Yeah our way up north will be against the current as well. I will long back for these easy miles haha. That sounds like a cool trip you have coming up! Is your boat currently in Europe?
Bernard Moittesier was THE legend. The old sailors had no starlink or any kind of satnav. They were completely cut out from the outside world pretty much. We have it so much easier today with all the technology we are surrounded on our boats. Even with just a little tablet with Navionics installed it is a whole new game for us sailors.
Definitely a Legend indeed. It is really fun to read the differences in experience between Robin knox Johnston, constantly fighting to keep his boat together, and Bernard just seeming to live and breathe the ocean and not having that many problems with his boat. We do have it a lot easier yes, which also has made the cruising lifestyle a lot more attainable for most people!
Hi Hugo, you are almost there! Less than 1.000 miles!!! Now you have covered so much, what is your opinion in terms of complexity of saling compared to Mediterranean sailing? I always sail in the Med and I'm interested in knowing about the differences as I plan to do an Atlantic crossing in a couple of years. Fair winds!!
Thank you! Yes progress has been good. I have sailed the med from Gibraltar all the way to Athens and back for about 1.5 year so I have quite some experience there. I would say Atlantic sailing is way easier. Predictions are steady, if you go in the right season it is very unlikely to encounter storms, you can use the tradewinds, waves are less choppy etc. So if you have good experience in Mediteranean sailing, doing some longer crossings there as well, not just daysails. You will be more than fine on the Atlantic in the right season ;)
The biggest difference is that in the med you are always maximum 1 day away from a port. In the Atlantic you are on your own. So need to make sure the boat is in perfect condition and be able to fix stuff yourself.
Sounds like you don't need to be envious as you are already on your way of attaining the goal. Patience and work towards the goal and you will get there!
When I sailed from Argentina to the US I fought the current until fortalezza. Next winter I am sailing from Spain to Florida.

@Boatlifeisbest Bernard was an amazing personality! I have all his books. Sail safe out there
What a beautiful day that was...
It sure was, not too many wants on the ocean. Some wind, not too many waves and a fresh fish.
@Boatlifeisbest 💯
