OK.....I'll address the humming. It was something I not only picked up as a paramedic, but was trained to do. People forget that while an ER has a full range of multiple staff members, it is only the line paramedic in the back of an ambulance trying to deal with what he/she is seeing and hearing while trying to keep providing life saving care. Sometimes it is difficult to focus while visualizing some of the most startling damage that can be inflicted on a human body and the patient still trying to survive with our assistance. Humming was a skill I was taught to tune out the sights and sounds we encountered so we could focus on the job at hand. It helps to release calming neurotransmitters and oxytonin in the brain. If you get caught up in the moment, you'll forget what you need to do. Paramedics have only a couple of minutes to size up a patient's condition and determine the course of action and treatment they will put into action. It is just a habit in stressful situations that I still use. Example: In order to focus on the storm and actions I needed to take to ensure my safety, most of what was coming over the NOAA radio I don't even remember hearing while it was happening. However, I fully realize that it is highly annoying to those not inside my head. My family reminds me all the time. LOL 😆 😆 I just tell them, don't stress me out and I'll stop humming. 😆
@Jack Sloan Your humming wasn't annoying. I started humming along with you. Then I started thinking of a short story with the large bells in it. That was kinda scary seeing them far away and then suddenly one was right in front of your car. Thanks for sharing your footage.
Dude, you don't have to explain or apologize for your humming. I do something similar when I'm stressed in heavy traffic (I'm a city bus driver) so I get it.
i was a paramedic, now an ER RN. ( Don't hold that against me). I wish I had been trained to hum or employ any similar self-soothing mechanism. Because I don't think you can really even fully explain to laypersons the full horror of the stuff that you see...and, as you pointed out, how you really need to have a face that says "you're going to be fine, I'm here with you and we're going to take care of you, take a nice deep breath" and maybe even summon up a cheesey joke or two cuz thats what you do while you are simultaeously connecting monitors and starting IVs and doing continuous rapid assesments. I also found it calming, and just so understandable...I'm guessing that second, worse hit was the actual rear inflow jet that feeds into these storms that makes them bow-out in the first place? So you get the initial gust front, and then the more damaging rear inflow jet of (typically) crazy strong westerlies? I think there could have been more than one spin-up tornado inbedded in the line coming thru but you'd never of seen it in blackness like that...unless maybe you saw some dramatic shifting of wind direction/blowing rain/debris. glad you're okay, thanks for sharing.
I was looking in the comments for that.. I've never experienced that before. insane. I've seen it get a little dark out, and yellow, but not freaking night time practically.

Insane just how dark it became. It went from light to pitch black in a matter of seconds. You sir are very calm. I would be doing way more then just humming.
that black car is actually my moms car! and the fertilizer spreader (Cones as you stated) actually didnt hit the car but stopped just before! Only explanation we could think of for why it didnt hit her car was because of the deadzone the car was making as a wind break and the spreader not catching anymore wind in the cone end of it!

I used to work in an office for a local charity and i always could hear a humming noise in the background i thought it was the hard drive on the computer for several weeks until i found out it was my co-worker.
This was the scariest storm I have ever witnessed. I was driving in this near Hyvee trying to make my way to my apartment after work to get my pets to shelter. I had to pull off and shelter in Casey’s. Lucky my apartment only sustained minimal damage, a few shingles were missing. Nothing on my terrace was missing either which surprised me since I live on the third floor. As soon as the bulk of the winds passed, I raced back to the apartment to be locked out due to the power outage.
I've been in worse storms than this one. Born and raised in Texas and I've seen storms better than that and darker than that one in other words you can put your hand in front of your face and not see it that's how dark it was.
Thanks for footage, I was working when this happened and never got to see the initial impact. Only a tree fell on my garage; thank goodness my car was in the work parking lot.
You are lucky. My garage got ripped off of the house, torn into pieces and then scattered across the back yard. The roof was in one piece, but it got flipped upside down and slammed down onto a tree, so there was the busted trunk of a tree sticking up through the middle of the roof. The old chicken coop that was already leaning and ready to fall over made it through the storm just fine though. Storms can be so weird.
LOL! I’m glad you addressed the humming early on. I was getting ready to rip into you….until I saw your very plausible explanation of why you do it. Frightening, but nice content, mate! 👍👏
High drama you captured here, Sir. The humming didn't bother me at all, and especially so after I read your explanation for it. I am going to remember that!
My dad was driving home during this, he got home in the middle and ran inside, he was covered in dirt and mud 😰 Edit: my mom said the winds were over 100 mph
i dont live too far from this and had to run home to take shelter i had to cover my head in my shirt and run blind to the door cuz the short amount of time that i had not, dirt and sand had gotten into my eyes it was terrifying
I'm in Dimock, South Dakota and I remember this day well. I was trying to cook dinner at the time and trying to get it done before it hit. I was born in Michigan, Lived in Houston Texas, and moved here. I Love South Dakota, but holy crap experiencing a Derecho was never on my list to experience. I treated it like a tornado, and just breathed it out because my kiddo is special needs and can pick up when mom or anyone else is on edge. Storms scare me due to living in Tornado Alley most of my life... so this was a doozy when it hit! We didn't get blackout like y'all did in Brookings, but we got this beautiful green color in the sky. scary but yet beautiful! The humming was awesome! I find I do it myself when I'm over whelmed.
If I have learned anything over the years.. Do Not! I repeat... Do not be anywhere near a Walmart or Home Depot in a storm. They are magnet's. BTW... Your humming is relaxing. I do this also. Keeps my head clear.
Until June of 2020, in Colorado, I had never heard of a derecho. We were driving to the vet's office to pick up our cat, when it hit. It didn't get nearly as dark as this one. For us it looked like a normal episode of an El Nino in California, which we were very familiar with. This looks like an f'ing nightmare.
It got so dark because of all of the dirt picked up by the winds. Most of the fields were not planted yet, or hadn't started growing. Most of the land around here is corn or soybean fields, so there was a lot of loose dirt for the wind to pick up.
No need to apologize for the humming. It's soothing compared to how I cope when feeling stress take over. I randomly "yell hum" in short bursts to make myself snap out of it. Never realized it's beneficial neurotically.
First, I am so happy you are ok! Second, I laughed probably more than I should. The music added in when all the alarms were going off sent me! I love your sense of humor! This is my favorite storm video. You handled it like a champ! Again I am so glad you survived! And the humming was great! I sing to myself when nervous. I completely understand. Great job on the video! And God Bless You!
Awww your humming wasn’t annoying at all! It just made me sad you were in such a scary situation! So happy you are okay! And just laughing at your son! If only he knew how serious it was! 😵💫🤯🥺
I was just 1 minute into the video and was thinking man this dude is calm AF with all that's coming. So I stopped the video to check comments Sloan that's makes sense now. Thanks
Your humming added reality to your experience! Kind of like doing a peepy or poo poo dance in the face of death! I road out a Derecho in a 32ft long fifthwheel. It caused a lot of local damage and damage to the hospital. My dog took it better then I did. I've been through a lot of rough weather in this same fifthwheel. From minus 45 to 116 degree temps, Derechos, blizzards, thunder snow, and crazy monsoon storms.
My wife hums when she is nervous ... anything that helps you mentally get through situations like this, just do it. She even hums a similar tune to yours!
Fantastic footage. We had a derecho here in Ontario, Canada back in May,and it hit hard, and fast. Just north of me there was a tornado 🌪. I haven't seen weather that bad in over 40 years. Have a great day 😀.
@KennySuper It came in so quick, that the warning came out 2 minutes before it hit. All I said to my roommate, was it's already here. The sky was almost black with green. I knew then that it was going to get really bad quick. It's beautiful to see, but terrifying to experience it. Have a great day 😀.
yes the Dericho hit Toronto, it hit Ottawa, and went up to Quebec. I don't think we ever had a dericho in Ontario before. It did more damage than the Ice Storm of 1998
@@Thorton5044 I remember a really bad storm 50 years ago in Oshawa, that hit our house. Have a great day 🙂⚘️.
High winds always sounds like a train to me. I’ve been in 2x hurricane wind gusts. One lasted 3 days with an eye of calm in the middle. The 2nd one was overnight.
Welcome to the midwest. Hang around, weather will change. Never know what you will end up with. If you are not from the midwest; yes this is scary but I have seen worse. Glad you are ok but NEVER stay in your car.

I had no idea it was going to get that bad when I chose to sit it out in the car. Same thing happened in November 2022 in Broken Bow with that Idabel Tornado. Lost my radar and like to have crappies when I couldn't tell anymore on the radar where it was until it showed itself. We must be crazy. LOL
So glad to see that, in the worst of this scary situation, you were able to avoid the attacks of the sneaky yellow daleks, as they moved toward you only when you were facing away from them. You dodged in time, confusing them, so that they took out their frustration on the building behind you. 😉🤔🤖🤖🤖😡😵🤕😜😎
What a nightmare!!! I would have been humming n clapping my hands. Anything to keep me grounded n sane. And then the cones moving like Poltergeist? Bless u 🙌
That was intense , it must be quite stressful living in places where these tornados can just spring up and Wipeout suburbs and housing. prayers to all affected , keep safe. Thankyou for sharing.
Not to worry, you were humming in perfect harmony. I went 62 years never hearing that word, derecho until we had one here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in Aug. Of 2020. Now I hear it all the time lol.
Even though I don't live in the south or west I do get it, I live in Michigan and on the west side of the state. We get that type of weather but in winter. We call it the western state snow belt. Snow, ice, and wind pick up from lake Michigan and will turn a beautiful crisp and clear winters day into, a complete 0ft. Visibility nightmare in seconds. What you saw in pitch darkness, but in pitch white, and can drop to -20 degrees. And I'm also a truck driver. So your humming is absolutely crucial to keep calm and level headed. I get it. Glad you came out of that alive. 🙏
We had a storm like this in April in the same area, with snow. It was so bad that I literally could not see the grill guard on the front of my truck, while sitting in the drivers seat.
Humming, no worries. Hey man, whatever you have to do to soothe yourself in the face of imminent danger. On a side note - Kinda sad at how uncaring and nonchalant your son was. I hope he grows to develop some compassion. 😢

The hummin is more soothing than Twisterrettes wirh constant screaming and yelling obvious phrases like tornado on the ground, damage, RFD! Power flash!!!! Youre good brother!
everyones got their own way to try to handle fear/stress, apparently yours is humming. Mine is laughing, in life threatening situations when I get that adrenaline dump I tend to get wired up and laugh at it. That was one wild looking wall of wind coming at you.
Yeah my husband got home from going to Walmart before the power went out. I was in the bathroom crying i was so scared. At the time the sirens went off, I had been working in my attic (worked for a credit card company at the time, from home) and they would only let me leave the headset when sirens started. Barely enough time to get to my lower level. Because of the vents in the attic, side doors blew open and the wind was so strong i thought i was a goner. Most terrifying experience of my life. We normally don't get super bad storms like this. We didn't this year, which I'm thankful for.
This is legitimately the scariest video I have ever seen. I can't begin to comprehend how it got so dark, so fast. Like....end of the world black. The actual weather of nightmares.
Do not apoligize for your humming during a highly dangerous stressful situation that us as viewers can only sit back and watch! I hummed right along with you! Wow You handled it so well, kept calm and tried to visualize what to do next. I would seriously be a blubbering mess on the floor of the car or a deer in the headlights, so scary! Glad you are alright physically, Im sure emotionally take some time to heal Jack.
I had to look this up on the weather program we use for work. 100 mph winds were reported in the area described to his son. That’s a category 2 hurricane!!

Aaaaawe, I'm sorry! Fortunately, Derecho winds are sustained, so safer than tornado. You were safe. Trees? Unfortunately no.
i too have been through one of these storms. we had no warning and couldn’t figure out why the trees were all bent in the same direction. almost touching the ground! lost a lot of beautiful old trees that day. not to mention roofs!!!
Was in a tornado where it took the roof off my home not even 7 ft from where I was huddled. The scariest thing I've been through. Glad you're safe!!
Insane just how dark it became. It went from light to pitch black in a matter of seconds. You sir are very calm. I would be doing way more then just humming.
"where the tits did the Sun go?"
that black car is actually my moms car! and the fertilizer spreader (Cones as you stated) actually didnt hit the car but stopped just before! Only explanation we could think of for why it didnt hit her car was because of the deadzone the car was making as a wind break and the spreader not catching anymore wind in the cone end of it!
Wow......I didn't drive over by it but they slid so fast then abruptly stopped I assumed it had hit the car.
When you start the nervous humming you know it's about to get REAL. It's shocking how it went from day time to practically looking like the dead of night, I would've been humming too, glad ya made it out and shared this vid TY!
Dude! That was literally insane! You've got nerves of steal! And I have lived through it least 7 Hurricanes in Tampa Florida then 3 typhoons over seas in Okinawa back in 1965 to 1968 then then 1969 to 1971! I hope this comment finds you safe and well. You are a brave soul in deed! Much Love&Light many Blissings and successes Namesta 🙏 💜 p.s. I agree land Hurricane 🌀 and they normally produce Tornado 🌪
I was also in Okinawa during those years and those typhoons. Scary stuff.
I used to work in an office for a local charity
and i always could hear a humming noise in the background
i thought it was the hard drive on the computer for several weeks
until i found out it was my co-worker.
I live in Volga I heard you guys had no power for a while can you tell me how long?
I've been in worse storms than this one. Born and raised in Texas and I've seen storms better than that and darker than that one in other words you can put your hand in front of your face and not see it that's how dark it was.
@@jimmykuck7728 Sorry for replying so late but in Brookings we were out of power for around 3-4 days.
The cones are like robots ready to attack! Glad you are safe
That actually looks terrifying to go through!
LOL! I’m glad you addressed the humming early on. I was getting ready to rip into you….until I saw your very plausible explanation of why you do it. Frightening, but nice content, mate! 👍👏
Mercy sakes!! I can't believe just how fast it went pitch black. You're so brave!!
High drama you captured here, Sir. The humming didn't bother me at all, and especially so after I read your explanation for it. I am going to remember that!
I'm from Virginia and I remember Hurricane Isabella in 2003. That's exactly what this storm reminded me of.
I love the humming! I have always done this too when nervous. It helped me digest what I'm seeing ing the video.
My dad was driving home during this, he got home in the middle and ran inside, he was covered in dirt and mud 😰
Edit: my mom said the winds were over 100 mph
i dont live too far from this and had to run home to take shelter i had to cover my head in my shirt and run blind to the door cuz the short amount of time that i had not, dirt and sand had gotten into my eyes it was terrifying
The humming was actually grounding... glad you're okay!
Your humming is actually relaxing after a while. Like a white noise machine.
Thanks
You definitely went through more than a tornado. Thank you for sharing😊
I ❤️❤️❤️ your commentary on this scary, destructive storm!!! Wow 😳 intense!!!!
The humming when nervous is something I do. It’s like playing your own danger music.
I just watched a video about that May storm that came through there. Just wow.
The lightening took a 10 inch bolt out then ran through the cable wire, blew the TV, then went back through the house, and grounded down a pole. I still get nervous when there are storms at night.
I’m a UPS driver and have been in a couple bad storms during work. It’s not fun being in a sailboat made of recycled soda cans in the middle of a supercell
HOLY COW!!! THANK GOD YOUR OK!! THAT IS TERRIFYING 😳😱😳😱 THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS!!! MY GOD!!!
we were probably in the same parking lot, i saw the bus pull up. to everyone wondering. yes i was humming too. scariest moment of my life so far, and i chase every chance i get.
LOL
Dude it got dark, dark. Like night time dark. Wow!
This looks like El reno 100x bigger than its acual size. Glad you survived 😢😊
Bless u 🙌
Me looking for yellow cones..... realizes he means the salt spreader parts upside down...
Man that storm was brutal.. glad your ok...
Being from the south never thought about those being salt spreaders. I was leaning towards fertilizer spreaders.
That was intense , it must be quite stressful living in places where these tornados can just spring up and Wipeout suburbs and housing. prayers to all affected , keep safe. Thankyou for sharing.
Not stressful, its exciting
Not to worry, you were humming in perfect harmony. I went 62 years never hearing that word, derecho until we had one here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in Aug. Of 2020. Now I hear it all the time lol.
One of the creepiest weather videos I've ever seen. I loved it.
I thought I was the only one who hummed the same tune as u when I'm scared. Thanks for the upload. Waiting for ours here in Northern California.
That is the most interesting nervous anxiety humming ever recorded..lmao..I don't blame you, I would singing my azz off.
2:43 "Called my emergency contact, but no one answers so I can tell them where to find my body."
That annotation is just heartbreaking.
I text them and about 3 others. After this my son is hooked on storm chasing himself now. LOL
finally someone else humming. me and my grandma do the same thing for the same reason
Smart for humming... It's self soothing as well.
When you see night from day is really impressive and like a dream
Your humming is not annoying at all. Its a lot better than what I would be doing in that situation, which is hysterically crying.
You are a very brave man to have sat through that storm it must have been one hell of a scary ass thing to go through bless you and bless your family
Not like he had a choice.
@@tbuddy3005 probably would have been safer to go inside a store than to stay in his car.
I think the repeated humming of that tune was a coping mechanism for him. That had to be terrifying.
Sounded like you were humming the beginning of "We're in the money". 👍👍
Mine was always "Bippity-Boppity-Boo".
(40 years as an ER tech, use to drive the RN's nuts) 😷
Your humming actually kept me calm watching the disaster outside
I was born in Brookings SD. Lived there till I was 11. Still have relatives there! Scary! Thanks!
I was always told do what you need to do to get yourself and others to safety, never apologize for doing something to keep yourself calm never know if you might need to be calm to help others, thank you for sharing your video , I learned a lot from it on how tornadoes are derechos are some what different but yet a lot a like
It's crazy how quickly all got pitch dark.
We didn't this year, which I'm thankful for.
homie beatboxin in the storm frfr what a g
Fantastic the great dust bowl is coming back
This is legitimately the scariest video I have ever seen. I can't begin to comprehend how it got so dark, so fast. Like....end of the world black. The actual weather of nightmares.
Dayum! Been thru a F5 Hurricane and it didn't get that black! Wow!!! Incredible!!
Incredible footage and I'm glad you made it out safely ! 🙏 God Bless you and your family 😊
I'm a bit late to this but dont worry about your humming! I hum too when I'm stressed. So glad you made it out okay!
Damn, now you got that tune stuck in my head lol
I literally experienced this yesterday. It was scary. The wind was super powerful and the hail is insane.
This was last month
@@jimmykuck7728 oh, well yeah, but I was saying I experienced a derecho storm yesterday.
Well this is brookings and Volga so
@@jimmykuck7728 I know. I just wanted to say that my town has had an derecho storm on the 7th.

woah I have never seen a nervous tick last for over 15 min straight, this has to be a record
Not a tick.
You don’t have to explain your humming to me because it kept me calm while I was watching this video! Very scary stuff! You are a brave man!
I had to look this up on the weather program we use for work. 100 mph winds were reported in the area described to his son. That’s a category 2 hurricane!!
