MEGA ATV Drag Race! Can-Am Outlander vs Yamaha Grizzly vs Honda Rubicon vs Polaris Sportsman

  • We had the rare opportunity to gather together five brand new ATVs, so a drag race felt natural. These five units are not all direct competitors, but within the group we found four races that we thought would be pretty interesting.
The Can-Am Outlander XT700 vs Yamaha Grizzly 700 SE is a hotly contested race along with the Honda Rubicon 520 taking on the Can-Am Outlander PRO HD5. The Polaris Sportsman 1000 is the big boy of the group and it basically provided us with a benchmark on how much quicker big bore machines are than the rest of the industry.
Watch the video and let us know what you think in the comments below.

I still have my 2008 yamaha grizzly. 6600 hard miles and still running great. That bike towed over 40 cords of tree length firewood. I towed my 101"x10' snowmobile trailer with building materials 6 miles to camp. Can't go wrong buying a yamaha grizzly 700. My wife's 2011 grizzly 550 smokes my 700 by 4 bike lengths. No joke it's fast as hell!

The reliability of the Yamaha is untouchable ... I ride with a group of friends regularly and me and another guy have 700 Yamaha's and our bike have zero breakdowns and other than regular maintenance and break pads on the front and one set of wheel bearings that's it for the last 4years . Polaris and can-am are always breaking down and have been towed out multiple times. Honda are great bikes there just don't have a lot of horsepower .

We've got both versions of the Grizzly 700 right now and the newer, recycled motor is the clear winner between the two Always enjoy ATV content since I ride pretty much every day, and keep up the great work.

Great test - well done. I have a Can Am 1000 Max and just as you said, way more power than you need - with a few exceptions: Deep snow, mud and / or sand! The 1000 is pure magic when you need it. 90% of the time, you don't need it! I am very interested in the new Can AM 700. I was a bit sad to see the old Can AM 650 go away because overall, I felt it was the best overall engine choice. Maybe the new 700 is a worthy replacement. Thanks for the great ATV test.

I’d need to see a “true cost of ownership” over multiple years to make that a definitive point. Plus listing the power to weight ratio would be good to know. The Yamaha is still the better sport/utility balanced machine, and bet hits all the normal checkboxes for that category.

I can make it really simple for you. If you want a four wheeler that is reliable and will last forever buy a Yamaha or Honda. I can back that up with real world experience of owning multiple new machines since 2017. And if you want a fast atv get a can am or Polaris they are unreliable garbage but fun.

  • @EastCoastATV
    @EastCoastATV Рік тому +5

Great video! I'm glad you mentioned the price differences compared to performance levels. Personally, I compare models by price, not engine size. This is how I would look at it - The Grizzly 700 SE costs $15,200 according to Yamaha's website (Canada). The Can Am 700 is $3,000 less and it's a faster machine. A Polaris Sportsman 850 Ultimate Trail or Outlander 850 XT are the same price as the Yahama. The Sportsman and Outlander have far more hp and are much faster. The Polaris is much narrower in the middle too. The Yamaha has a reputation for better reliability but you're paying quite a bit more for what you get. The Grizzly 700 is a beautiful machine BUT power-wise it's in the same class as a Polaris 570 Premium with a winch, a front bumper, and steel rack extenders for $11,100. That's $4100.00 more for the Yamaha for roughly the same power and options. If Yamaha sold an 850 for the same price as the 700, or even $1500 more, they would pull sales away from Polaris and Can Am. Anyhow thanks for the great content.

In our group the two brute force bikes break down the most. One of the polaris bikes has a lot of issues but manages to make it back with trail repairs. My two hondas (rancher / rubicon) are always reliable and end up donating their gas because they are the most efficient. I picked up a grizzly this year and so far its been great but time will tell. Some of our rides in wisconsin can be 6 hours one way from the cabins. I will happily be the slowest bike in the woods as long as I don't have to be behind a tow rope or dealing with repairs.

The new Artic Cat Alterra 600 is super peppy off the line! I test drove one at my local dealer, shop quad model SE, and it was pulling wheelies off the line! It's clutched really well and I'm used to Polaris and their clutching. The AC Alterra 600 would smoke a Polaris Sportsman 570 and I bet it would take the new Can-Am Outlander 700 as well! You should review the new Arctic Cat
Alterra 600, the LTD model is very sharp looking!

A 570 outty beats the sportsman 570 and the 700 is beck and neck with the 650 outty. No way the altera is beating the outty 700.

Thats interesting - the old 570 outlander would *slowly* walk away from a Grizzly but lose off the line - this looks actually faster overall. I would wager a bet this bike is faster than the old 570 (which I have - trying not to be biased, here).

good video. a few opinions.. the tires on the grizzly arent very good in anything but mud, plus they add a ton of unsprung weight. i had two grizzlys, one se with those tires and a standard version with the regular tires. the one with the regular tires was noticeably peppier and grabbed better traction. i hope the rear box was empty lol. as far as quad lengths, technically the losing quads fronts should be right behind the winners rears, thats a length. im getting picky i know.

Good points. Agreed on the Grizzly's Zilla tires. In anything soft and squishy they do well, but hard packed trails/roads are not ideal for them.
And we only loaded the Grizzly's box with a few hundred pounds... I kid! It was empty of course. Might have added a little wind resistance, but it doesn't weigh much. Thanks for watching.

I think if you guys were to spend a day on the sportsman 1000, you'd take back most of the things you say are excessive. Yes, the machine is capable of wearing you out if you ride at the limits all day because as you stated, it has far more capability than any of the other machines you tested. I would challenge you, however to spend the day riding normally on one, like how you ride with family and friends. You'll start to notice that when you're not trying to be Ricky Bobby, you can cruise along at speeds that the small bore singles can barely achieve with 1/4 the engine noise, less effort, better ride quality and precise handling. This turns into riding literally hundreds of miles in a day, day after day while not being totally beat to death... you just need to spend some time on it to get past the honeymoon stage of all that power...

    • @DevinBoynton

I agree that the sportsman is a great machine in regards to power and trail riding. I used to own an 850 However they are HEAVY. As an ATV mechanic, give me a Honda or Yamaha to work on any day if the week over a polaris. When something fails in a polaris, its usually HELL to fix it.. The Jap quads break down significantly less. 700cc is all you need for 90% of the applications
