BeatTheBush Hi. I am in the market for keyboards. I am deciding between silent reds and browns. I wanted to go with silent reds, but I heard silent reds have some mushy feeling that feel like a membrane rubber dome. Is this true? Do you have any thoughts to provide? Thanks for the video by the way.

So i'm an audio engineer and i ran the recordings of my blue switches through an EQ freq analyzer. what I can tell you is that the keycaps themselves amplify the sound of the switches and therefore, switches will always be louder with keycaps on vs off. In other words, the caps act as mini speaker dome amplifiers. So especially on the blues, the clicks are really loud. This basically means that keys of diff shape and size will produce diff resonance in the keycap and therefore will sound diff. I.e, in the blue switches that i use, there is a spike in the 8.4khz freq for letter keys (smaller keycaps) while the spacebar sounds more hollow and evens out around 2.3khz (less ear piercing). Overall, the volume can be attenuated with o-rings, but if manufacturers really wanted to design a quiet keycap, they should fill the entire inside of the keys with silicon OR some kind of acoustic absorption material. I tried squeezing some putty into my keycaps and it significantly reduced the volume of the clicks (especially the annoying high frequencies) much more than o-rings, but made it heavier, so the keys were a little less snappy. this is definitely something that manufacturers can think about!
Yeah I have a cheap mechanical keyboard and you can tell the annoying sound it makes is not the switches themselves but the thin hollow plastic the keycap are made of. It's so echo-y and produces a high pitch hollow click. Very annoying cheap sound.

Zack Buehler Okay. So your telling me if I wanted to buy a keyboard with cherry switches and have a standard of 101 keys, you would multiply 101 times 10. And I would pay 1,010 dollars for a keyboard? Interesting because I bought a keyboard with cherry MX blues for a little over 100 dollars, it doesn’t add up bud. Also, I just looked up that for 10 switches you’ll pay approximately 10 dollars. Do your research kid.
Thx for the helpful video. Over the years, I've gone through all the phases/permutations of clicky/silent tactile/non-tactile. In an office environment, you have to go silent. Noise does irritate your coworkers and the noise is a subtle inference as to how much/little work you're doing. It's better to be silent and let them guess than to be clicky and let them form opinions (right or wrong). My fave keyboard of all time is the IBM 3278-2 terminal. IBM had a patent on it. It's like the MX-Brown BUT after activation, the key force drops drastically. It's like "falling off a cliff". For a touch typist, it's W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L because you can type faster and more accurately after each key is activated. I have wet dreams of typing on this keyboard (figuratively of course). My current keyboard is the Kinesis Freestyle 2 because it helps w/ my carpal tunnel syndrome. I also switched to the Colemak layout almost 10 years ago. The Kinesis is only ok because of its generic key feel. I have no regrets about Colemak however. I used to type 110 wpm with QWERTY but now type 80 wpm on both layouts after the switch. I don't regret it. My fingers were so tired at the end of the day, but now they're in much better shape.

How's it working for you? I've found a nice looking, yet affordable, blue switch keyboard on Amazon which I'm going to order fairly soon since my current keyboard (membrane) is already starting to fail on me after having it for only around a year.
Its working great! Absolutely no problems and i love the sound and the color on it. (Plus, its fun to annoy people during skype calls with the loud switches)
I use blues for everything. I was in a cubicle at one point. Got my keyboard with MX blues and three weeks later I got the office I was supposed to have. :-) But I do love the clicky. Reminds me of my childhood computer.
I thought the "clicky clicky" was a thing of the past until I stumbled on key switches. Didn't even know that was a thing or that varieties existed. And, much like you, I hear that click and it brings me right back to playing L.O.R.D. on a BBS.
actually, we got like 10 ppl with mx blue switches in they keyboars.. we are like.. in a real small office. It sound cool i think ^^ Its the sound of a it company making money xD
I feel (judging by your English) that you’re probably too young to be working at an office, although I’m just gonna assume you’re not an English speaker.
@BeatTheBush I personally believe that people are too annoyed these days by every... single... little... thing... that... disturbs... their... mind, except of course when it's their own private mobile phone. Clicky keyboards for me is also the sound of production. Even more so an old fashioned typewriter of course, and talking about finger fatigue. Man... from how you talk about fatigue I know you never even touched a mechanical type writer. I can tell you know... it's way beyond 80 grams and they used to due it for 40 hours a week or 8 hours a day in offices back in the day. Now if those co-workers think a clicky keyboard is annoying... I'm sure they are glad to have not lived in their parents or grandparents days. Just hear this, and this is just one: ua-cam.com/video/oxN1C2QQUIE/v-deo.html
Whenever we get a new CPU at work the first thing I do is replace the standard Dell generic keyboards with an MX's for their durability. Keyboards that double-enter or skip over a character are very frustrating and usually find their way to the dumpster by the end of the shift =D
Wow! What a great company to replace them with that. That is costly but likely increases productivity for all the employees. Then again, I think everyone should have 30" monitors as well.
Cherry MX Brown all the way for me. I love the clicky feeling of the keys with the bump, but I hate how loud the blues are, especially when I have a ton of typing to do.
I recently started using blues instead of browns and I'm a bit disappointed. Activating the switch feels fine, but releasing feels horrible. After click, the force while you are releasing drops drastically and the switch become ultra light. Also I think that blues feels worse when you bottom out, it's like hitting a wall.
I use cherry blue for typing and gaming, I use it pretty heavily when I code, and even more when I game, incredibly loud, i have sound blocking pads in my room now lol
Deruzzi I go with the greens because they need extra force to press them. So they kind of act like shock absorbers when I punch the keyboard out of frustration.
foenems grave I use my computer for work, school and gaming. Now imagine all the frustration of driver issues on top of everything else and you wonder why I want to punch my keyboard sometimes?
If your gaming exclusively then get the speed, but if you like feeling when you type I would suggest the brown. I personally own a keyboard with brown switches and would highly recommend them.
Seriously, thank you so much for the video. I spent quite a few hours trying to understand the differences between the switches and your video has been the most helpful one. Cheers!
Thank you for the explanation on the "clicks" and colors. I am not a gamer, but I am a typist and was trying to figure out how to get one with the major clicks. So now I know to get the blue. I will use it for my home office of course. :)
Great explanation. Saves me the trouble. I can imagine using a mixture of these on a keyboard depending on the button and whether you need more deliberate force to activate if accidental usage would be annoying, like the Windows or Escape button. 45g for me, but I'm now torn between tactile or no tactile.
1:20 My god, the satisfaction from hearing that. Also, my favorite key is the blue switch, due to the fact that it has the loudest click, which is the most satisfying thing about using the keyboard; hearing the click and feeling the click as well with your fingers. Soon, however, I might be willing to get a brown switched keyboard that is wireless. I dunno how that one sounds, but at least it'll be wireless.
Got brown copies, as I'm cheap, however this video really did set my mind at ease. I'm very excited, it's really going to be a massive upgrade over my current keyboard, as the keys are so stiff now that I've had to be a bit heavy handed (which is fatiguing my fingers, like you mentioned happens to you). Very well explained, thank you.
Oh my God you're a breath of fresh air no bullshit is hard to find now a days. Clear and concise wording and not overdoing it with big jumbled words to distract us Bravo my friend Keep On Keepin On
I’m kinda new to this cherry switch thing since I never had a mechanical keyboard, but I’m about to buy one, so this video really helped me to understand what’s the difference between the switches. The website I’m about to buy the keyboard indeed offers blue, brown and red switches. I guess, I’m never going to buy the blue ones, they will annoy me. 😂
Blues actually have a pretty shitty, plasticy sound as compared to a lot of non Cherry switches. If you really want a modern switch that feels and sounds good, I'd recommend something like a Unicomp Model M.
I find the browns to be the best in my opinion at least. I think the tactile feel is perfect and after trying the reds, I find that I accidentally press the buttons a lot when I'm resting my fingers on the keyboard during games. On the flip side, the browns give just a slight bit of resistance since they have that tactile bump and that prevents me from pressing them down as I rest my finger on the key. It also lets me know exactly when I'm actuating the key because I can feel the bump and feel when it both engages and releases. It's perfect for mobas in my opinion because of that. It's also light enough to where it doesn't fatigue my fingers at all which I why I haven't even tried the heavier switches yet. I don't think I really need that level of resistance. I would be interested in trying some other switches from different companies though. Their comparable switches to browns my specifically.
BeatTheBush i like the clicky sound , but it's to loud . The red one's are pretty good for gaming , but i need the clicking sound ! xd So , should i take that brown one's ?
I wouldn't think of life that way. This is just a key tester to help you pick your mechanical keyboard. You use this video to pick it, buy your keyboard, and be happy you didn't have to buy a key tester. =D
This is actually a lot more useful than other switch comparison videos omg, like this actually give cues on what's best for what context and how they feel!! thanks (:
Awesome info! Thanks for the content. I think I'll go with cherry mx red or brown, I would need to actually use them to decide but thank you for helping me quickly narrow it down!
This is the third video I've watched while trying to understand what sort of keyboard I want to move to. This is the first one to explain tactile/linear/clicky. Thank you, this was very helpful, and your LED's really explained the activation limits well.
I have a corsair mx strafe rgb keyboard, with cherry mx "silent"switches. It is kinda quiet, but I have never used any other key switches. I would assume that the feeling would be similar to a red
Using the MX Brown. Coming from membrane keyboard, I love it. But I wanted to try something else to change. Blue could be an option but then if it's really low I don't know...
I never used brown but i guess these are similar to membrane but better. Depends for what are you using. I use red for cs go id doesnt feel good because you need to stop suddenly and because key is activate half way trought its hard do control but in other hand is very fast. Maybe red is better for some games where you didnt need sudden stop like bloodhunt, fortnite, warzone. Funny thing is i have better movement with membrane in cs go than red but i noticed faster stop. Can u tell what games tou played with brown and hkw they feel.
since my keyboard using brown switches and never had any keyboard but brown switches, i can say that brown switches are the best just because "i'm already use to it"
This vid only got a bit more popular recently. We'll see how much volume of comments I can handle though. Thanks for your sub. Luckily I type ok fast. =D
i'm going to show this video to my computer guy so he can make me a keyboard that offsets my parkinson's ravaged fingers. touch screen technology + parkie fingers = disaster!!! i also miss the old days when pegging out an ohmmeter was fun. i used to solder with my father when he was inventing things in the garage. thanks for making this video.
BeatTheBush yes i'm admitting my age! i pegged one so badly, it bent the indicator arrow. i'm amazed at how much technology has changed in my lifetime.
A little bit more comparison of the sound of clicking vs non clicking would have been appreciated, but I guess I can find it in another video. Thank you so much for this video, it goes straight to the point and shows exactly what are the differences, without annoying music, visual effects or ads!
i have blue ones and yes, they're loud, but the sound and tactile feedback are superb. Its hard to not notice if you have wrongly pressed a key. Also since i have this keyboard i type much faster. anyways chile so...
i just bought my cherry mx board 6.0 it comes with red switch. i don't know why anyone would say that is bad for typing and non gaming usage because to me, i think it feel so good. you just press the switch, you can feel the smooth pressure going down until you bottom out. linear switch feel like it has a sturdy build quality switches (absolutely it's just my own preference) and heard that linear switches can live longer than tactile switches. i don't know. i just like the red a lot. also, the sound of bottoming out, not too loud, just love to hear the sound of it. anyways, i bottoming out every keys maybe that's why i found no problem with the red.
@@NixXRemade i agree with you, and i have two keyboards, both with red. it's WONDERFUL for gaming, but bad for typing. still totally usable, but every now and then i'll go "wait, did i press that key?" and accidentally press it twice.
Blue is a dream for typing a whole bunch. Browns are nice but blues hit the spot. I do a whole bunch of typing for work and I wouldn't have any other type. You can deaden the clicky sound by using O rings.
I'm returning my reds for browns because I can't tell when I type and these reds are cause me so many typos. I have to press the key all the way down every time to have any confidence that I'm hitting the key.
That was very helpful and the timing is perfect. I want to buy a keyboard, but I didn't know which keys I would be happiest with. You demonstrated the perfect answer. I had no idea there was such a gadget available. Thanks very much. I am ordering one today.

"Then again this is a bit too heavy, but maybe with someone with really **FAT** fingers or heavy hands" My favorite sentence in this entire video. 3:35
XD XD
My favourite was when he said he massaged the key
I love the sound of the blue switches!! Thank you for reassuring that lol
=D Really wanted this video to be as good as if you bought this switch tester. Hope the purpose went though, I had to buy this thing so you didn't have to! =D
It did! I ordered the gamdias hermes rgb p1 keyboard with blue switches
Sup melvin
I use blues for everything. I was in a cubicle at one point. Got my keyboard with MX blues and three weeks later I got the office I was supposed to have. :-)
But I do love the clicky. Reminds me of my childhood computer.
HAHA HAH AHA That is too funny!
Vaughner81 Knowing my luck I would get fired instead...
LOL! Everybody with blue switches and nobody minds. It would see the person that does mind will quit pretty quickly, lol.

Do your computes go ping when you reach the end of a line as well?
Saw this vid when it came out. Just came to rewatch it as it provided good memories, and I've just seen the amount of views. Congrats
Haha, I relied on UA-cam for my Cherry MX, went with the brown series which, yes, is noisy but motivational. Nice job on the lighting !
I think I would also get used to the brown. Who knows, maybe if I had it I might be able to type faster. Too late now. =/
Whenever we get a new CPU at work the first thing I do is replace the
standard Dell generic keyboards with an MX's for their durability.
Keyboards that double-enter or skip over a character are very frustrating and usually find their way to the dumpster by the end of the shift =D
Wow! What a great company to replace them with that. That is costly but likely increases productivity for all the employees. Then again, I think everyone should have 30" monitors as well.
One of our tech's just asked me how to check a battery with a fluke

??? =D
I suppose a tech should know this already lol.
Cherry MX Brown all the way for me. I love the clicky feeling of the keys with the bump, but I hate how loud the blues are, especially when I have a ton of typing to do.

@@blyat2165 im really happy with mine, maybe my headset silent the switches much
I recently started using blues instead of browns and I'm a bit disappointed. Activating the switch feels fine, but releasing feels horrible. After click, the force while you are releasing drops drastically and the switch become ultra light. Also I think that blues feels worse when you bottom out, it's like hitting a wall.
GZonPC it’s pretty much a brown but really loud
I’m trying to find out which switch sounds the best and everyone is just roasting mx blues in the comment section

I personally prefer the Browns. I like the tactile bump feeling, it's nice for typing and gaming as well

I use cherry blue for typing and gaming, I use it pretty heavily when I code, and even more when I game, incredibly loud, i have sound blocking pads in my room now lol
Gateron blues are even louder or so i heard.
I can never buy the blues, my parents will throw that shit away after 1 day

Just buy Razer green then Ur parents gonna sell u ;D

The purpose of this video exactly. =D Glad you found your key. =D
Yes this key is the best because I am not really into loud keys but i like the feeling of activation when I use them
Brown or speed?
If your gaming exclusively then get the speed, but if you like feeling when you type I would suggest the brown. I personally own a keyboard with brown switches and would highly recommend them.
I have Brown also, it's like the old IBM keyboard i had. The keyboard is also extra heavy.
www.duckychannel.com.tw/page-en/ducky-new-zero/

It really will be. I get missed keystrokes sometimes with membrane keys and slows down what you are trying to do.

Thx for posting. This is a very good video. Well narrated, clear and to the point
I've always felt kind of in the dark when it comes to cherry switched but now I know everything! Thanks so much.
Wow I can’t believe I’m seeing my circuit theory class actually put to use 😂

Sameee 😂
I bought blue switch keyboard. Love these clicks 😍
Me too
Blues actually have a pretty shitty, plasticy sound as compared to a lot of non Cherry switches. If you really want a modern switch that feels and sounds good, I'd recommend something like a Unicomp Model M.
@@samrosenthal2111 cherry is overrated bud
i'm up to buy a blue switch one but i'm gonna replace for brown ones, thank you Redragon for making me waste money :/
After i see your post ,I did ordered Keychron K2 Mechanical Keyboard (brown)

your version of explaining the whole thing is the best i’ve ever seen around YT

I like the blue switch sound, but when I had it was to loud for my house. I have grey switch now, but its still is loud
Do a vid on switch sounds please.
Yep, very loud indeed. It's louder when you have multiple keys going as when you are typing.
It didn't come out well in this vid for the sound? All of them are pretty noisy and about the same level but the clicky ones are extra noisy.
I have a corsair mx strafe rgb keyboard, with cherry mx "silent"switches. It is kinda quiet, but I have never used any other key switches. I would assume that the feeling would be similar to a red
i like that sound too
Using the MX Brown.
I’ve been trying to find a video that conveys what the switches would actually feel like, this is the best I’ve seen for that!
since my keyboard using brown switches and never had any keyboard but brown switches, i can say that brown switches are the best just because "i'm already use to it"
I want a tactile bump, so i'd go for brown, but i'm worried that it still might be too loud when I type. Maybe i'll just go for red :/
Brown and red to has almost identical sound levels. So it will not make a difference. Hence you should go for browns.
Vid came out in February, and you are still replying to comments xD This kind of dedication is why I love this channel!
This vid only got a bit more popular recently. We'll see how much volume of comments I can handle though. Thanks for your sub. Luckily I type ok fast. =D
Clears might be a good choice. They're like browns with a larger bump, and they're harder to bottom out.
Not to mention you can get sound dampeners.
i'm going to show this video to my computer guy so he can make me a keyboard that offsets my parkinson's ravaged fingers. touch screen technology + parkie fingers = disaster!!! i also miss the old days when pegging out an ohmmeter was fun. i used to solder with my father when he was inventing things in the garage. thanks for making this video.
Pegging out an ohmmeter? You mean the kind that has a moving mechanical indicator? LOL!
BeatTheBush yes i'm admitting my age! i pegged one so badly, it bent the indicator arrow. i'm amazed at how much technology has changed in my lifetime.
How old are you?
Been trying to understand linear and tactile for a bit and most reviewers just assume everyone already know what they are. Thank you!
all i can hear is my friends mx blues when we play. even when his mic is muted
i was playing left 4 dead 2 with my friends and i can still hear the blue switch clicks over all the screaming

"as you increase the force you are going to press it more and more" lol
A little bit more comparison of the sound of clicking vs non clicking would have been appreciated, but I guess I can find it in another video. Thank you so much for this video, it goes straight to the point and shows exactly what are the differences, without annoying music, visual effects or ads!
i have blue ones and yes, they're loud, but the sound and tactile feedback are superb. Its hard to not notice if you have wrongly pressed a key. Also since i have this keyboard i type much faster. anyways chile so...
I use cherry mx blues and I love them!!!
I think I might want to try the browns myself in stead of the reds I currently have.
nice ive been thinking of getting a new keyboard, will probably get the red.
Yay team red! =D Actually, I was afraid I would like a different switch after getting the sampler. Luckily that didn't happen, lol.
i just bought my cherry mx board 6.0 it comes with red switch. i don't know why anyone would say that is bad for typing and non gaming usage because to me, i think it feel so good. you just press the switch, you can feel the smooth pressure going down until you bottom out. linear switch feel like it has a sturdy build quality switches (absolutely it's just my own preference) and heard that linear switches can live longer than tactile switches. i don't know. i just like the red a lot. also, the sound of bottoming out, not too loud, just love to hear the sound of it. anyways, i bottoming out every keys maybe that's why i found no problem with the red.
I personally think reds are garbage and makes your typing really inconsistent, but I hope you got used to them by now
@@NixXRemade i agree with you, and i have two keyboards, both with red. it's WONDERFUL for gaming, but bad for typing. still totally usable, but every now and then i'll go "wait, did i press that key?" and accidentally press it twice.

Wow, you noticed. =D
Blue is a dream for typing a whole bunch. Browns are nice but blues hit the spot. I do a whole bunch of typing for work and I wouldn't have any other type. You can deaden the clicky sound by using O rings.
Hummmm... you'll have to ask people around you to see if having such a loud keyboard is okay. Even the reds are super loud to me.
You may want to try Chiclet keys if you're annoyed by the MX swtiches :D
phuturephunk o rings on blues do nothing
i went with roccat brown switches. ive only ever used blue switches before and man these are a dream. clicky but not stupid loud.
