Great pro tips here. Another pro tip I got during this process is if you're doing multiple doors, I advise taking one hinge at a time off each door, paint it and place it back. Might take a bit longer, but hanging doors is a pain.
What I did when painting kitchen cupboard hinges that were yellowed, I took the screws and stuck them into the paper lid of an egg carton, then I could hold the carton lid and spray the tops of all the screws white. The hinges were the kind where hinges and screws are visible. Worked amazing! Used Rustoleum with primer also.
Great video. I borrowed a tip from a kitchen reno and boiled old cabinet hinges with baking soda. It cleaned them right up. I may try the same on my door hinges. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I’m about to do this in my new house. Two questions: How are they holding up 3+ years later? Is there a specific reason for using heat as opposed to a paint stripper for removing the old paint?
@@LBizKid04 I'm sure you've probably already done this, but if you were really worried about screws stripping you could use a drill on a lower setting or a screwdriver even. Tbh, an impact is a bit overkill here. The bigger issue from taking the screws out, is that you may strip out the door casing and have to use either longer screws and or put adhesive and toothpicks back into the hole so that the screws have something to hold onto.
I made my own baby gates and spray painted the hinges(think one piece cabinet hinge) with the same paint brand/formulation as you but in black. They still look great after 18 months, but a fine dust did collect and stain the white baseboards underneath. I suspect this was from paint being on the pin and touching surfaces of the barrels. I’m curious if you saw similar ware after a few weeks? Nice editing work on the video btw
Man! I would give my eye teeth to find the cheap brass plated steel latch cover plates-on their own! Not the strike plates, the cover that goes around the latch. I can't seem to find a source.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs What would you recommend as a top coat for interior door hinges, oil based polyurethane? Any brand preference? I'm doing all of the kitchen & bath cabinet hardware but not familiar with rattle can finishes. ps I'm a new sub! I need some guidance for everyday repairs and based on the title of your channel it appears to be a perfect fit : )
PRO TIP! If you do not have a heat gun, boil your hinges. My paint came off sooooo easy with a scrubber.

That masking tape trick is great and a major time saver as well. Thank you!
That’s such a great idea to use masking tape to hold the screws and pins together and keep them clean while painting!
Yeah, it worked great especially for the hinge pins. Best of luck on your project!

Nice, I saw some people proposing that method as well. Glad to hear it worked for you and thanks for the feedback!
Im a small woman and i have a very heavy metal door so i took one hinge off at a time. 😅 got it done.

pop all the screws and pin though cardboard then paint tops much faster then tape
Yep, I used a paper egg carton lid. Worked amazing!
I'm looking to tackle this same task (with the same exact colors actually). This video was helpful - thank you!!
great, best of luck on the project!
@@EverydayHomeRepairs how worried do you have to be about taking the screws out and back in? Couldn't they easily strip?

@@cameronforbes2649 not yet 🤣 this project got pushed. I appreciate your comments, thanks!
Thank you, your instructions were easy to follow 🙂.
You’re welcome
Exact video I was looking for! Where can I find the video on door knobs as well? Thanks!
How are these holding up. Anything you’d do differently? I’m thinking about doing mine

How has the paint held up on the hinges? Is there sign of wear or chipping?
Excellent video. Well explained. Well shot. Encouraging.

Very nicely done, great video👍
If you have a bench grinder with a wire wheel it will make short work of cleaning those hinges.
How do you prevent a door cabinet hinge that has been sprayed and when the door is opened it keeps scraping the spray off ?
Boil hinges in water with 1/2 cup baking soda. Old paint will fall off.
How long did it take you to prep and paint (actual time you're spending doing something, not dry time?)?
This is a bit of a guess but probably 4 total hours.
A week for diy, for someone doing this everyday for living? Shouldn’t take couple hours
How much will I save by not replacing the hinges directly?
Great refinish job. What size phillip screw head did you use?
Most hinge screws are #9.
thank this is exactly what im looking to do
Great, best of luck on your project!
Great video. Thanks for posting!
Should I use a gloss or matte?
Thank u for this video!
Hi, does the spray paint last for years to come?
The video is a year old (half a year at the time of your question). Check back in a couple of years.
Thank you 😊
Nice job.
What of color did you use.
Did you use a top coat?
I did not, but might not be a bad idea to give a little more durability.

ur scratching the hinges with that wire brush
Isn’t that a good thing to help the paint adhere to the surface?
