This was fantastic. Amazing teaching. I just did my first portraiture in a cancer support group. I wish I could show you it and tell me all I could have done better. God has given you a talent and love that you glorified him throughout your teaching. Awesome !
You know whaaaat? I was like this will be a cool tutorial. Then you started praying and I immediately hit subscribe! Love this! I am a new artist and I pray over my peices before during, and after lol. Awesome video. Thank you for explaining in such detail!
AMEN!!! I've never seen anyone pray BEFORE beginning a work of art I myself never have. Blessing my food...yes....praying before a test I have very little faith in passing...you bet!
Thanks Matt. You know when you're walking with GOD, you're ALWAYS GUIDED. I have been viewing videos similar to yours where the person in the video talks about God and you the viewer just feel good about watching that video. This is sooooo great, without HIM, WE ARE NOTHING. Thanks again, great info as well.
Josieann Bernard my pleasure. Just being real with who I am as a Christian. Life’s too short to not share the best thing-the best Person in the world with as many as we can.
Amazing, it's superb. Your teaching is wonderful, and I'm so happy you did freehand drawn. I'm working on my first self portrait, and drew by hand too. I learned so much from not doing transfer or projection. Learning how to paint is the greatest gift, and your teaching helps!
Thank you! Freehand is a great way to go. I usually teach beginners how to do a portrait using the grid method, but you learn so much while doing freehand!
Definitely. I know I need help when I paint. If I get too over confident, God sometimes allows me to get humbled by my mistakes. But you can learn from your mistakes too! I don't use a workable fixative, ever. Someone used this once during an art class, and their acrylic paint just peeled right off. Keep everything in an acrylic painting, acrylic. That's the best way.
you are something else ! BRAVO... for your excellent presentation; Thank you, especially for your wonderful disposition to ''Receive''* God and Serve through your God Given Talent. (to Receive * : there is a Tao saying that well illustrates the power of humility : '' When one speaks, the Tao stays Silent. When one listens, the Tao Speaks'' . YOU're quite an inspiration ... God BLESS YOU
Wondering what pencil you used for the sketch? Seems like it would be better than chalk. Alao, is there a reason you use the Matt Medium for glazing as opposed to the a tual Glazing Medium? Nice tutorial, thank you!
Thanks, I use colored pencil. By experimentation, I found it works MUCH better than chalk or even graphite. Matte medium is what I was trained to use when I learned this technique. I've never tried tual glazing medium. What is it? Matte medium works great for me!
Hi there! Thank you so much for this tutorial and I love your boldness for Christ! I have prayed before a painting and have also written a prayer on the canvas and then painted over it for someone :) What type of glazing medium are you using?
Thank you!! Jesus is the Master Artist, so it makes sense to ask Him for help before painting. I use Novacolor matte medium. I buy it by the gallon since I go through quite a bit!
@@fineartbymattphilleo Thank you for your reply! I've just started experimenting with matte mediums and purchased golden brand but I'm finding that it's changing the tone of my paint. I'm using it with golden sap green and with the medium it looks like a really light olive color. I'm trying to do a portrait of a soldier in dress greens. Any suggestions would be appreciated :)
I use Prismacolor. Standard color pencil. If you use the kind that is meant to mix with watercolor it will smear, big-time! Also, even with Prismacolor, it’s good to do a pre-deal spray of 50/50 matte medium and water (let dry) before brush applying.
Is there any other way to prevent smudging of pencil. I heard some say glazing medium. & is it necessary or can we just go start to painting over the pencil lines without using matte medium?
Yes, I use matte medium to seal in the sketch. Once it's sealed, you don't have to worry about smearing the pencil. The trick is to use a huge amount, load up your brush with it. That large amount will keep the bristles from digging in to the texture and disturbing the pencil. Then once the area's covered, smooth it out so there's no drips. Let it dry for an hour or so and you'll be ready to paint!
I used to paint for hours. Sometimes 10 hours in a session, just stopping long enough to get a bite to eat. But now that I’m teaching there are a lot of other tasks to do. So now it’s just an hour or two here and there. Sometimes a 3-4 hours.
I use clear acrylic matte medium, Novacolor brand. It dries to a flat finish, and it's perfect for adding fluidity to the paint, and creating translucent glazing effects.
Matt, your art is beautiful. More importantly, I appreciate that you begin the segment with a prayer and an acknowledgement of the greatest artist, Jesus Christ. Following you, hope you would consider reciprocating.
Thank you, A.K. I appreciate the kind words. Yes, we need to be real with who we are as Christians, and I think many people appreciate that. But we stand up for Him no matter what! Anyway, yes, I'll be glad to follow you. Have a blessed day!

God wants to be involved in every area of our lives. As artists, we invite Jesus into our creative process, because He is the Master Artist!

Wow beautiful
You are an amazing artist Matte

Wow another amazing portrait Matt😁👌👌👌👌
Thank you!
Good for you for not being afraid to ask for Divine help! Would a workable fixative sprayed over the sepia pencil seal it sufficiently?

@@fineartbymattphilleo Good to know. Thanks!
It would appear using the terracotta pencil is the key to establishing the basic values with the glazing method.
To skip past the religion part go to 3.15.
