@@Seoulsearch616 yes, this right here. My problem is I get caught up in the hype, the pretty colours. My mom said Lisa it’s the not eyeshadows you want, you want the feeling it gives you when you look at the colours. She nailed it
@@carpet5287 I have tried tons of different products, but keep coming back to Paula's Choice sunscreens - the only ones that don't burn my eyes - and Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation. They're very expensive, so I try to save up and catch holiday sales. I hope you find something that works well for you, too! ❤️
I feel like blonzer is the perfect example of same product, different name. There have always been reddish bronzers and brownish blushes on the market. The only innovation was the name.
YES! That's a great example of what I'm talking about. Coming up with clever names for products that have been around forever and then selling them as something else.
This is so on point to me . I recently bought an old product I used in my 20s and wondered why I ever stopped. It's rubiglo or what used to be called Indian Earth ( I think), and I love it! I was advertised as blush, bronzer, lip, and even eye makeup all in one powder. It's the perfect color for my olive undertone.
Another thing that bugs me to death is that L'Oreal Lumi Lotion was out for many years before the crazy expensive Charlette Tilbery Hollywood flawless lotion came out like it was this super new product and it simply was not!! Another great series Jen!!
Yes!!! This drives me nuts too!! And just people doing it with any products. Like just yesterday I saw a video from Lipstick Lesbians where she was talking about the Haus Labs white foundation being great to help mix the correct shade so you have the right shade all year round when losing your tan. And someone in the comments said how LA Girl had a great dupe for it. I was like, ummm, what?! LA Girl has had their mixers for YEARS, waaaaaay before Haus Labs even existed I think, but definitely way before they came out with their foundation. Similar product that’s more affordable? Yes. Dupe? No because it existed FIRST. If anything, the Haus Labs is technically a dupe for the LA Girl. People just automatically think dupe means cheaper, but it doesn’t. Being cheaper isn’t a requirement. Of course, it’s nice when the similar options are cheaper, but it’s not necessary. They can be the same price, cheaper, or more expensive - it’s about having options. Someone might not want to buy option A because of a certain ingredient it uses, maybe they are cruelty free and the product isn’t, etc. So, they want other options, not necessarily cheaper options. Of course, finding a very similar product for LESS is better. Who wouldn’t want that?! But, just because something is the more affordable option doesn’t mean it’s the dupe. There’s so many products people call dupes that existed well before the more expensive one! 😂😂
I remember the days when if someone was wearing a shade of lip color you could name it, "oh that Black Honey looks great!" Think Orgasm blush or Urbandecay eyeshadow! Back in those days I splurged on my foundation but I only had one at a time, one mascara, 2 small eyeshadow palettes, one blush and a handful of lipgloss and balms. I don't know when I became such an obsessive consumer I do not create beauty content but I own 52 eyeshadow palettes, 11 foundations etc. I am trying a no buy on makeup this year and focus my attention to improving my skin at the dermatologist starting with a laser package and going from there. Thanks Jen for these grounding videos, I know I need a dose of this type of content.
I own 289 palettes and 17 foundations. DOn't feel bad, but it's good that you are critical about it. We are victims of consumerism for many different factors.
It’s an addiction! I have to stop. I can’t possibly use all the foundations I have. I supply all my family and friends with makeup I don’t use. I’ve purchased and tried it once and never use it again. I very seldom return anything. I will be better going forward.
Trends come and go ....that's why I'm doing makeup that makes me happy...companies can call it what they like but the pricing is clearly getting outrageous
What I HATE the most is when they try to shake things up by coming out with a reformulated version as if it’s going to be better somehow, and instead it’s actually a downgrade and something we love is now gone. Or just arbitrarily discontinue a popular product for No Good Reason like Too Faced Peach Perfect foundation. Grrrr! 😅
Or, when a giant company buys a beloved smaller company and then shuts them down - like EL did with Becca and Prescriptives, although they already owned Px.
Exactly this like what m.a.c did with their matte lipsticks they got rid of their og formula and now have this new & improved version that is a crap shoot
I dislike the new "clean" beauty trend. The products go off quickly due to preservatives failing. Incredible wastage, yes, but also risks giving us an infection!
In your FB group I have brought up that we need to slow down and shop our own stashes. One, it allows those products to be used, not stored away in a box that has been shoved into a corner or in our closet. It also saves us money, as well as, time. The Makeup industry has been around for decades, its not going anywhere, anytime soon. Personally, if something is limited edition, well it sux for the company that chose to do that because if its any good, they lost money. All of these discontinued products that were good, could have made their business explode, but not now. Personally, I have slowed down on purchases. In fact, I've kind of steered away from makeup at the stores all together because I'm bored with it. I still wear makeup, but I am more interested in using what I have versus buying more. I put the brakes on. We are putting ourselves in debt because it seems everyday a new products comes out from various brands and what happens is we cant use what we just bought last week or yesterday. I just want to enjoy what I have. As far as watching influencers on youtube, there's plenty of content they can create with products they already own and may not have ever used since they bought it or got it in PR.
Think of all of the plastic...plastic saves lives in the medical industry, it also keeps our food safe in the stores, however I feel that if possible use alternatives...the packaging on makeup components could be streamlined and made better..to get more sustainable packaging means you have to purchase a prestige brand....the drugstore could do better...I haven't had a chance to try out some of the smart pretty brand, I hear it's at Walmart and apparently it's in more sustainable packaging...that could be an idea for a future video...makeup with sustainable packaging
I just went through my massive collection and realized that I had more makeup that I could ever use up before it expires or before I die. I was so depressed I immediately went out and bought a blush palette to cheer me up.
I agree 1000 %. I've been on a buy buy buy for 3 years. I need nothing now. Super sad I've done this so much waisted money. We this is the last year on that train. Makeup is not my business I can't write anything off. Thank you Jen for this talk we all need. 😊
I totally agree. It’s been insanity these last three years for me too. I feel like I have a makeup store in my house!!! No more, we need to go back to the basics! Women looked gorgeous in the previous decades and they didn’t have all these new “products”
I feel like this is not only accurate for make up, what I'm observing is that uniqueness is not wanted anymore. I think we should take our power back and decide what's right for us and not allow others to decide for us. Let's celebrate our uniqueness! ❤🎉
I’ve really cut down on my buying because I only buy colors that will truly look good on me. Once I figured out I look best in cool toned shades, that eliminated half of the makeup out there.
It always makes me chuckle when younger folks discover something "new" & in my head I'm like, yeah, cosmetics are as old as civilization, that (whatever it is) has absolutely been done before!
It's funny, humans have been 'decorating' their face to be attractive since caveman days, mud, tribal tatoos, Egyptian paints and kjole, toxic poisons in the European era of lead paint on faces, green poisons... crazy stuff that's been used as 'beauty' products!!!
I think the blush placement recently ( high on the cheeks and across the nose) is the most innovative trend in the last few years that really makes a difference in how people look. And the good part is that you don't need to buy anything for it.
I'm the same way. I have one freezer bag full of different lip glosses and lip oils. I think I'm one of the few left who still love Lancome Juicy Tubes. 😂😂
Yes! Lip glosses and glossy lipsticks forever! I was so sad during the matte lip years. It was so hard to find lip product that didn’t dry out and look awful on the lips.
Great topic. This is the video that should break the internet. We have been bamboozled by influencers and make-up companies for too long into buying TOO MUCH that languishes in back of drawers. This year I only replace the few 'empties' (products I actualllu used up & want to continue using). I donated countless hardly used pallettes, blushes, bronzes, hiliters and brushes of all types and kept only what I use. Some 'experimentation' becomes necessary when a loved product is discontinued (and again, they do this as a marketing ploy so trying to find a replacement product requires multiple purchases from various companies) ... but otherwise, I have a freeze on buying. At this point I know what colors/formulas work for me and I make minimal adjustments for summer vs winter looks.
I just love all the comments on this video. It's so nice to know that a lot of us are feeling this way, and it's not just me 😅. I'm getting exhausted by all the BS hype and "viral " stuff that encourages us to part with money that is becoming increasingly hard to budget and manage with inflation. Companies are getting frenetic to get in our pockets and I've become increasingly alarmed by it. I'm making a conscious effort to count and recognize daily how many times I'm getting bombarded with advertisements, wherever it comes from and cutting back on those sources of pressure. Ill always watch certain beauty influencers, but I'm very conscious of the ones who push products too hard. Thank you so much for your videos and the community here. ❤️ ❤
That's why I don't have TT. It's full of "influencers" trying to creating you needs to sell you something! And that's also why I skip stories from influencers when they post sponsored content
Pro tip: Install an adblocker on your web browser on your laptop, desktop, notebook, and/or phone. Also use Firefox as your browser and Duck Duck Go, or another non Google search engine, on your devices. Cuts way down on ads.
Thanks Jen. This discussion doesn’t touch on brands that offer the same products with new/special/holiday packaging but that’s another way I’ve seen them try to increase sales.
It's important we realize it's ALL about profit for a publicly traded Co. They MUST show growth to sustain stock prices. We are merely consumers to them.
I do like this when they're Minis. I hate buying lipsticks and some other products in full size because it just takes me so incredibly long to use them. So often I'll only buy new around holidays when they're tiny.
Thank you, Jen for YOUR innovation. You are always dedicated to keeping it real and having the important conversations about the makeup industry that not many other UA-camrs are ready for. You always say the quiet part out loud!
I completely agree. Jen has always been and will remain my number one source for all things makeup and skin related! She is impeccably honest and forthright.❤
I always think of the quote from the movie Mean Girls when people or things copy each. "I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and flip flops, so I bought army pants and flip flops" eventually something and people will copy whatever comes out.
I dumped all my makeup. I went and got a concealer, blusher, lipstick, brow, and mascara. No more foundation. It's either too peach or too pink, so I've dumped foundation for good. I stopped wearing it, and i have had more compliments about my great skin from none at all than with foundation. I'm 54 and i have a few lines. I'm happier with less. I totally agree with you. Makeup saturation. P.s., all that stashed makeup that now also has a time period of when you should use it, I.e , 12m, 24m blah, blah.
Jen, I work for Clarins and they launched their lip oils in 2015. I beleive they were the first when all brands focussed on lipsticks, they innovated with the lip oils - they were in square packaging at that time. They did changed the packaging for the lip oils and lipsticks in recent years but I want to say that all the other brands, including Dior, copied Clarins.
@ martdes I love Clarins lipstick. My go to are Joli Rouge 740 Bright Coral and 26 Hibiscus. In my country, I can't find. Are they discontinued? Are they substituds?
This was my first thought when Jen mentioned lip oils and Dior ... Clarins is known for their excellent lip products (have been meaning to try but never get around to buying one!
I am 57 and I quit trying to be trendy years ago. I do check on whats trendy but only try trendy things if it's something that appeals to me and works with my own personal style.
i feel that we are collecting packaging at this point, not so much the makeup itself. its like getting a new book by the cover or like just going by graphic design per packaging.
Gonna kick it back to the 80s/90s. We didn’t need highlighter… bronzers… eyebrow GEL… contour… lip scrubs? Lip oils? it’s so crazy to me!! I never used makeup brushes… used the little sponge applicators to apply eyeshadow. I like and am willing to try new things but give me Estée Lauder Maybelline and L’Oréal all day long. (Ok I love Natasha too) OMGosh and hair!!! Heat protectant? No. Straightens? We loved volume and curls (simple curling iron I’ve had for oh… 15 years?) ❤❤❤Aquanet forever ❤❤❤
Agree on everything except hair products. Stick straight hair that will not curl . The volume sprays and heat protection has been such a game changer ❤❤
Jen, i really wish brands would watch your channel. I truly believe that your point of view is the same as so many real women. If they watched they definitely would be tapping into the public, who loves makeup and "self care" and who is willing to spend their hard erned money as long as the products are worth it!! Brands would really be dojng themselves a huge favor of they watched creators like yourself- an actual real person, who is honest, smart, kind and LOVES makeup!!
Also, why can’t we find a decent foundation nowadays. These high end brands used to make great foundations 10 years ago in which you did not need a primer, they lasted all day and wouldn’t break down. Even with my oil combo skin. Now we always need primers and setters.
I really appreciate that you aren’t constantly trying to sell us something. No shade to anyone making their living off of sponsorships but it’s so refreshing to not have it when I come here. ❤
I really appreciate this common sense approach to impulse buying. I have been sucked in to marketing in the past and spent way too much for years. Now, I have to be very thoughtful in my purchases because money is very tight. I am rather glad though because I had too much at times. Thanks for this, Jenn! ❤
Everything you said is so true. I came to this sad realization and have barely bought new makeup because it really is all the same thing. Sad because I miss being excited about makeup but my wallet is happy. I just enjoy what I have now and focus more on different looks with what I have than different or “new” products. 😊
This was such a comprehensive and well-articulated analysis of the beauty industry's trends, schemes, and areas of opportunity! It is refreshing to see an influencer address all of the marketing strategies designed to increase profits versus truly serving their customer base. Great job Jen!
Jen, 72 years young here and I love you, your channel, your content and most of all your integrity to your community. I decided after watching one of your “stash” videos, that I will only use products I have until at least Jan., probably longer. I’m quite sure I own enough skin care and makeup to get through all of 2025 (especially including the bins of extra products I just couldn’t be without🤪). I find myself re-discovering products I truly loved, but had cast aside, and enjoying the creativity of using what I have. I will still watch my fav people here, as I continue to learn new ways to put what I have to much better use. Thank you for all you do and staying true to yourself. Much appreciated ❤💄
So true! Fashion and cosmetic marketing shifts are examples of cyclical change. It works because people crave “new” or “refreshed” looks or love a nostalgic vibe. Multi-use products have been around since forever. In the 30s and 40s, women would dab lipstick on their cheeks. In fact, berries were used to color lips and cheeks centuries ago and perhaps the first cosmetic. I wonder if anything new is even possible anymore.
Of course I'd love more videos like this but honestly, I enjoy all of your videos, no matter the topic. They are always well researched and communicated clearly. 👍
Matte liquid lipstick has been around since at least the 90s/early 2000s. I wore CoverGirl Outlast Liquid Lip to my first adult job in 2001 because it really did last all day. It’s been reformulated but it’s still around. Now it lasts 12+ hours instead of 24+ but is not nearly as drying. I still wear it because I also have extremely dry skin (I’m diabetic) and I’m uninterested in having to reapply my lipstick color a million times a day. It’s the only one I’ve found that doesn’t make my lips feel like the Sahara and allows me to use a balm (It comes with a specially formulated one) without ruining my color. I would love a formula that would allow me to keep my lip color while using any moisturizing product on top not just their special one. A girl can dream. 😁
This is what i understand from other darker youtubers, mac dark shades are often very orange and don't work for a lot of dark skin tones, whereas fenty matches their skin tones better. I'm not an expert though!
Mac doesn't offer olive shades sadly and that one is a huge game changer for olive tones because we literally need blue/green added on top of the red/yellow/white pigments that they usually only use for foundations. Without it, we mistakenly will pick warm and that just looks too yellow on us olive toned
Beauty blenders were inovative in the shape and size. It was so nice to get a make up sponge that wasnt a flat round or square sponge that came in compacts and the wedges that came in big packs at the drug store. A lot of us didnt realize we could wash and reuse those sponges and they were so small it took forever to blend. I think it was huge for the make-up community to get a bigger sponge that was marketed to wash and reuse like a brush and not just throw away. We already had sponges, just not as good of sponges until beauty blenders came out. They just took a decent product and made it sooo much better. Now days everything has been done before all you can do is try to take something thats already on the market and make it better which does happen from time to time. Like magnetic lashes. Everything else like blonzer is just giving us the same stuff with a different name.
Actually the marketing of barrier cremes is the solution to a self made problem: a couple years ago skincare trended on social media, everyone started using active ingredients (most) without the proper knowledge and damaged their skin barriers. Another solution would be to simply use less, nothing strong without knowing what you're doing and everything tailored to your exact skin condition - but telling people that is less beneficial... (I saw a guy using a strongly acidic chemical peeling on his face for one hour and he complained that it burned. I know that product: the packaging says "use for no longer than 10 minutes" - so reading the packaging can be strep one)
I definitely agree with this. Especially in the age of social media, EVERYONE is pushing a product. Not even just pushing it but making us feel like “you have to get this” or “you have to run out and buy this!” And FOMO gets a lot of people (I know it’s happened to me). I love watching influencers and their opinion, but one thing that can also be hard at times is when you watch multiple different reviews for the same product. There are thousands of people reviewing these products and we have to remember that not everyone we watch has the same skin type or preferences than us. I think this was a great reminds of overconsumption and how we can try to think smarter when buying beauty products
Excellent video!!! I’m just not very excited anymore. The prices have soared, the sales are minimal and I have plenty of makeup. I think some brands have raised their prices to the point ppl are just saying no. I’m one of them. Also, some folks are really struggling with rent and $6 eggs, $8 loaves of sliced bread. The economy has *tanked and *brands continue to charge more. Brands are pricing themselves out of the market. Thanks Jen!!! Such a fresh topic!!
With the way brands have gone over the last few years, they have stopped making many products for their permanent lines and started making more “trendy” products that just come and go. I want good, solid go-to products that they don’t change and downgrade to make them cheaper. So many products that I used have either been discontinued or reformulated to be garbage and unusable. Why can’t brands spend more time creating good quality products that they can keep around that people can continue to repurchase? I think that’s been my biggest frustration lately in the beauty space.
Yes! Thank you for this timely reminder as we inch toward Christmas! They're throwing everything at us right now and it's tempting because it all looks so pretty, but I keep you in the back of my head when visiting Sephora or Ulta! You've saved me a LOT of money!!❤️❤️❤️
I agree with you that they are throwing everything at us, but I haven't found anything that appeals to me or that I want to spend the money on. I am voting with my feet this Christmas!
I have been watching a lot of makeup videos lately because now in my 50's I am starting to need more makeup and I went barefaced a lot when the kids were little. I just came to the realization as well, that trends don't really work for me, I started doing what I used to do and have gotten more compliments on my complexion. Thanks for sharing!
A few weeks ago I was looking for old ads for Black Honey to see if i could find the version my mom used. In my searching I found this ad for an "all over stick" from the 60s. I thought it was a new thing but as they say there's nothing new under the sun
Fellow fair/cool girl here. _What has happened to foundation shades???_ I never USED to have this much trouble finding a match for my skin undertone, but now it's like pulling teeth trying to find a good match. So many foundations designed for cool/pink undertones seem to pull orange for some reason. And I always prepare my face before applying, so....Anyway, the tried and true brand(s) I've used for decades seem to have gotten rid of so many staple products, I kind of dread looking for new foundations. I'm all for expanding shade ranges, but they REALLY need to work on the _whole spectrum_ of skin tones and undertones, imho.
love this video!! it really feels like brands are trend-chasing for quick money instead of focusing on innovation that could define their brand long-term. i hope some company sees and takes your suggestions!
Make up brush's what a load of bs. Logically $64.00 for a make up brush - the sponge $20.00 anyone that jumps for those things wait I got a bridge to sell you.
Jen, before i started watching videos of makeup on UA-cam (which i did't even know existed ) i had 1 foundation,1blush a mascara and a lipstick. Now i have probably 20 foundations, lots of blush and well you get the idea. So i have to stop because so much is just the same.
CeraVe's example was pretty good. It's a brand that has been there for a long time and it actually works (I use it) but other brands that have appeared later have tried to sell themselves as 'new' when there's nothing new about it. And the difference is that someone on tik tok has tried it and make it go viral so everyone just does the same. These trends are really getting annoying.
You are 100% correct. The prices are obscene & the basics are not being executed well. Why is a nail polish & top coat $26? I'm looking at you Sally Hansen. Why is a eyeshadow duo $60? It's no longer a treat to pick out a new lipstick or eyeshadow, it's an investment.
I don’t fall for it anymore. I only buy things when I run out. And I agree about most foundations being yellow based. So unattractive. I need cool tones too.
I remember tears years years ago, NYX had a cream blush and it was a flop bc no one cared. Now it is all the hype. Benefit launched liquid highlighters when people did not care about highlighters. Now, liquid highlighters everywhere.
Same with fashion trends- its just that make-up manufacturers realized through the power of social media, that they can continuously make money marketing trends.
This was a great video idea. I just love how you and your reviews can't be bought. I really admire your integrity. This videos helps to remind us to not have FOMO. I am bad about wanting to complete collections. That is one I'm working on not being caught up in.
What you’ve described is what I call “The Illusion of Choice.” It also applies to other industries like groceries and airlines. For example, all of the convenience stores within a few blocks sell only Coke products. (“No Coke. Pepsi.” In reverse.)
One of the silliest marketing ploys foundation that’s meant to last is 30 something hours. Nobody should be wearing the same makeup that long. I find the blurring thing so ridiculous too since all blushes are surely blurring!
It’s videos like this that are the reason why I love your channel so much ❤ I also try to be more mindful about my makeup purchases and want to make sure to not get something so much for it being trendy but for it to actually work for me. I also see “new” products that I’m like “yeah haven’t seen that before!” Lol but don’t see anybody else saying that, so thank you for speaking out about that!
It's not just makeup lines that are doing this, it is the same with skin care products. Plus just about every dermatologist on social media has a skin care line. Then again so do local dermatologists in my area. All these products cannot be that different.
So true! They're really not. Like I said when it comes to "barrier creams", they're just moisturizers with ceramides and other common ingredients. But brands have made everyone feel worried about "protecting their barrier" and now a slew of barrier creams are on the market. It's like they create a problem just so they can "solve" it.
Thank you. I agree. I’m wondering how much of it is influenced by TikTok. I’ve never watched TikTok, but it seems this kind of started when TikTok really took off. Plus, it’s just cheaper for brands to copy. Creativity is costly & takes time. It’s all about making the quick, easy cheap money, I think.
I completely agree that it’s important to know what works for you and stick with it and perfect it. You’ll feel better and by mastering the skill you’ll get compliments.
Hi Jen this is an awesome video! Absolute truth all around. Perfect explanation of why I have never followed the trends. Thank you for your incredible content and for all your innovative work!❤👏👏
The good thing about advancing in years is that I don't feel peer pressure anymore. "Oh, you like that? Not for me, good on you." I stick to what suits my taste, face, budget, and who I want to be. I may play and experiment every once in a while, but it's important to pause and ask yourself if you are buying a makeup product because it interests you or because tiktok tells you this is what's cool now.
So true, the more things change, the more they stay the same.....except for your content! This was another original great video Jen. Love the work you put in to your videos. ♥ Elle
Interesting video, Jen. I agree with more innovation on foundation shades-not only on for the deeper skin tones that are definitely needed, but like you I am light skin toned but fall in a bucket that is very often overlooked (olive). I think the marketing is a problem with skin care too. As you get older of course you still want to look youthful, but are any of these eye creams really going to reduce wrinkles, dark circles and/or puffiness? I have been giving questions like that some serious thought lately. Every time there is a new one released that thought pops in “maybe this will be the one that works,” but in reality they seem to all be the same-just good moisturizers 🤷🏻♀️
Yes and the brands play on those emotions and tell you that it's going to solve a problem when it's really going to "do" very little other than moisturize.
I agree 100%!! I went through a phase where I bought so many high end expensive eyeshadow pallettes. Now they are just stacked up collecting dust while I use my Stone Cold Fox pallette every day. Sticking with what I know works for me from now on!
Stone Cold Fox is one of my go-tos, as is Rock Candy. I can use the base mattes and then add in my favorite duochrome and multi-chrome shades for punches of color.
The older I get, the less I care about trends and lean towards basics that I know work for me, even if they cost a little more. 🤓
Same!;
@@Seoulsearch616 yes, this right here. My problem is I get caught up in the hype, the pretty colours. My mom said Lisa it’s the not eyeshadows you want, you want the feeling it gives you when you look at the colours. She nailed it

@gingerchipper yes! It's still in that cute clay pot! It's adorable and has a little puff that comes with it.
@laurakenney100
I remember that! I used to love it! Wore it in my late teens' early 20s. I think you can get it at the Vermont Country Store.
Another thing that bugs me to death is that L'Oreal Lumi Lotion was out for many years before the crazy expensive Charlette Tilbery Hollywood flawless lotion came out like it was this super new product and it simply was not!!
Another great series Jen!!
Exactly!! The CT was a dupe for the L'oreal, haha!
I loved Revlon skinlights also
I didn’t know that! Crazy how the industry works.
100 correct I went to Walmart today and due to a video that Emily Noel did I got two elf blushes for $6 now I am very happy
I think UA-cam has something to do with running out and getting more!!!😉
Precisely. I used to be normal before UA-cam. I'm now addicted.
I will be better going forward.
this is me too! @@CatherinePeterson-pw5dl
Jen is one of the very few content creators who I trust to tell the truth.
💯💯💯
Yes 💯
@972Mockingbird 100% agree
Same, it's just Jen and Robert Welsh I watch now
Yes!! Cream blush is another great example 😂 if you have a bullet lipstick, you have a cream blush in most cases lol
Absolutely! It’s what I use.
Grrrr! 😅
That's the worst!!
The dreaded words: 'New and Improved"!
Or, when a giant company buys a beloved smaller company and then shuts them down - like EL did with Becca and Prescriptives, although they already owned Px.
I'll never forgive Maybelline for changing the formula of their eraser concealer. They ruined it. It used to be perfect for my crepey undereyes
And remember: a handful of parent companies & conglomerates own all the same brands - high-end AND drugstore.
Yes! I have always loved makeup tutorials, and wish influencers would do more of those with products they already own.
Yes, I'm going back on a no buy. Just don't need anymore!
One of the downsides of having more makeup than I need is that it makes no sense to buy more . . . checking out new products was so fun!
When I was a kid in the 80's we called those flat makeup sponges "wedgies"😂
Haha yes!! I remember that!
I still use them for blending shadow!
I still use them!
I remember I used to used those wedgies when I was 18 n young 20s n than I got into the orange 🍊 sponge when I was 23 n it was a game changer lol 😂 ❤
My Mum was using a sponge to blend and apply her foundation in the 80’s and 90’s. And probably before but I wasn’t around then haha
I think it makes you look you have a cold but in a cute way. I enjoy it.
Yes, I love how this looks! I'll be 43 in January and I love doing this with a red blush. I find it looks youthful.
You can pry my lipglosses out of my dried, dead hands. 😂😂 I’ve loved lipgloss for nearly 50 years, I’m never giving them up or get bored with them.
Same here...I don't care what the trends say.
I'm the same way. I have one freezer bag full of different lip glosses and lip oils. I think I'm one of the few left who still love Lancome Juicy Tubes. 😂😂
Me, too! Lip gloss lovers unite! 😂
Yes! Lip glosses and glossy lipsticks forever! I was so sad during the matte lip years. It was so hard to find lip product that didn’t dry out and look awful on the lips.
Lipglosses forever!❤
Thank you for not having lots of ads that interrupt your videos. Much appreciated.
I hate being cool toned/neutral. There's not a lot of great lipstick shades or eyeshades etc for cool toned skin. Everything leans warm. So annoying.
@cs.0903 There's cool toned everywhere but everything is always muted.
So true, I have the same issues. Thanks to Missha for their grey BB cream. 🙏 Korean brands have more options for us.
@@tomjones2157Exactly
Thanks Jen. This discussion doesn’t touch on brands that offer the same products with new/special/holiday packaging but that’s another way I’ve seen them try to increase sales.
That's a great point!!
This is why u and Andrea Matillano are my faves. You guys call it out like it is ❤ oh and Robert Welsh
Love Andrea! Great channel.
Three of my favorites, too!
You couldn’t have been more honest and upfront with this video and you are correct it is all about money and getting the consumer to purchase more.
Agree, consumerism in the US is downright ridiculous! Now that I am retired, I don't need all that stuff, everyone wants YOUR money!!!
You're right, I believe they were the first!
@ martdes I love Clarins lipstick. My go to are Joli Rouge 740 Bright Coral and 26 Hibiscus. In my country, I can't find. Are they discontinued?
Are they substituds?
Yip I bought clarins lip oil years ago and I like it more than Dior.
Lip oils have been around for ages. I remember buying them in the late 90s/early 2000s as a kid.
The over saturation of the market… some product, in the same colors. That’s what makes it so exhausting.
i feel that we are collecting packaging at this point, not so much the makeup itself. its like getting a new book by the cover or like just going by graphic design per packaging.
I’m so old, I actually used the tiny applicators that came with the eyeshadow. 🫢
You gotta check out Casey Dressler, you're gonna love her shorts!! Long live the 80's/90's!
@ truth? I just bought a box of like 100 from Amazon. IMHO still the best way to go!!! 🤪🤪
I'm still using my Clairol hot rollers
Agree on everything except hair products. Stick straight hair that will not curl . The volume sprays and heat protection has been such a game changer ❤❤
This all also happens in fashion. One designers item goes crazy and everyone else jumps on the bandwagon. That’s why this all goes in circles.
That is why I newer buy Pat McGrath products. I see it all at TJMAX and it is always PINK.
Wow! I’ll have to check TJMax. 😂
I've got all my pat McGrath products from there. Super cheap and seems exactly what I swatch at the stores lol
I agree, thy're rather boring, the same as CT whose products are super boring.
My great-grandma used to use her lipstick on her cheeks. I used to roll my eyes when she did that but now I find myself doing the same thing, haha!
You are absolutely correct, I unfortunately jump on a band wagon for some product and regret the purchase as soon as I make it
Of course I'd love more videos like this but honestly, I enjoy all of your videos, no matter the topic.
I know we had it in the 80's
I remember a brand called Ultima that came out with matte lippies in the late '80s
@@katfayegarrett3872I loved my Ultima concealer!
I love this series so much! Thank you for educating us Jen ❤
Can anyone educate me on why Fenty's shade range was "revolutionary " when Mac had been doing an extensive shade range for ions before Fenty? 🤔
I've given up following trends. They often don't work for me anyway - looking at you, matte lip products. Glosses are a dry-lipped girls best friends.
JEN!!!! This is ALL SO TRUE!!! Perfectly said!!! Thank you!!!!❤
I definitely agree with this.
Amen!
@@kate7621😀
Very well said! Fortunately I have a very similar skin tone to Jen so I have used her recommendations with good success
@marthaj67 same! I'm very fair neutral yellow with a bright/clear undertone and can't find anything. It's always orange or dull greige on me.
Great video Jen! I have developed a fragrance allergy. I’d love to see more fragrance free make up and especially hair products!
Thank you Jen! Fellow fair/ light skinned gal here w pink undertones and I have a dilly of a time finding foundations not too yellow! 🥰
love this video!! it really feels like brands are trend-chasing for quick money instead of focusing on innovation that could define their brand long-term. i hope some company sees and takes your suggestions!
I ❤ CeraVe skin care products. They get the job well done. Why pay more?
I do love many of their products, especially cleansers. Sadly, their prices keep creeping up too.
Great video 👍🏼 I agree with the things you mentioned. 💯
Exactlyyyyyy
Make up brush's what a load of bs. Logically $64.00 for a make up brush - the sponge $20.00 anyone that jumps for those things wait I got a bridge to sell you.
Jen, before i started watching videos of makeup on UA-cam (which i did't even know existed ) i had 1 foundation,1blush a mascara and a lipstick. Now i have probably 20 foundations, lots of blush and well you get the idea. So i have to stop because so much is just the same.
I’ve stopped by all high end makeup and sticking with drugstore. I’ve wasted so much money
Because - money. People need to get used to that the corporate America doesn’t care about us. They care about money.
This has been the year of makeup all products are blurring.
YES! So true...it's the new buzzword.
One thing about me is I really try not to follow trends. I wear what makes me feel beautiful.
I remember tears years years ago, NYX had a cream blush and it was a flop bc no one cared. Now it is all the hype. Benefit launched liquid highlighters when people did not care about highlighters. Now, liquid highlighters everywhere.
I'm going into 2025 on a "no-buy." There is nothing new under the sun. And the normalizing of high prices is completely out of hand!
Same with fashion trends- its just that make-up manufacturers realized through the power of social media, that they can continuously make money marketing trends.
Thank you Jen, I appreciate you❤
That eye shadow color is so good on you!
This was a great video idea. I just love how you and your reviews can't be bought. I really admire your integrity. This videos helps to remind us to not have FOMO. I am bad about wanting to complete collections. That is one I'm working on not being caught up in.
I love you and your channel! You do a great job of comparing products so we can make good decisions! I enjoy all your videos
Great video, as always. Thank you so much for all you do.
I also have cool undertones and foundation is not easy to find. Thanks for your truthful video❤❤❤
It's truly mind-boggling that most brands haven't figured it out yet!
Me too. Makes me nuts!
Somebody actually does
It’s videos like this that are the reason why I love your channel so much ❤ I also try to be more mindful about my makeup purchases and want to make sure to not get something so much for it being trendy but for it to actually work for me. I also see “new” products that I’m like “yeah haven’t seen that before!” Lol but don’t see anybody else saying that, so thank you for speaking out about that!
Thank you for being honest and genuine Jen! I think once I realized that there is so much of the same, it really changed my spending habits.
I totally agree!
I wish someone would invent a moisuring lipstick that doesn’t need a lip liner to prevent fathering!
100 agree. there is very little new anything these days. a cream blush/lipstick product is just a cream lipstick.
Yes! I often use these products interchangeably!
I think TikTok is a huge driver of this for sure!
I don't like heavy foundation anymore. I am 64 and the light weight of skin tint foundation is better for me.
I feel the same way!
I agree 100%!! I went through a phase where I bought so many high end expensive eyeshadow pallettes. Now they are just stacked up collecting dust while I use my Stone Cold Fox pallette every day. Sticking with what I know works for me from now on!
That’s how I am with my 11:11 palette.
Stone Cold Fox is one of my go-tos, as is Rock Candy. I can use the base mattes and then add in my favorite duochrome and multi-chrome shades for punches of color.
Great video as always! ❤
I assume this is why brands cater to younger customers because they don't already have a ton of the same products and are willing to buy, buy, buy.
Thank you for being honest.
