Question - did anyone have a plastic air duct that was blocking the area where the alternator is? And if so, how did you remove it? I have a 2005 4.8is and there is a plastic scoop/air duct on the lower front bumper. That scoop extends far enough to block the first 1/3 of the alternator bracket and blocks all access. I have tried to remove it but there is no obvious way to do it. Help!!
it's been a week now i am not done working on this yet, don't know how people still liking BMW ? thank God i was lucky this leaking happened in my garage, what if it happened when am a 100 miles away from home , it's not a slow leaking it's crazy 90% of engine oil was gone in less than 10 minutes🤥😵💫
Do those pins on the bracket adjust how just alternator would be sitting in there?? My alignment is off on bottom alternator pulley. P.S its a new pulley and ive tried adjusting alternator and PS pump a couple times now with no fix
I've gotten reman alternators from Oriellys that had the wrong pulley on them. the pins shouldn't adjust the alignment since all of the bolts along the side of the block create a really static placement. the bolts on the face of the engine and pins are preventing flexing of the bracket fron the belt being driven. if the alternator is correct, the most likely i remember is the lower alternator bolt not being aligned straight through the rear hole and instead skewed to the side where it can threat of the casting of the bolt hole and appear to be tightening.
@@johngrefe2232 That last part has to be my problem . Or i noticed on alternator has some type of adjustment guide pin on the lower slot. Idk what it is
Great video. I got same issue but it's been a week and still not able to remove the last bracket nut out. Not enough space to completely pull it out since the diff is in the way. How did you move the diff to get some clearance? Fyi, I unbolted the 4 diff nuts as well but still not able to move it out the way. Tips pls?
You probably got it by now but mine didn't come apart easily either. The oil pan has an intermediate spline gear inside that seals hard against the oil pan. It took a stupid amount of prying and wiggling at the diff to get it to move the 1 Inch you need to clear the bolt head
This is a great video. If you follow everything that he does, the job should be easy. As far as getting that last bolt out that's behind diff Get you a jack. Place it up under a differential. Do not put a lot of pressure on it. Get a come along and pull it away from Oil pan housing and that will give you enough to room to get the bolt out and it will not drop down. It will rest on the undercarriage
Pretty sure I removed it and replaced it with a cheapo off eBay, I did another video on that, but I try to replace/service things prematurely if I have to move them.

I been dealing with this 4 days now
I am dealing with the same bolt
Thanks for this, I did nearly the same thing.
Awesome, that's really great to hear. These are great SUVs and if you keep them maintained they run for a very long time!
It is the worst bmw engineering joke ive encountered. You are nuts to go under an engine on a shit jack though.
On the e70 it's easier and can be done from the top.
Funnier, the jack stands were recalled for collapsing. Getting a lift at the new shop!

that's crazy if you have been at it for that long. the e70 updated the design and you can do it from the top!
Hey so I got the same engine and my alternator is all covered in oil do you think is coming from this gasket?
Most likely if its engine oil
Ok thank you and for the video

did you remove the driver's side axel?
I did but it's still too hard. Did you also remove the shaft or just leave it. I'll try to pry it again and see what happen. Thx again.

Where's you PS pump. Did you remove it, or just move it out of the way?

I unbolted mine and let it rest on the cross bar up front, no need to open the system this way
