Thank you especially for the tip about using a lighter coloured pencil for the grid. I did one in graphite and it took a lot of layers under my white dog to make the lines disappear. Looking forward to seeing more.
thanks so much Matt - i've been commissioned to do a dog portrait and i found this video useful now i want to find the second video where you complete the portrait - you are so gifted!
loto Deg great, thank you! Glad you like the lessons. Would you share them with your friends on Facebook and Twitter? There will be more so stay "tuned."
I do. However, drawing skill is best perfected by doing it freehand. In my opinion, drawing with a grid is a step above in difficulty than in just tracing with a projector. I often sketch live portraits at art fairs to keep my freehand drawing skills sharp. But for many of my students, it's intimidating when they want to get right into the painting aspect. In the future, I plan on teaching how to draw freehand as well for those who want to go deeper into improving their drawing and sketching skills.
Kyomii Great question. I use 3 coats of gesso brushed on with a small flat synthetic brush, sanding lightly with a 200 grit or higher sandpaper in between coats.
Fine Art by Matt Philleo Thanks for letting me know, I imagined it would be similar to what you said but some don't even prep. How do you hang? Do you just use a picture hanging kit?
Kyomii I framed this for the customer with a little 5 X 7 frame I had in my studio. It already had a sawtooth hanger on the back. For something this small a sawtooth hanger is fine. But for anything over 11x 14, wire should be used because of the extra weight and balancing issues.

Hi Matt, great video 🙂 May I ask how you prep the hardboard?
