motor city/car theme into the ground with tire marks on a bunch of their alternates but none of them have ever done a motown alternate.
They said the Bucks can’t use the fan favorite Cream City colors anymore because it messes with on-court advertisements. I guess nobody is buying ad space in Detroit 😂
Why would the NBA put their budget into creative design? Then Adam Silver wouldn’t be able to pay Jalen Brunson under the table so he can force his Knicks into relevancy
If I see people complain about NBA jerseys, I always laugh. These US leagues are nowhere near as bad as European football in terms of overkill in new, shitty jerseys by the same companies being released on a yearly basis with designs going from bad to worse. Especially this same Nike company is bad. New yearly away jerseys, third jerseys teams never use other than the one match for marketing reasons, every set being accompanied by a new keepers jersey. National teams getting the same recycle process every two years with them not even trying to be difference. All countries just get the same standard design with the only difference being the colours. Currently there is this thing to have teams have away jerseys that are public transport seat designs from the 1980s and 1990s. If it wasn't for a bunch of clubs having legally required standardised designs for their home shirts (like a constitution, but then for individual private entities instead a country), it would have been even worse. And even those often get yearly tweaks. Clubs which just have a rule about needing to play in the same colours with no standard design still get their yearly changes. Main team shirt sponsors forcing their own regular changes as well. Outside the unique home shirt designs for teams that require said design, designs aren't even original anymore across the board and bland on top of that. Which is no surprise if the design teams of a company like Nike just have a yearly quota to fulfill and aren't allowed to go creative, because god forbids it creates controversy one way or another.
Nike always makes sports jerseys worse. Why we cannot have all the vast amount of NBA jerseys we had in the mid-2010’s is upsetting. I miss teams having a dozen jerseys, which was so fun! Now many of the alternates and city jerseys we get are ugly, and we often lack classic jerseys.
I’m finding it difficult to put into words just how offensive that Celtics jersey is. The premier basketball league in the world is going to make their reigning champions dress like a pee wee league team. The winningest franchise in league history is going to wear that. Just do the classic green and white, but add a gold trim like Adidas did when they won the chip in 2008. Hell, this would have even been the perfect season to bring back that weird ‘banner’ jersey from a couple years back. The lack of oversight from the league and the teams re: Nike’s design choices is affecting the league’s bottom line in a way I don’t think they understand. They could be doing so, so much more to move jerseys if the designs weren’t so tasteless.
The NBA should actually follow the MLB’s lead and have 8-12 teams release a special city jersey each year. And maybe let a classic looking team like the Celtics refrain from having a city jersey like the Yankees have so far.
The Spurs one is literally just last years jersey except instead of it being white they put thag blue/green and it’s terrible. I don’t think they’re even keeping the iceman jersey’s which is a shame😔
Hot take I think after every season the defending champion should wear white and gold because it’s hard to fuck up. After three seasons each champion has something stupid with black like why?
The minimalist designs would be fine if they werent mixing in random ugly intricate designs. Like why is the Cavs logo like that? Why do the Celtics have a generic 2k side design?
